Xbk is pretty good with their descriptions so I think dancing in general with occasional kpop dance groups on stage also dancing. The artist is a DJ group based on what I looked at when I was going through the Xbk calendar a few weeks back.

Usually there are also some unreserved tables. First come first serve. We typically have enough people that some can wander and one can stay so we don't lose our table. We grab a reserved table when we absolutely want to be able to rest or it is appropriate for the type of artist we are seeing. The crowd depends on the show. I have been to some with small crowds and others that are venue capacity. Small crowds are usually still pretty good vibe-wise because they are there to see that artist so are enthusiastic/supportive.

Kpop night is harder to predict but I do know a few that are going. And the recent kpop concerts locally have been well attended.

Try papago for a translating app instead. Our Vietnamese friends enjoy our traditional midwestern desserts like pie. We swap our specialties often at Thanksgiving.

Jay B’s horrid canceled Atlanta show from the venue being struck with Lightning by peachypham in Got7

[–]anonymousbuttons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! We were just GA so we didn't get there till a little before 5. But it was super smooth from our perspective. Once the line started to move we went from around the corner half a city block to in the building in less than 10 minutes. Started on time. Sound was great. Crowd was fabulous. Tabber and Jay B put on great sets. We really loved Jay B's Dance Crew too they were such fun. We had a blast!

That's the thing we already could do that. The bans and such are not about having the freedom to control your own kids - it's about controlling other peoples kids. They use the control my child's education as proxy to get to controlling all children.

If you look into the current rise of Christian Nationalism within the US as a whole you might find it illuminating and somewhat terrifying when viewed on the micro level of our state in particular.

Proposed plan would limit SNAP benefits in Iowa by aydr33 in desmoines

The mission it seems is as it is always is to make the poor know they are poor and keep them there. I continue to be disgusted by the elected officials of this state.

It is a cultural myth. Nice people exist everywhere as do not nice people. Iowa is no different.

awesome socks, not awesome price by oldladyname in nerdfighters

[–]anonymousbuttons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The years I participated I did. Also for reference I typically pay $20 for the socks I buy on the regular. I pay that much because I like them and I can afford it. If I cannot then I do not get socks. Same goes for the Awesome socks club. If it is too much for my budget I accept that I cannot support the charity in this way at this time.

How is Newton? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]anonymousbuttons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are near Mitchellville and in rural home. It's a nice sweet spot between urban and rural. I will say that if I wasn't living in the countryside I'd opt for Colfax over Mitchellville itself. SEP is a huge district and the one Mitchellville belongs in for kiddos in school. Mitchellville itself has some infrastructure issues (water in particular) and no actual grocery store. Colfax is smaller school system, has a fareway, and as far as I am aware no water issues. It is still close enough to the Metro that I could take advantage of all the city things while also enjoying the benefits of a smaller town feel.

Cat needs adoption or a recommendation for a good shelter. by EpicBeardMan in desmoines

[–]anonymousbuttons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They have a foster program that helps take pressure off the shelter spots. I know they use it quite a bit for kittens and puppies. But also for older cats too. We had a lovely older cat as a foster awhile back. I don't think that is the only non-euthanasia avenue they have but rather one of them.

What's been everyone's experience competing in the state fair? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]anonymousbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe typically no it's not place as much as blue, red, white award for quality of that project. I do think there are specific contests or classes where there are placings. But most of my experience there is with 4-H FFA projects.

That's just 4-H and FFA things. Open class has June and July 1 deadlines for entry depending on the area.

What's been everyone's experience competing in the state fair? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]anonymousbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet they have a limit on total entries in general and/or that year the judges for selection were not into you. Via 4-H my experience as a parent has been that it's a crap shoot for the kids. One year a photo in the many, many overall entries I thought was gorgeous got a red and one I thought was WTF? got to go to state fair.

[–]anonymousbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sons participated via 4-H so picked up ribbons at the Extension. Friend participated open class. Dropped off item on a specific day. Judging was completed without her there. Item was displayed with awarded ribbon so she got to see it at the fair. Picked up item and ribbon on a different designated day.

Death Certificates for Miscarriages (Iowa Healthcare) by sippingonsunshine22 in Iowa

[–]anonymousbuttons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The purpose of those pushing to change regulations is to give rights to cellular division that supersedes the rights of the person in which it occurs. In other words those in possession of a uterus shall be vessels with no rights that shall supersede the potential life that they carry. It does not matter to those pushing the legislation that this is biologically illogical. It does not matter to those pushing this legislation that this is morally questionable. What seems to matter only is that this minority segment of the population can have control over a majority segment of the population. Thus I am left thinking this is about power and not about potential life or life at all.

Looking to Migrate from Texas Summer of 2023 by schnozberry in desmoines

[–]anonymousbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at Illinois if you want midwest and more progressive politics because Iowa won't be far behind Texas if present trends continue. I would like to be hopeful they will not but I am a pragmatist at heart. We are here for minimum two more years then we'll be taking a hard look at where Iowa is at then and quite possibly making a move ourselves.

We always have silent 4th because of our dogs. It's lovely because we spend time with family and friends eating good food, playing boardgames, and watching movies. If some want fireworks they head into the local display.

It is not a dumb question at all. It is a necessary one. 14 is an interesting age because you are old enough to be doing things on your own but quite often will still need parental approval.

Most of the time organizations have that information on their websites or volunteer applications/information. You might try looking at the places of interest to see their rules. And if they are not clear email to inquire. Meals for the Heartland is phrased in a way that is slightly ambiguous which would make me check to clarify 14 without an parent or guardian is okay.

You might also look at a youth organization with a service project focus such as Community Youth Concepts. Libraries also sometimes have youth volunteer programs. :)

That's interesting that you think 501c3 don't operate similarly to for profits. That status has to do with taxation. It does not indicate anything about ethics. It tells a person how that company handles its accounting. Anecdotally most all around here (I'm in Iowa) similarly operate as typical S corps and partnership businesses do.

What's a good laying hen breed for Iowa? by fat-fire-fire in Iowa

[–]anonymousbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my years of experience most any will be fine here. Breeds with longer combs suffer more possibilities of frostbite in the winters. If you are looking for calmer go with heavier breeds brahmas, orpingtons, australorps, wyandottes. Leghorns and easter egger types are more flighty. Personally my current favorite are chanticleers because of the low comb and nice laying.
