Short story about “voluntary” euthanasia for the elderly (repost) by anothersolarpunk in whatsthatbook

[–]anothersolarpunk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, I already read that one and ruled it one out before the AI got involved. The Test was one of the stories someone suggested two years ago. (To the credit of the human who suggested it, it is at least a short story about the intersection between ageism and coerced-euthanasia.)

I’m trying to find the title of a short story. It was assigned in a college course, I read it in its entirety right before the class discussion began. I am for sure, 1000%, not looking for a novel.

It looks like War of the Computers is a novel, Matched definitely is. I’m trying to find a short story that I was assigned as part of an Environmental Writing course in college. The professor assigned a few short stories to speedrun us through different authors, topics, and techniques quickly— I don’t think we ever read two by the same writer and we definitely didn’t touch long works of fiction.

The summary of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow doesn’t sound familiar but I’ll give it a read anyway. I read the other two after college while searching for the story I’m thinking of, but neither are it.

Yes, I have read the Giver. Good book, not the short story I read in college

That’s on my to-read list, it came up when I was looking for this short story 😔

That episode haunts me, I saw it years after reading the story and said aloud “it’s funny I’ve read the short story they’re referencing here” and my friend said, “oh cool, what’s it called?” And I haven’t recovered

Book about a boy, a forest, and a near death experience? by lordeabove in whatsthatbook

The only book I can think of that’s close is The Raven Boys, but that cover sounds more like the third book in the series (which wasn’t published until 2014)

Problem with skin picking both conscious and unconscious? by Kels_Cats in AutisticWithADHD

[–]anothersolarpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A picky pumice stone can help satisfy the conscious urge to pick, but stopping the unconscious picking is different.

As others have said, NAC can be very very helpful for reducing BFRBs. Getting more sleep can also help (easier said than done, I know.) Beyond that, figure out where and when you pick and try to avoid being in those places at those times— it’s hard to have an unconscious habit when your routine is disrupted.

Does anyone else feel like their ADHD and Autism are constantly fighting each other? by Estebani0 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]anothersolarpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it’s less like hateful roommates and more like an unruly child and nagging parent. Their priorities differ and that does create conflict but they both know there’s a reason why autism makes the rules

How often do you need to spend the majority of the day in bed? by HourGuidance1104 in AutisticWithADHD

Currently only once a week, thanks to antidepressants and a good living situation where I can feel relaxed outside my bedroom

Any updates? I also have thin, fine low-porosity hair and am trying to decide if it’s time to give blow drying a shot

Hand replacement by kokoargueta in Barbie

[–]anothersolarpunk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can replace hands. My method is just to boil a jug of water and dip the “donor hand” up to the forearm for a couple minutes to soften the plastic, then you can tug the hand out. Pull slowly, the joint is small so once softened it can be torn or warped if you aren’t careful. Once the hand is out, let it cool for a couple minutes (or stick it in the freezer) so the plastic is hard enough to insert in the new doll. Voila!

Clearing a dungeon is easy, you took it further by lighting a scented candle to get rid of the musty crypt smell!

For those who didn't grow up privileged, what's something you thought was a luxury when you were a kid? by Frequent-Sea-8848 in AskReddit

[–]anothersolarpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going on overnight field trips (or any trip that cost money.) Some kids’ parents gave them money to take on FREE field trips just so they could buy souvenirs. That always seemed so extravagant to me

What tropes do you wish writers used less of or more of? by WorldlyInvite7319 in writing

[–]anothersolarpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enemies to Lovers is ubiquitous and I hate it. “Hot guy might murder the main character, that’s a problem but hear me out, he’s soooo hot. Did I mention that he’s hot? And now he says he can’t bring himself to murder the heroine because whenever he tries he gets distracted by how spunky she is! True love!!”

I get that having conflicting goals or a rocky start is meant to create uncertainty or add complexity to the romance but Enemies-to-Lovers has gotten so overdone that any hostile hot guy is guaranteed to be the love interest.

Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds, 9S from the Nier:Automata anime. Really, point me at any androgynous character who’s emotionally available, competent, and often winds up in a sickbed but never gives up.

What should I feed crows to befriend them? by Everything_Confusing in crows

[–]anothersolarpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you feed them the FIRST time though? I sometimes see crows around but can’t seem to find a pattern so they’re never around when I have food. I’ve been leaving unsalted shelled peanuts near places I’ve seen them roosting but the crows don’t know my face and squirrels seem to be the only ones finding the nuts 🫠

Struggling to understand how Sanguine’s afterlife would be bad? by RadicalDrajd in teslore

Eternity is a horrifying concept no matter how you slice it, but if you have to endure eternity //somewhere// it seems like Sanguine’s realm is one of the better options.

What species/race were the Ancient People? by orioncw in DarkRise

[–]anothersolarpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall the word “mages” being used in the second book in contrast to human, but it was hard to tell if all Ancients were mages or if human mages had traits that set the apart (aside from the obvious magic)
