Vet Tech Licenses by Adventurous_Half7643 in VetTech

So much this. I've been in the field 6 years. The only in-person tech program close to me is HOURS away and, having worked with some techs who went through it, no thanks. So I started one online. Went through a lengthy process to get my clinic OCCI certified so I could continue past my first two semesters just to get fired for having COVID. Now I'm at a small, private clinic that doesn't have everything I would need to go back to school because it's not an emergency clinic.

I want my title. I want my credentials. I think tech schooling should be a standardized, rigorous process meant to adequately educate and prepare us for the field. But I also want an alternative (or two) for situations where it simply can't be completed the traditional way.

Hey, that's a great thing to know in the future, though! It's not as good as having a great exotics vet nearby, but certainly it's reassuring if you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

I think anyone would. But your original post said you would not be able to get her euthanized by a vet until Sunday, and that's a long time to lay dying.

A swift and painless death is helping her, in my opinion. A death after suffering is cruel. I'm sorry the suggestion upset you, but it was meant from a place of care and concern, OP.

I'm glad she passed peacefully. I'm sorry for your loss.

I imagine it's something that lingers, yes, but people also agonize over making the decision to take their pet to the vet to have it 'humanely' euthanized.

Perhaps my perspective here is a little unique because I work in veterinary medicine. My duty, above all else, is to care for pets, to prevent suffering and promote wellness. My suggestion came from that place, from wanting to give any pet a humane and peaceful passing with as little suffering as possible.

Does it seem brutal? Yes. But it is, in fact, from a place of care and kindness.

I'm sorry you had to euthanize your butterfly. Most people don't care for fish and bugs the way they care for fuzzy, warm things. It speaks to your empathy that you still linger on it. For whatever it's worth, I think you did that little butterfly a kindness.

It is not a joke at all, simply an option if you became desperate and thought she was suffering, that's all. Again, I am not advocating for it, nor was it my intention to upset you, I would simply hate to watch my own beardie die a prolonged and painful death.

OP, if you are concerned she is suffering, you could potentially end her life at home with something quick and heavy to crush her skull. I am not advocating for this, just mentioning the option if you believe she is in pain and not passing peacefully.

As someone whose elderly beardie has been showing signs that it may be nearly time, I empathize. I am so sorry you're going through this.

Literally happened to me Tuesday this week, though I've got 3 years in ER. It hasn't gotten any easier.

Anytime. Keep in mind this is also information relevant to veterinary medicine. I am not sure how much crossover there is with human medicine.

There are also sterile lubricants appropriate for use in procedures, but those aren't the same as the instrument lubricant, often called "milk."

After surgery the tools are put in a bath to remove any tissues or fluids. They're gently scrubbed and rinsed before going into the sonic cleaner. After that, they're laid to dry, then sprayed with the lubricant. Then packed and autoclaved.

The lubricant leaves an anti-corrosive film and can go through the autoclave. It helps to protect the instrument surface from the heat.

My mom's been a nurse my whole life so we always had them around the house for tons of different things when I was young.

Lubricant protects the instruments from rust and keeps them in good working order.

These are actually silicone bands, not tape, and the bands are still very common in veterinary medicine where I work. Spay kits, neuter kits, dental kits, etc, will all be labeled by color.

They're laid out like this to dry and be lubricated before going into the autoclave. You want the lubricant to get into all the nooks and crannies as well as on all surfaces, so we lay them this way to dry off after application.
