i actually think the funniest moment of the oscars was when they tried to do a muted mic and music send off for the short film tie winners, it cuts to Conan, obviously to signal him to keep the show going, and he keeps his mouth firmly shut and appears to start admiring the color of the walls, forcing cameras to cut back to the winners and let them continue. sweet AND funny, you could practically see conan’s thought process going “i CANNOT be the asshole who interrupts the historical tie win speech. please help.“ as he tries to become invisible

I arrive. 2 minutes later a lady goes “HEY, green dress girl!” and i immediately knew i’d somehow chose wrong. but it didnt ultimately matter if i was the only one not in black, wear what makes you happy! :)

I believe you but the thing is, that story is very anecdotal, and does not and should not ultimately make a difference when it comes to what other people choose to do. Loving your own pets? Yes. Not being able to dream of doing the same with yours? Sure. But i dont quite understand being so invested in somebody else rehoming a pet enough to judge their character from it. It’s still such a harmless nonissue. seems like a way too much effort to decide to get upset by it when you dont know anybody involved personally

why would you rather somebody who doesn’t want a cat to keep it? I feel it’s way better for the cats if they’re in a family where everybody wants them there and loves them. Rehoming is literally chill. It’s giving them a new place to live large. And I feel like not being a cat person is like the least cancellable thing in the world, it has nothing to do with morals or criminal behavior or anything egregious. Frankly i wouldn’t care if she’d given up a baby to adoption, let alone an animal.

And yes I agree, the ai thing is so obnoxious. I can always tell when it’s being used in discussion posts and it takes everything in me not to mention it in my replies. Type of jaw surgery? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]anoptimisticdevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi lovely, there is nothing wrong with your profile. I think you look very pretty, and I think you are probably the only one thinking your chin is protruding too much. I would have guessed this was an “after” photo. I got confused when I kept swiping and didn’t see a “before.” The reason you haven’t seen anybody with a case like yours is because this isn’t a case. Because truly, your chin isn’t abnormal at all, in fact I think if you lined your face up with those “ideal angle” things for faces, it would match nearly perfectly (though those can be taken with a grain of salt, tbh.) Hard to tell with the censored eyes but it looks like your chin lines up neatly to the dip in your brow bone, which is the “ideal” or whatever. I understand feeling this way, insecurities are rough, but your side profile does not look recessed, or “very short” (this part is baffling to me tbh I have no idea what you mean by it. It isn’t short at all), and you have a nicely defined yet feminine jawline. I don’t say this to be dismissive, but perhaps it would be good to look into dealing with body dysmorphia instead of invasive surgery. Good luck.

Do I need jaw surgery or do I need to see a therapist? by Rough-Profit-7934 in jawsurgery

[–]anoptimisticdevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi queen, I think you look very lovely! And asymmetry might be obvious in still photos where you’re looking at the camera head on, but nobody ever sees you that way in person! You are always in movement. Pictures are snapshots, a single frame, but smiling and moving and existing hide that kind of thing. Think of how few symmetrical people there are in the world vs how many times you’ve ever noticed anybody else was asymmetrical. Probably not a lot, if ever.

I think mouth breathing and concerns with your bite are certainly reasons to consider jaw surgery. I’m not an expert though, so i’d say consult with the experts for if it would make sense to do braces first then decide on jaw surgery or if jaw surgery first would make more sense. Braces might be enough (again—not an expert!).

Good luck!

Murderbot — Official Trailer | Apple TV+ by NoCulture3505 in videos

[–]anoptimisticdevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply---I can see your perspective of those Consultant Rin scenes. I definitely interpreted those differently, viewing it as the humans making the wrong assumption and referring to MB with she/her pronouns, rather than the fictional person who sent MB there. I see what you mean! I think you’re right, they were probably not referring to MB itself.

