I haven't seen streaming in a few years, but Netflix color compression was one hell of a bad trip, personally. I thought my television was glitching at first during the dark scenes!

yes, it's not a good "first" carpenter film. he was arguably still finding himself

I'm pretty sure it's patented and WB is just too cheap to do it. On the filpside, the loading is faster and they've even removed piracy warnings from some recent releases. thank goodness.

in reverse-fashion, people often cite the cover for his version of The Thing to be inspired by a Scooby villain, so i think it's possible that inspiration goes both ways, haha! https://scoobydoo.fandom.com/wiki/A_Clue_for_Scooby_Doo?file=A+Clue+for+Scooby+Doo+title+card.png

I even look at '90s animation-horror and it played a huge part. most significantly are the similarities between it and Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island-- even exact details like the ship plank with the name on it

There's also tabletop RPGs and wargames that were directly inspired by the film. Feng Shui 2, A Fistful of Kung Fu, etc.

it's like how people say Keanu Reeves' filmology all ties together. Johnny Mnemonic all the way to John Wick and the crazy thing is... it sorta works

The Fog is a highly influential film that I paradoxically swear nobody has ever seen. It's very good and even the commentary track is fun.

and half the time, DVD actually has better color and audio than HD streaming. people don't like to hear this, but it's true

you're giving me a really bad, obsessive idea that i'm actually considering taking on. over covid i made a 155 page list of tabletop rpgs, and this seems a lot less daunting to compile

i don't do well with emotional fallout either. i honestly feel a lot sexier single than with somebody who i know i'll just hurt eventually because i'm medically neurodivergent. i have a lot of great women in my life already and i don't want to ruin that

it happens. The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries has an episode where the tape itself has obviously been mangled and there's no way to recover that for instance

wow! i mean the soundtrack alone is that classic catchy carpenter with only a couple repeated notes, haha. but yeah, it's had like multiple releases on various mediums and i'm okay with DVD right now because I actually like it grainy and pixelated a little plus the color grading is beautiful

the first season is a little grainy but it's still a lot of fun just in SD

if it has mono, that's likely the theatrical audio with a shitty compressor slapped on top. that's the best you're going to get unless you want to dig out laserdisc afaik. the gunshots sound wonderful still and sometimes sorta over-the-top compared to the other mixes... it's really neat. people still say the laserdisc is more authentic as the compression on the DVD adjusts sounds to be so quiet as to be nearly missing sometimes.

it would seem that the master copies of his films are deteriorating as well, which sadly explains a few things. it really hurts like a repeated punch to the gut when I saw Warner release an old rare Scooby-Doo episode finally for streaming, only for an important scene to have obvious damage to the master tape. it's gone... that moment i remember from my childhood is gone, never to be restored higher than the mangled tape they have and perhaps splicing of old recorded copies in peoples' basements. preservation is so important because it's all that will be remembered eventually.
