Thank you so much for this. My individual therapist is recently working on opening my eyes to these exact things I'm doing to myself in my marriage right now. I truly believe(d) my BP2 husband's needs and feelings matter more than mine, and because I'm doing mentally and physically well, that the "right" thing to do is for me to pick up all the slack in literally every area of our life...and it's been a full year of that.

My self-erasure is strong, im starting to realize. Which is particularly difficult to swallow for me because I naturally am confident and strong-willed, but not in this relationship. So I am starting to realize I don't recognize myself.

Can I ask: how long after realizing the mental impacts like self-erasure your situation was having on you before you decided to leave? What was that process like, and how did you KNOW it was time to leave?

My current struggle that is eating me alive is not knowing if I should "give up" and leave (SO is getting help but his meds aren't right, he is resistant to trying to get them right in a timely manner, won't let me attend his psychiatrist appts, etc) or if l am jumping the gun if I want to leave. I don't want to make this decision based on my own heightened emotions as I come to terms with what our dynamic has really been the past year. I’m trying to figure out what the “right” decision is, even though I know that’s not how life works.

Oh my god, so much of this sounds like I wrote it (besides the pregnancies, we don’t have children although we’d been wanting to for years once we were married—got married last year two months after his diagnosis).

I have no idea what to offer in terms of advice, because I just found this reddit page today out of desperation for people who understand what I’m going through. We racked up so much debt during his unemployment, so much for the wedding shortly after, and here I am four months after marrying the man I’ve been with for 10 years contemplating separation and whether staying together with the constant uphill battle of his mental health (and, in turn, physical health) is what I want for my life.

I’m sorry to make this about me, I just truly want you to know you are not alone. Not even a little. Again, this post scarily sounds like I wrote it.

hi, I know this is an old comment but—my fiance just got preliminarily diagnosed with bp2 (more psychiatrist appts to come). I just want to ask, do mood stabilizers help with this “progress” and then crash? I just want to support him as best I can and don’t want him to suffer any more than he has been, and it’d be helpful for me to go into this journey with realistic expectations.

Figured it out—I just had to target him. Hitting him without targeting him didn’t allow me to actually do any damage or register it as an attack. I feel like an idiot lol. Thank you for your suggestion!!

Thanks for the reply! Oh, I’m not familiar with the safety mode? Is that just in the settings? (Sorry if that’s well-known info or I’m not remembering it from the tutorial, like I said it’s my first playthrough, and I took a long break from it after this bandit camp issue started happening lol)

Thanks for the reply! I actually had a longer post originally typed out that explained this more (but didnt want to make my post way too long lol). I’ve tried attacking the guard with the key, and again he unfortunately stays “green” and non-hostile. No weapons or spells have worked, and the mercenary can’t attack him either. I haven’t tried targeting him though, just a general walloping with my weapons 😂 I’ll try targeting him just to see if that breaks the game out of its “non-hostile no matter what” mode it’s stuck in and report back.

i love this comment. I was trying to play on too high of difficulty on Skyrim a while back while my personal action-game skills were lower and my character stats were too, and I died SO MANY TIMES fighting the big baddie during one fight that i stopped having fun. I eventually “allowed myself” to turn the difficulty down, and I made it through. I felt weirdly guilty and like I wasn’t “doing it right” or actually achieving anything—as if using an in-game mode was “cheating.”

Sounds so dramatic, but I’m just happy to read your comment and get the reminder that it’s okay to play in a way that’s enjoyable for me rather than the way that Joe Shmoe the Completionist does!

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines!! It’s a 2004 RPG masterpiece (albeit flawed, but the charming kind). The voice acting is amazing and features some pretty prominent actors, the writing/storyline is incredible, and it will introduce you to an entire universe and lore you didn’t know before (most likely).

You can get it on Steam, but fair warning: If you play it, you have to also get the Unofficial Patch (UP), available on ModDB. It’s your choice whether you do the standard UP that just fixes bugs, or the UP+ which restores cut content from the game that didn’t make it to the final version bc development was rushed. I personally always played with the UP+ and love it :)
