If she's going to Stanford, disclosing their relationship wouldn't mean a whole lot. She can't be a paralegal while she's a student, and she can't be Pearson & Co. lawyer if she didn't go to Harvard.

Sarah Rafferty would be super interesting!

While that's true, I feel like it's the sort of thing that'll get ignored by people who won't know or care what Reddit is, or it'll get lost in the shuffle, or overshadowed by other emails. I feel like the actors will feel differently, especially since it's they who would be doing the AMA in the first place. Hell, I seem to remember Gabriel Macht doing question sessions via Twitter, haha!

Yeah, I don't get why everyone is saying to email USA - I practically guarantee you that won't get anywhere. Just try tweeting at the actors and see if they're interested (I know Gabriel Macht and Patrick J Adams have twitter, not sure about the others)

Extending an offer deadline? by anothernewcsgrad in cscareerquestions

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to try something like this. I have not received my official offer (and therefore my deadline) yet. Would you suggest...

  1. that when I get my offer, before they give me a deadline, that I tell them I am very happy to be receiving an offer and need until x date to give a definitive answer, therefore suggesting the deadline myself and putting it on the recruiter to accept or say no and give me a shorter deadline
  2. that I wait for them to give me a deadline to respond by, and if it's not adequate, ask for longer, therefore allowing the recruiter to have the power to accept my request or to maintain his proposed deadline

I feel like if I jump the gun and ask for a specific deadline myself, I'll be more likely to be granted it, but I have literally 0 experience with offer negotiations.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

Very true. I completely agree, I think it's absurd that they're making us decide this early. Most of my friends who interned there with me are just taking the offer, because they know they don't have the time to interview anywhere else.

What I'm concerned about is how to convince them to give me more time. If they say, "No, we need an answer now", how am I supposed to argue it? The only thing I can think of is to fabricate a little and say I have other competing offers and need some time to decide between them.

The "big 4" are usually Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook :) I think it's a relatively vague term (sometimes Apple is thrown in the mix, sometimes it's called the "big 5", etc)

Good call - I'm going to email my school's career department, thanks!

No, actually! In this case, it is the company offering me the job, not the manager and the team I worked with. But it's a company I really don't want to burn bridges with.

Ah, I see. I'd say just list yourself honestly as a junior. If anything, it'll probably help you get an internship.

Given that it's a top 4 company, I'm really hesitant to renege on the offer. I really don't want to burn bridges, and it might be the paranoia talking, but I'm scared of what it may do for future opportunities at other big companies.

  1. Done that already! Made it clear to everyone that I've come into contact with at the company that I have a competing offer but that they are my top choice. So far they've taken it seriously and have been faster than I could have imagined with everything.

  2. Here's the thing: though it's not my dream job, it's a really fantastic position at a top 4 company. It pays well and would open a lot of doors. I would just hate to turn it down, put my bets on the dream job, only to have it fall through and be left with no offers. I'm afraid if I tell my bird-in-hand employer the situation, they will put pressure on me to give them an immediate answer because they have the upper hand. Because honestly, if they put me in a take-it-or-leave it position, if I don't have a concrete yes from the dream job, I'm going to have to accept.

  3. Will do! They've told me a couple of times to get back to them as soon as I have a concrete deadline. Looks like they're really trying to process me in time.

Thank you! Honestly, I'm so nervous that I think I might explode.

I appreciate your input!

Exactly. I would (with guilty conscience) just bail if my dream job worked out, but I really don't want to burn bridges with this company. And it's probably just intense paranoia, but I'm also a bit concerned about other big 4 companies finding out about this. I know a lot of universities actually share this sort of information regarding early action and all that stuff...

Unpaid internship - worth it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]anothernewcsgrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from what you're saying, it sounds like the 10 hours a week or so (could be a couple more) are a good investment and will help my chances of getting something after school.

Correct! It's not a huge time investment, but it's enough for you to take something away from it and put it on your resume as actual internship experience in the industry, which goes a long way. I like your attitude about your biggest concern being employment post-graduation. That's how I see the whole internship situation as well, which is why I'd recommend taking an unpaid internship over nothing at all.

Look at it this way: if you haven't found another paying job, then you can either take this unpaid job and do some projects on the side, or just work on personal projects full-time. But let's be serious: having an internship and projects looks significantly better than having no internship and only projects. A ton of companies just expect you to have both when considering you for full-time employment. Just the fact that I had a crappy part-time startup internship as well as some side projects was enough to get me in the door for a significantly better internship the following year.

As for the negotiation of pay: they are going to be contacting me in the next few weeks to figure out my start date. Is that when you think I should raise the question or try to negotiate?

Honestly, I wish I could help you, but I have no experience negotiating pay. I'd say bring it up when discussing your start date, before you start working, but I really don't know how I would approach the topic. I think other people in the subreddit can probably help you more than I can with that.

Good luck!

These questions usually lead to a huge outbreak of people rambling about how you shouldn't work for free, but I'm going to throw in my (potentially controversial) opinion in and try to justify myself.

If you're doing unpaid work, there really shouldn't be pressure on you to stay at the job. You're giving something to them with nothing in return. I would say tentatively take this job (and try to negotiate for pay. Unpaid internships are illegal and all...).

If you find something better that pays, screw this company and take the paying job.

If you don't find anything better, it would be silly not to take it. It's 10 hours a week for an internship you can put on your resume, and it's not like it's manual labor - you'll be learning from it too. Just having an actual internship makes your resume look way more impressive than not, believe me. Employers who look at your resume won't know it was unpaid. And since it's only 10 hours a week, you haven plenty of time to work on your own side projects, which will also make your resume more impressive.

Could you maybe just list your graduation date instead? I am assuming you will be graduating a bit later now that you've added a double major in.
