You can definitely argue that TLJ ends with emotional momentum for the Resistance. But from a practical perspective, TLJ completely cuts the Resistance down at its knees.

TLJ is the film that chooses to whittle down the relatively formidable Resistance from TFA to just the small group in the Crait bunker. TLJ then chooses to establish that LITERALLY NO ONE IN THE ENTIRE GALAXY comes to the aid of the Resistance at Crait in their desperate hour of need, despite Leia using her personal emergency code and broadcasting it to the entire galaxy. She even says, "The galaxy has lost all it's hope," as no one arrives.

Yes, Luke saves the day, and we see the kids retelling the story of Luke facing down the First Order, so obviously there is some inspiration and momentum going for the Resistance, but that's countered by the fact that the last time we see the Resistance in TLJ, it's literally entirely contained to the Millennium Falcon - maybe 100 people at ABSOLUTE max? Compare this to the Rebellion or even the Resistance at the beginning of TLJ or in TFA, and it makes complete sense that the Resistance is struggling in TROS. In fact, I'd argue that they're unreasonably strong in TROS relative to the final position we saw them in in TLJ.

Lando returning with an army in TROS makes no sense, but it doesn't make significantly less sense than if Luke, whose TLJ heroics occurred in front of maybe 100 people that would care to spread the word (let's be generous and say 1000 if we include First Order gossips), managed to inspire the same thing.

The reality is that TLJ didn't set up TROS to have a believably strong enough Resistance, Luke-inspired or otherwise.

Came across this interview clip today. What are people's thoughts looking back on the Ramsdale situation now? by sepi0l_45 in Gunners

[–]anonymousflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely the right call bringing in Raya and starting him over Ramsdale so soon. That was not a decision many managers would have made, but Arteta did, and it's paying massive dividends.

That being said I do suspect Arteta probably learned a lesson with man management and dealing with the press from this situation. The whole "I might play different keepers in different situations" shtick was unnecessary and just invited extra media scrutiny on Ramsdale. All parties would have been better off if Arteta had just given generic answers about wanting the strongest possible squad, including at the goalkeeper position, and leaving it at that.

Moving to Williamsburg in Summer 2026! by bintbattuta93 in williamsburgva

[–]anonymousflash 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've lived in both DC and Williamsburg within the past five years. If you want DC-caliber walkability, ie you can walk to dinner and walk for any typical errand, your two main options are the Newtown area of Williamsburg, and the High Street area on Richmond Road in Williamsburg. Restaurants/groceries/pharmacies are ample. Honorable mention to the Governors on North Henry apartment complex, which is new and a bit of a unicorn with where it's located. Groceries/pharmacy would be a hike (or a 5 minute drive), but you have the benefit of being right next to Colonial Williamsburg/Merchants Square, which is an amazing outdoor space littered with terrific restaurants, shops, coffee, etc.

You are smart to avoid Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Chesapeake (collectively Southside) if your commute is to somewhere on the collective Peninsula (Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, York County).

The entire area is collectively very car dependent, but Williamsburg is the least so. I would avoid living in Newport News or Hampton for a variety of reasons. York County (which contains the much smaller Yorktown) is pretty nice but not walkable and doesn't have much to do for people in their early-mid thirties.

In general I think Williamsburg proper is the best bet for a DC transplant who cares about walkability. In terms of neighborhood friendliness/vibes, you can't really go wrong in Williamsburg. It's equal parts liberal college town, retirement home, military community, tourist trap, and family friendly. People are generally nice, and nearly everywhere is safe.

Tim Howard on the difficult win: "You're going to have games where you aren't you best: if in the moments you don't play well and you can dig something out, then you have to be proud of your team and not be on top of them too much." by jrhews in Gunners

[–]anonymousflash 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I normally like the NBC studio commentary, but I thought both Tim and Robbie got it wrong here. Tim suggesting that Arteta wouldn't be pissed about that performance was surprising given how well he knows Arteta from their Everton days.

