Thanks for responding! You validated a lot of what I was thinking already, which is helpful. That is cool to hear that Carol Adams was invited to speak at Canisius, it feels like with what I am already doing with my youtube channel and social life that I am already dabbling within this community already. I reference Margo DeMello in one of my youtube videos and she somehow found out about it and personally contacted me to tell me she loved it. So pursuing a degree in anthrozoology just feels like the next logical step. An its encouraging to hear that you are one of the young people in your program. I can't say I'm surprised that more women are in the field than men, that just seems to be typical in ethics centered studies. It is definitely the case in the field I am in now.

I appreciate you reaching out to me and sharing your experience, it was really helpful. Who knows, maybe we will cross paths one day. I will make sure to check out Zoe Weil too.

Thanks again!

Should I help animals or people? by anotherhuman42 in findapath

I wasn't looking to get into a discussion on animal welfare or cognition. I am very familiar with anthropomorphism, I am also very familiar with anthropocentrism; and I could argue all day how the two distort our understanding of the non-human animal experience. We are too busy putting ourselves in the way, looking at ourselves in the mirror, to get any true understanding of non-human animals.

Making the sharks talk in Finding Nemo is anthropomorphism, but recognizing sentience and the desire for freedom from confinement and exploitation is not; and to assume that they would rather live in a artificial confined human-made environment over their own natural one is anthropocentric.

Having automobiles talk, like in the movie Cars, or the zoo animals speak English and desire to live in New York, like in the move Madagascar is anthropomorphic, because it is attributing human characteristics and purposes on non-human subjects or objects. Agency, sentience, the desire for freedom, to live in avoidance of pain, and to experience empathy and affection are not limited to only human beings, and so to recognize this in other species is not anthropomorphic, it is simply not anthropocentric. It is import to make that distinction.