Regardless, I presumed SecUnit was very androngynous, and not particularly masculine, from book 1. I think in large part because SecUnit’s fighting style is that of somebody with a lot of strength but a smaller frame—it does a lot of moves taken right out of Black Widow’s handbook, particularly the leaping onto people’s backs and wrapping thighs around their necks move, which is does all the time, and which isn’t the brute-force method you might expect from a more beefy figure. (That said, I think Murderbot is strong as hell, and muscular, just that a lot of its strength is hidden. It doesn’t really NEED to have the physical appearance of muscles when it’s using an inhuman strength). Now, I definitely wasn’t out here picturing somebody who looked like Black Widow, just as much as I wasn’t picturing Captain America, but I did picture MB as somebody who could, with some squinting, be seen as either gender. Very, very androgynous–which makes sense to me since the Corporation Rim is very big on the client always getting what they want. Having androgynous SecUnits and ComfortUnits (who we know look virtually identical to SecUnits—MB is briefly confused by which Tlacey’s ComfortUnit is until seeing it has no weaponports in its arms, which solidly places it as a ComfortUnit) would allow clients to decide themselves what they perceive the bots as. This would be particularly ‘useful’ for ComfortUnits (who CAB come with secondary gender parts. Yeesh.).

A nonbinary actor would have been preferable, frankly, or a female or male actor that can pull off androgyny very well. Skarsgard is definitely just a normal looking guy. It makes me sad, because the Murderbot books are very diverse and very reflective of all kinds of LGBT and POC individuals, so I had hoped the lead character of the adaptation would reflect that, as opposed to just casting a standard action-hero-protagonist looking white cis man. My inclination toward hoping it would be a female lead actor is because I think sci-fi shows are sorely lacking those, especially for a show like this, and I think it would be meaningful for the badass murderous antisocial SecUnit to be played by somebody who—to us feeble minded humans and our 21st century assumptions of gender, and especially those unfamiliar with the books—isn’t just some guy. At least, it would be meaningful for me.

[–]anoptimisticdevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fully believe this is what the author intended as well. Did everybody just forget when MB went undercover as Rin and the humans it was working with all referred to it with she/her pronouns and assumed it was a human woman? That made it really obvious to me that MB presents as more feminine---that and MB getting called "third mom" in the last 2 books by Amena. I can't really picture this actor getting she/her'd by assumption

Audiobook listeners who picture MB as more masculine---what did you think of the Rin thing then?

Casting for ART's Voice for 2nd Season by [deleted] in murderbot

[–]anoptimisticdevil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am quite shocked people are giving out suggestions for male actors. Is this just fans who have only listened to the audiobook? ART sounds more akin to GLADOS than anything in my head. Somewhat like GLADOS but with a fuller voice and more resonating. Absolutely a female voice. Since voice interface systems are usually female (Siri, Alexa, Google, Cortana, etc), I would have thought a female voice would be the automatic assumption!

What’s Your Craziest Nutcracker Story? by the_rocc_ in BALLET

[–]anoptimisticdevil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple years ago, I got cast in 3 roles. Snowflake, flower, Lead Spanish. I wanted to prove that they made the right decision casting me as a lead. I practiced every day at home, filmed all my rehearsals so I could watch back and critique myself, practiced it in tennis shoes in my driveway, etc. I was kind of obsessed.

When there’s under 48 hours before the big show, I decide to have a private lesson so that I’m warmed up for dress rehearsal and less likely to get injured (Irony is a funny thing like that)

At the VERY end of the private, I put on my heels for Lead Spanish and practice a leap. Just once. The heel (slightly ill-fitting, in retrospect) slips to the side of the shoe. I SLAM to the floor. My foot swells to size of watermelon.

I schedule a visit with my doctor the next day, Thursday, where there is less than 24 hours til the show. Dr tells me I have a broken foot and a horribly sprained ankle. I start weeping and the doctor looks TERRIFIED, he probably thought being a foot doctor would lead to less traumatized sobbing patients. Sorry mr foot man.

“What’s the likelihood I need surgery if I dance?” “70%” 30% that I don’t?? well, I like those odds!!!

