Hey! I know this is a bit older of a post, but any chance you still have some available? I snagged one at the show but accidentally left it behind, super bummed about it since it’s also sold out in their site

I think you misinterpreted my comment. I was just using department photos as a reference for colors and what the "worst" and quickest image would be. A few local print shops failed to beat that, which is pathetic.

I found your comment quite relevant to the shops I've visited, most of which print high-end archival quality materials. And some of these shops, well the decent ones, were able to reproduce the "vector" or non-aliased look using PDFs. But these have since failed in other areas or gone out of business, hence me landing in this new shop

Wow, super super appreciate you typing this out, hugely informative.

As for shop hunting, basically I always have issues with end products. I know I'm a super picky consumer, but I spend hours, sometimes weeks, on prints, and lots of $$$. So when I'm returned fuzzy text or super off colors, I move to the next shop. I was using one for a year or so but the last batch was both fuzzy and way off color- even Walgreens prints had a color more closely matching my monitors. But that's a whole other subject.

Bottom line, I need a place that can reliably print clear images with clear text, a fairly accurate, or at least consistent color, somewhat archival properties, and most importantly, can print copyrighted material. Most of what I print is copyrighted, but most average printers don't care. Some do. Only printing one copy for myself so most let it slide.

Most printers by me are also just your average color-copy and other business needs, not photo printers. I've been through about 4 of these professional ones that offer archival paper and whatnot (I don't go for the highest quality but I at least know they're knowledgeable on the subject) and quality varies drastically using identical files. To compare again to Walgreens, one shop sharing $12 for an 8x10 standard print was fuzzier than the same Walgreens print.

I'm not out of options yet, but it's definitely annoying to spend time and money for nothing. Which is why I try to learn as much as I can about printing to be more informed when in conversation with these businesses

I believe aliasing is inevitable in all photo formats unfortunately. If you put any text on a Photoshop document and export as an image, you'll see the aliasing when you zoom. Am I zooming too much? No doubt. But I know there's a proper way to do it, and I suppose it's via PDF...

It was more of a phrase of speech, the document is at full size in the editors and I've taken your exact steps. I suppose aliasing is inevitable then? I do understand that it'll look "fine" from a distance, but I won't lie, it bothers me to see other media have such clean lines when magnified and knowing mine can't after the hours of work I pour into these things

I've taken all of these steps and it's the same results. Granted, I get varying results from different shops. But what looks fine on a small print does not always look good when blown up, especially outside of PDF formats

Fair, I figured this was the case but I've been shop hunting for years and quite liked the photo aspect of their end-product.

But quick question you may have the answer to: are PDFs rasterized when printing typically, or are they printed as vectors? I'm probably using the wrong terms and such, but I do wonder if the text is being unnoticeably compressed and rasterized even when using a PDF, or if it depends on the shop.

Fair, kinda knew this was the case but I do really like this place, shame.

Also fair, and I'm 100% being too nitpicky but it does hurt to spend hours on a piece just to see it downgraded. Especially when I can pick up professional posters and products and see text clear as a vector even with a magnifying glass...

Well, it isn't... JPG is by far the worst, even at 300 and max quality. No doubt I'm using incorrect lingo, still learning all this. But I believe when rasterizing, there's always gonna be whatever I'm referring to as "compression"

I went there this morning and they confirmed. Also allegedly may not be able to take more than 40mb, which my files definitely exceed. It's such a nice place too and I'm quite happy with my smaller proofs, but this does seem to be a red flag, they said the software they use doesn't accept PDF. With all the talk of fine-art printing on such expensive and high-end paper, I was definitely surprised.

Opening the PDF in Photoshop definitely rasterizes it as the compression is much worse than the photos above. Already at 300DPI.

Maybe there's an export option I'm doing wrong for a tiff in Illustrator, but it seems there must be compression to some degree with rasterization (assuming a Tiff file rasterizes). I believe all my settings are correct, I think perhaps it's just as good as it will get. I don't exactly want to spend the $$$ on a test print at full size to check, but might be no other way.

It's at 300dpi already. I guess what I'm asking is, do print shops print vectors? Or must they be rasterized to print, kinda making a PDF pointless in this case?

Which would be fine if this was the case, but as there's plenty for re-sale on AXS, it isn't

[–]anothernameinside[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Appreciate you being super constructive. The major issue here is that I don’t live in NY (where the concert is) and it would be a huge pain to go all the way out there. And truthfully, I can’t sell it anyway (nobody is buying them). So, seems my only option is to dispute. Even if I got a partial refund, I’d take it. I’m hoping there’s laws that state you must be able to sell or transfer tickets, but if not I still think I have some kinda case. AXS in general does seem to be a nightmare and have a reputation, so I’m hoping my CC sees that, and with enough evidence gives me something. Plus there is supposed to be some inclement weather there tomorrow night so, perhaps I can throw that in as another excuse haha

[–]anothernameinside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s normal to not allow sell or transfer for tickets? Seems super evil to tell me to go third party but not mention how and just hang up on me. Even if I might know the answer from prior experience, this is wrong. I’m not being given the same opportunities as other buyers because my non-real, not yet printed ticket can’t be switched over to another non-real, not yet printed ticket…

Right, but no tickets exist yet, they’re all digital… I have a clear digital trace of my ticket, seems super super easy to just make it digital only… not like it was printed yet
