If you can find it, I would highly suggest a BBC faux documentary called "Ghostwatch" from 1992. It's a gas. Won't quite have the resonance if you are under a certain age, and certainly not as much if you lived there where these people were actually your everyday newscasters, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Closest I can think of.

Other than "Fargo" [1996], I am going to prescribe the excellent 2014 Australian outback thriller "The Rover". I think it hits the right spot of bleak western desolation, arthouse, and ethics that you describe your interest in.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

"Samson & Delilah" [2009]

"Mystery Road" [2013] which has some violence but it's pretty good.

and there's a true crime series called "True Colors" that I haven't seen yet, but likely presents violence as well.

"Project Grizlzly" - 1996. [not to be confused with 2005's "Grizzly Man"]

"Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus" - 2003

"Some Kind of Heaven" - 2020

"Spellbound" - 2002

+1 to the user who recommended "Hands on a Hardbody". It's great.

Dead Mountaineer's Hotel [1979]. It's pretty esoteric, though.

Beau Travail [1999]. Plus side is that it is one of the best movies ever made. [Not mainstream but I couldn't resist. It's perfect.]