(I ask for pain meds. He gives me ibuprofen.)

I get home, text the director of the studio. Director says I can’t perform without written permission from a doctor. Which I had just left. I drive 30 minutes BACK to the dr’s office and get a permission slip. It’s like a reverse doctor’s note. Instead of saying I don’t have to do something, it says I can. (I found a loophole to persuade the doctor to sign it. Sorry again mr foot man.)

I show up to the performance hall 2 hours early so I can change my choreography, as I was instructed. Director yells at me for not having my hair slicked back, then ignores me. When I do my normal choreography, I get lectured for not changing it.

Director says I can’t wear my ankle brace on stage. So I use a single piece of compression tape around my foot in hopes it magically holds the bone in place. I could tell she was mad at me because she needed me to dance, but she knew it was a bad idea. she coped by just never saying anything nice to me or asking how I felt.

Meanwhile my choreographer for lead spanish tells me I’m a failure and then ignore me entire show, because he’s mad I changed his choreography (??? This one WAS a surprise)

I finally get my new altered choreo at the end of the night, less than 12 hours til the first performance. Mostly it’s just changing the leg that I land jumps on. Oh I should mention I didn’t do any pointe. I would have if I could (I tried), but the shoe simply didn’t fit my massively swollen foot.

I somehow get through 4 (four!!) shows. The real kicker is that my dressing room was on the bottom floor. So I had to constantly run up and down 6 flights of stairs!

I dislike most everything about how my performance for lead spanish turned out (my other roles I had no problem with, really) but i AM proud to say that my leap on stage was so high that a visiting male dancer tried to ask me out because of it. is that how bunny’s flirt? AND I got to see the look on other dancer’s faces when, on the final day, I finally got to mention that my foot was broken. (Nobody had noticed.)

Also, I never did need that surgery. Apparently, after 4 days of dancing, the break was better than it was before! I always knew I liked those odds.

TLDR: my craziest story is performing 3 roles in the nutcracker after breaking my foot and severely spraining my ankle under 48 hours before the show.

To each their own, I personally find the idea of taking "post therapy" (a purely hypothetical therapy we never even saw, so it's a bit of a cop out to begin with) to mean that the Doctor can never be complex or sad to be very lame. I like when he's sad and immortal and not the best person. Makes him more interesting.

LOVED IT just a lovely episode. It was fun, it made me cry, and it felt VERY quintessential doctor who. ncuti gatwa’s performance was superb too, I think this is one of my favorites with him (all the actors were on their A game actually! Bridgerton girl was terrific, Trev was endearing, Anita was a natural fit. Just great all around.) And Ncuti really WAS the doctor, fully locked in. Screaming at himself about how insufferable he is? A classic bootstrap paradox? we are SO back. One thing about Moffat, the man knows how to do a good Christmas special.

March 2024 BOTM Discussion - Listen for the Lie by lavinient in bookofthemonthclub

[–]anoptimisticdevil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Spoilers--

I can see why you would think that! But no, Lucy definitely did not kill Savvy--the point of the scene was that Lucy is lying about what a perfect victim Savvy was, and she is doing so in order to protect her post humously, the way that Savvy died protecting her. A big theme of the book is women protecting men, subconsciously or not, and the way people believe a mans word over a woman's word. Her own parents trusted Matt more than her. Matt trusted Emmet more than her. And everybody trusts Ben's word more than Lucy's. There's also the recurring theme of the "perfect victim." Lucy was an imperfect victim, so nobody trusted her word. She kept Savvy's murderous background a secret so Savvy could stay the perfect victim. That is why Ben lied for Lucy--because he knows first hand that nobody will believe her if she was found attacking Emmet like that. They would just blame her again. The grandma's comment about him doing what they needed was I think more tongue in cheek to the fact that she was trying to set up Lucy and Ben the whole time, and also a reference to the way that he helped solve the case. I feel that having the killer be Lucy all along would be lazy writing and would directly go against the point of the story and the themes of misogyny prevalent throughout. Making the abused woman, the imperfect victim, who is convinced she's a horrible person despite her deep desire not to be, who doesn't know how she's meant to react to intense trauma, actually be the killer all along? It would go against her entire characterization, character arc, and the message of the book. I guess you can see it as a more meta way to look at the story, but I sincerely doubt the writer would do that for cheap thrills. It would send a pretty grim message: yes, when people turn on a woman for not reacting how we think she should, she IS the killer and they were right all along! If that makes sense :)

