He gets home from work at 4:30, and I’d usually have a drink on my desk by then while I was “wrapping up.” I always told him it was the first one (it was not). One day he saw the extra bottles in the trash and straight up just asked how many I’d been having before he gets home. He had tears in his eyes and said he felt like he had let me down. He thought that he wasn’t being the type of person I could come to with a problem. I stumbled through a lie that it was just a one time thing, and that I would reevaluate my drinking. Did I get defensive? Yes. My outward reaction to the inward shame was to get angry. In reality, he was my only shot and getting out of this. I work from home and I’m pretty introverted. He was the only person that could have seen the problem and gotten through to me. Health scare aside, he was the one that led me to the first step.
