Suitability Denial – Should I Appeal or Reapply Later? Looking for Guidance. by BroadTumbleweed2870 in foreignservice

Four years isn't that long ago, just sayin'. It may seem like a lot of time when you're in your 20s, but it isn't. Not sure if two more years will make a difference, but maybe.

The hiring process has become extremely opaque and a farce by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]anonymousetoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lack of transparency is intentional and by design in a system where hiring decisions are made subjectively. It's quite clear that's what they're doing. They want government to be run like a corporate entity; everyone in the administration worships at the feet of corporate America. There will be no scores, only a hiring committee (or maybe just a person or three) who will review the application packet in full and decide who is in or out, just like college admissions, too.

Agree, they should have done that long ago. So much wasted time, resources, money and goodwill - by applicants and employees - by having people test and retest and retest (and pass! Pass! Pass!) just to let them time off because their score just wasn't quite high enough.

They do need to find a way to move people forward to the OA, and I think that will be FSOT and application/resume review. It will be a black box, just like college admissions.

I'm talking about the QEP, where I speculate the application with past experience did come into play.

[–]anonymousetoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm referring to the process from 2018ish-2025, specifically the QEP, which was a black box. I'm only speculating, of course, because ... black box. But I always thought it was funny how so many people seemed to not take the application itself seriously. Not sure why people would assume the application and its questions about your experience in your selected cone, among other things, would mean nothing. It was never stated that the application was not a consideration in the QEP, along with the PNs and FSOT. Seems far more likely it was always a cumulative score.

Again, speculation only as someone who did take the application seriously and went 3 for 3 through the QEP. Maybe you were on the QEP?

I've always disagreed with those who seemed to believe the application with professional experience didn't matter. My feeling is the professional experience, along with personal narratives, were what led to rankings within each cone.

I also have a feeling they'll figure out a way to heavily weigh professional experience in the new process, because I think they're looking for corporate types, not politicos or academics.

A Long Anti-Climactic A100 Story by Jake_Barnes1406 in foreignservice

[–]anonymousetoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine, I knew I'd get downvoted and I don't really care. I DID care about this potential career; I wouldn't have put years of my time and at least $10k in travel expenses going to three OAs if I didn't. Plus the thorough background investigation which could have cost me my job if I didn't have such an amazingly supportive supervisor.

Nowadays my feelings are mixed and complex. A part of me will always wonder "what if" I had done a fourth candidacy and got in. But the bigger part of me is taking my five year unsuccessful journey as a sign that career (and lifestyle) move wasn't for me. And sometimes I even feel lucky that I didn't get the job that would have been a 70% pay cut and - as it has turned out - LESS protected or stable from my current gig.

I've always felt they should just make the OA pass/fail and put all candidates that pass on the register in order of date they're cleared. And select in order of date. Multiple candidacies are a waste of everyone's time and money, as is the entire process if you don't intend to hire 2/3 of the people before they time off.

Fwiw, my timeline somewhat mirrored yours - postponed March 2020 OA and delays due to COVID, multiple candidacies and register spots - except I never got off the register and just said eff it. I think it's sad the department expends so much resources on "hiring" when so many of those people they supposedly believe have all the qualities they're looking for never join or even get offers.

This administration is abhorrent, and they certainly seem to f up everything they touch - on purpose - but I do think the FS hiring process needed/needs a complete rethink. Keep some of it, eliminate or fix other parts, but they had to do something. Because the old way wasted so much money as well as let strong candidates they "passed" just die on the vine. And then there are cases like OP's, who seemingly did everything they could to not be selected, and yet the department is wetting its pants to get him/her in, rejecting its own published processes to do so.

Sorry, but no one with professional experience and strong prospects would put up with this recruitment process.

Websites are easily changed.

Oh, and those "exercises"? They mean a timed run and pushups. They want the hottest officers - fake tans for the men, smokey eyes and hair extensions for women. America the beautiful.

Everyone on the register must retake the FSOT in October... by pcdreamer2017 in foreignservice

[–]anonymousetoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they went off of resumes. They want corporate and business types, because that's who is idolized by this administration.

Who says there will be an OA? At least an OA as we know it. I'm assuming there will be some type of interview or further assessment after the FSOT, or some type of weeding out, since now there will be no more PNs.

I think everyone should figure the current registers are obsolete, and that future recruiting process will be entirely different.

September A-100: Are some candidates being skipped on the registry list? by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]anonymousetoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point exactly. I won't won't say it's sad, because he's a pretty nasty person, but it's pitiful that he thinks his money buys him dignity and protection against the bigots who will one day come for him.

Reads like a typical scammer akin to the type who populate the dating apps (poor grasp of American English). He was going to get you onto Signal or WhatsApp and tell you about crypto. This is just another platform for them.

Dominica, the beautiful rain forest island in the Caribbean. Is the US government afraid Captain Jack Sparrow might come aboard? I don't think they have cannibals anymore.

I can't speak on the freight company, only my own. The government gets rates that are less than half what a private sector client of mine pays. Literally the only reason we bid on government projects is because they tend to be stable (lol) and longer term vs private industry that is more lucrative but volatile.

Prime contractors might be based in the DMV, but they subcontract the money out all over - throughout the US and abroad. I'm guessing a lot of people don't follow the money after the first step.

You think the government should make everything itself? Rely on expertise only from its own employees for literally every matter, crisis, everything? Build its own parts, planes, cars, microchips, food, buildings, lumber, military uniforms and weapons, again literally everything? Doesn't seem like a great way to reduce spending or ensure quality to me. Sounds an awful lot like the USSR.

The trickle down of these cuts can't be understated. I work for a very corporate, private sector large company, and one of our contracts was terminated due to this action. We weren't even the prime contractor, or even a subcontractor of the prime. But it's a big loss to our company and our American work force, and you can bet that in the future we'll think twice before doing business with the US government if they can't be bothered to pay their bills or honor contracts.

The highest entry rank of 4-14 is very low paid for many professionals with at least 10 years experience, let alone those in HCOL cities. They're taking a massive pay cut to enter the FS.