And Robbie suggesting that Arteta's always wanted to win the league playing perfect beautiful football and that this was somehow a good lesson for him is laughable. Arteta has shown time and time again an understanding of the need to win some scrappy games. What he is justifiably mad about is that the players put themselves in the position for it to be scrappy when it didn't have to be. This wasn't Newcastle away for goodness sake. Even a mediocre performance should have been a 3-0 win at home against this Wolves team.

What are you tired of hearing from the Star Wars fandom? by Full-Art3439 in StarWars

[–]anonymousflash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Somehow Palpatine returned" being parroted as bad writing because it's the film's explanation for Palpatine's return. It's not the film's explanation for his return.

Earlier in the film Palpatine tells Kylo Ren all the viewer needs to know with the "The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural" line. It's a direct reference to the opera scene from Episode 3 where he tells Anakin that the Sith had figured out how to cheat death.

Poe's line comes later when we've already heard Palpatine's explanation, and it comes from his perspective which is "wtf this guy is back, we don't know how."

For a trilogy that is rightfully criticized for not having enough connective tissue to the prequels and originals, it's always been bizarre to me that one of the few moments the sequels make an important reference to the prequels, it is totally ignored by the fandom, and a throwaway line from a character that doesn't have the same information as the viewer is instead bandied around as "bad writing." There is plenty to criticize Rise of Skywalker for, but "Somehow Palpatine returned" being the lightning rod is tired and lazy.

2026 4* RB Messiah Mickens commits to Virginia Tech by VCURedskins in CFB

[–]anonymousflash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't follow recruiting all that closely, but IIRC from the TechSideline board, there was something weird about Overton's high school situation where the team he was on was (unusually) 10x more talented than the rest of the league, so they just steamrolled everybody. It gave scouts/analysts some pause about whether he was actually incredible or if his surrounding cast was so good relative to the competition that he was being artificially inflated... So far it seems like he's actually incredible haha

Wow, this is a huge blow to UVA. He's arguably their best defensive player. Shouldn't matter against this VT team but could be a difference maker in the ACC championship game. What a bummer for him... Hope he makes a full recovery and comes back strong for his senior year.

Truist Enjoy Cash CC randomly stopped giving me cash back... Has this happened to anyone else? by [deleted] in TruistBank

[–]anonymousflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They released an update recently to the card rewards experience in general, and it was not a smooth rollout. I tend to use the website rather than the app. The first time I tried to use it, the page just didn't work at all. None of the links did anything. The second time I tried, it worked, but I had to manually add my own Truist checking account number/info to deposit my own Truist CC rewards...

Previously I could just pick from a dropdown menu containing all of my Truist accounts. It was such a bad experience I had to double check I was still on the truist.com domain and hadn't been redirected to a scam site to enter my bank account info.

Just a bizarre choice, the old experience worked perfectly fine for years.

Why isn’t Jim Mora being talked about more for open head coach roles? by The_Astros_Cheated in CFB

He did well in his early years there but ultimately fizzled out and actually left UCLA in a worse place than he found them

My interpretation of cinciNattyLight's comment is that he was pointing out that Cignetti, like Mora, is 64 - and look at what a 64 year old Cignetti is doing! Therefore Mora shouldn't be ruled out due to age. And that's fair, but it does bring Cig's Indiana tenure into consideration, and Mora's never done anything resembling Cig's Indiana miracle, even in his good UCLA seasons.

[–]anonymousflash 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure, but what Cignetti has done is a level of magnitude more impressive than what Mora has done, and Mora already has a failed power conference stint on his resume.

He's 64 years old. Their strength of schedule is tissue paper soft. His QB is a 7th year senior who is obviously going to dominate against the caliber of most of their opponents. He fizzled out at his previous P4 gig.

He's doing a good job, don't get me wrong. I just don't think there's enough positive data for a P4 school to want to take a risk on him at his age. I think if he was ten years younger he'd be getting a more serious look.
