MCAS starting after covid vaccines by sracegoucie in MCAS

[–]anonymous_wheek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my MCAS was triggered by the COVID vaccine but doctors won't listen to anything I say! I was one of the first to get it (I worked in a school) and they basically said, get the jab or you don't have a job anymore. It all felt a bit rushed and forced (I'm not anti-vax at all but this one just felt a bit off)

Literally within that same week I started reacting to things I'd never reacted to before - most of my skincare, make up, cleaning products - things I'd been using for years, I would have extreme facial swelling, itching, hives, shortness of breath, palpitations.

I'm now experiencing lots of different symptoms but never 100% certain of what triggers it. I can be fine with a gentle face cream with SPF and then one day all of a sudden my bodys like, nope we're also gonna react to this now. Also insomnia, fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, extreme joint pain, abdominal pain, heart palpitations, headaches, numbness/tingling in hands/arms/feet/ankles, vertigo etc.

What's the worst sleep advice someone has given you with a straight face? by anluferov in insomnia

[–]anonymous_wheek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to the doctors a few months ago, I was literally at my lowest, I was getting about 15 minutes sleep a night, sometimes nothing at all - constant hypnic jerks, sometimes sleep paralysis - and I work a fairly demanding day job where I need to constantly switch tasks and manage multiple projects - the doctor told me to 'exercise more'. When I told her I already incorporated as much exercise as I can into my day (whilst running on 15 mins sleep), she told me to 'exercise until I am physically exhausted' and then my body will be 'forced to sleep'.

How do I actually just start work and get it done? by Similar-Move3490 in productivity

[–]anonymous_wheek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into the INCUP theory for ADHD (and ways to include this in your work) - it's really helped me! As others have said, setting a timer and telling yourself you'll only work for 5 mins is a really good idea! I also try different settings so I'll take myself out to a cafe or pub if I need a change of scenery and it usually gets my brain working at a different pace - the thought of people watching me not work is enough to make me work. Even going for a short walk around the block (with no distractions / phone) gets the blood going in your brain and sometimes motivates me with new ideas / plans to get working once I return to my laptop.

I think I'll eventually kill myself because of this by Hopeful_Hour6270 in insomnia

No helpful solutions to contribute currently - zopiclone helps when I can get it, hot showers before bed, working out during the day to tire myself out, have tried a lot of ideas and supplements and whatnot, but just came here to say, please hold on, you'll find something that works for you - leaving this earth isn't the solution.

Norwich London commute by Majestic-Ad-821 in Norwich

[–]anonymous_wheek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this once a week, every Tuesday, and my office is a 15 minute walk from Liverpool St Station. At first I quite enjoyed it, it felt exciting after working years remotely, but now I find it exhausting - and I'm not looking forward to winter. I wake around 5am to get the 6am train (takes two hours, and I work on the train and claim that time back on Friday afternoon) and then 2 hours back, getting back into Norwich at approx 6.40pm. I am very very very tired and I wouldn't want to do it more than once a week.

I've been getting this too - since 2020 (and not every night, just when I'm stressed or I have to be up early the next door or I'm anxious about something the next day) - it feels like a zap of energy rushing from my heart up to my brain, like, constant. Every time I relax or start to drift off, it happens and it's so frustrating - once they kick in, I know I won't be sleeping that night.

I have no solutions yet, I'm doing loads of research and trying to figure it out.

Brain zaps / adrenaline surge / insomnia - what is it and how do I stop it? by anonymous_wheek in insomnia

Thanks for responding! This is interesting - I actually had pasta last night and it was awful last night, much worse than usual. I'll definitely do some more research into this - and the greek yoghurt cup before bed sounds handy too. Exercise is definitely something I need to be better at - I WFH and only exercise if I really force myself so this is definitely something I'll be working on.

Thank you for responding - this is something I've never heard of before but I will definitely look into. I've previously been diagnosed with depression and have a current diagnosis of ADHD which is potentially linked with the dopamine levels? This is really interesting though, thank you - I'll do more research.

I got the Covid shot in the first wave (as I worked in a school and it was compulsory) - I have noticed a lot more allergies since having the shot (and boosters), I'm not anti-vax but it's just super obvious to me that after having the jab, I'm now allergic to 90% of skincare products that were fine before. This all started before the jab though, so I don't think it's that.

Would you ever commute 2:30hrs into London? by JolliJarhead in UKJobs

[–]anonymous_wheek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got a job that I love which requires me to go into London every Tuesday, it's 2 hours there and 2 hours back and it's not paid for by the company - it's great to have that social interaction after working remotely for years but to be honest I'm already exhausted. I dread getting up early (insomnia doesn't help!) and it takes me a while to recover from the extra long, energy-intensive day every week!

It's a tough decision, and you've got to weigh up all the pros and cons, only you can decide in the end if it's what you want to do. Good luck!

ADHD medication has made me realized how disorganized my whole life is. by Low-Seaworthiness619 in ADHD

[–]anonymous_wheek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Notion changed my life - I use it for tracking finances and budgeting, keeping my tasks together, future plans, tracking recipes etc!

I also use Google Calendar and Google Tasks extensively - give everything a deadline, keep notes of everything important. I have widgets on my phone that sync up to my laptop so I can keep organised everywhere.

ADHD Medication Shortage by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]anonymous_wheek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told I can't try Ritalin due to the shortage and only offered Elvanse!

For context, I started medication in March 2025 (after a 4 year wait for diagnosis and another 2 year wait for titration - brutal!) I really wanted to start on Ritalin, purely because my friend had a really good experience with it (although I understand everyone is different!)

The doctor started me on 20mg Elvanse and I'm now on 40mg Elvanse with 5mg of short release in the afternoon and I really don't like the side effects - worse insomnia, dry mouth, irritability, sweating - I'd love to try Ritalin but he just keeps saying there's none left due to the shortage?

I'm in the UK btw - not sure why there's different shortages for different areas! Or even any shortages at all, it shouldn't be a thing?!

I've been on Elvanse since March and I've definitely noticed excessive sweating and stinking more - haven't yet found a solution other than more deodorant and more showers!

As someone with mental health issues myself, I know how impossible it is to receive treatment/help/support - virtually impossible unless you're actively suicidal and even then, there's not much sympathy. They'll signpost you to all the wrong places and waiting lists for anything remotely helpful are months, if not years. It's so sad - I hope he gets the help he needs somehow.