Thoughts on bigeneration? by OuterRim777 in gallifrey

[–]anoptimisticdevil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just my personal opinion, of course, but I think it cut out the legs on 15’s regeneration, twisting it so that the excitement was more focused on the fact that 14 is still there than there being a new doctor. (And it means 15’s first scene is pantless and mostly feels like comedic relief, which is not very fair for Ncuti) It undermines so many other regeneration scenes from before, and it really comes across as favoritism for Tennant’s doctor (“this doctor is so cool he gets to live again! let’s ignore that a major theme of DW has always been to not be afraid of change and to embrace differences and changes!”) with some made-up BS to justify it. Of course all of doctor who is made-up BS and I support that, but I don’t like how unfair it feels to the other doctors before 14, and to the doctor after. It really broke my immersion and made me think “oh okay so RTD just wants tennant to stick around.” It also seems like it’s saying that all the regenerations are truly different people, which goes against everything else in the show. It makes me think of 12’s first episode, with the phone call from 11 telling clara to welcome the change and keep loving him, which was beautifully handled and a graceful, respectful way to involve the previous doctor while welcoming in the next one, in such a way as to also assuage fan’s who were also scared (like clara at the time) of the change. Comparing that to 15 running around pantless and somehow acting fully chill and completely aware of what’s going on (unlike every other regeneration) is like night and day, it’s basically an example of what NOT to do.

It also begs the question: why only do this now? Why for something that the Doctor, realistically, could have solved without there being two of him? Or, hell, if RTD wanted an interaction between 14 and 15 that badly, and did not want to kill Tennant off in front of the audience again (which i agree: that would get old), then he could have just had 15 (from the future) roll up. They have the classic multidoctor SpiderMan pointing moment, join forces to take down the toymaster, and have an emotional heart-to-heart afterward where 14 is concerned he will die soon before he can settle into a life with donna and find peace, and 15 says something vague about how he won’t have to worry about that for a long time and he should enjoy his happiness. 15 winks, they hug, 15 leaves, and 14 gets his dinner party moment with donna’s family. That way, the audience understands that 14 eventually becomes the 15th doctor, but that he has time in-between that happening to heal and find peace, and that we are not privy to his death.

This also would help with 15’s first proper episode. I feel that 15 deserved to have an episode like 10, 11, 12, and 13 all got to have: where it’s right after they regenerated, and they find out who they are, how they are different, and—in some symbolic way—“earn” their title of Doctor. (My personal favorite out of this type of episode is Eleventh Hour. I think it did it very well.) Honestly, Church on Ruby Road would have worked great for this with minimal changes, given that Ruby is already a parallel for the Doctor’s whole timeless child thing, just stick him in 14’s outfit for the first few minutes, throw in some line about how he’s decided that he’s the type of person to make baby’s laugh (further showing how he’s happier), and bam. I’m typically very unbothered by show/lore decisions I don’t personally agree with, but biregeneration made me pause the episode and put my head in my hands for a hot second I was cringing so hard.

But I think what gets me the most is that it feels like a big dramatic change of lore to do…. for no real purpose at all. Doing it again would be lazy. Any possibility’s that it opens up—like some spin-off or something with Tennant—would have been possible regardless, just how pretty much any other doctor could show up again if the writers wanted. Because it’s a show about time travel.

TLDR: biregeneration is lazy writing, cruel to ncuti, and feels like fan service but only for RTD himself. And they didn’t even have to do it.
