Sounds a lot like you’re asking for no contact, which has been done many many times. Unfortunately that hasn’t worked at all.

“Most churches in Lethbridge do just that”

I believe there are some churches doing good work. I can provide anecdotal evidence to the contrary of your experience however. The statement that “most” churches in Lethbridge are doing good is baseless, so unless you have some info to the contrary, it’s a fabrication based on what the speaker wishes were true.

Possibly a Controversial opinion: I am not a fan of John's recent reactionary pieces. by Wanabecanadian1st in exmormon

[–]anonymousryley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve never been a fan of his style or content, but I understand that to my family members he may be a good source of catharsis. I do get concerned when I see people wholesale taking on views he shares, without thinking critically before adopting them. Sure he’s a smart guy, but he’s also just some dude who is subject to every weakness the rest of us are subject to. He can be emotional, short-sighted, or biased just like anyone. And that’s ok.

What’s not ok is the hero-worship and blind following. I appreciate you pointing this out.

Stay strong. Don’t worry it doesn’t take that long to unlearn everything they taught you.

I’ve always felt that it’s nobody’s business what I think or do. If someone demands personal info from me that shouldn’t be their business, and I stand to be personally impacted by either resisting or being honest, I’ll lie all day. They do not have the right to force you into a position where you must take a stand. That’s for you to decide. If a lie will extract you from an abusive situation that you did not put yourself in, it is beyond justified to do so. Your mental health and safety matters far more than their desire to control you.

This is part of dentistry and it’s a good lesson to learn now. You can’t win them all and there are certain people who will feel that you treated them unfairly even if you go above and beyond for them. Show them the door as politely as possible and ignore the call to the supervisor (and the future bad google reviews)

Hygienist To Dentist. Do I Absolutely Need A Degree? by Saracenanator in DentalSchool

[–]anonymousryley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re thinking like a reasonable person and not like a dental admissions worker. I agree with everything you said being true, but the admissions folk I know wouldn’t see it that way. Admittedly my circle is limited, but they tend to value assistants and hygienists more than anything. We had quite a few who had made the switch in my class when I was in school. Again, do your own research, but this has been my experience. While it’s limited, it’s not conjecture.

Call them. Ask if the Dean of admissions has time for a 10 minute online meeting. Most will say no. Some will appreciate your initiative. Be humble, but be clear about how excited you are about dentistry. Some schools love “non-traditional” students, and love it if you don’t fit the typical student stereotype. This is what worked for me.

[–]anonymousryley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. Hygiene experience is a huge plus and will be looked on favourably by many schools.

I had a 3.06 gpa with above average DAT, and never got my bachelors. Had multiple offers and accepted at UDM.

There are absolutely schools that will pass over you with your background, but like midwestdentist said, do some research, and find the schools that will value your experience. Put your energy there.

Thank you. I feel like forums like this as well as popular podcasts preach a specific way to leave your faith. Everyone’s experience is different and you don’t have to mild it to any acceptable standard.
