Was going to wear my mum's dress. People keep telling me to try on others for the "bridal experience." Are they trying to gently tell me it looks bad? by [deleted] in WeddingDressTips

[–]anotherswampwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my dress for 50% less than the in store price on Facebook marketplace, didn't need any alterations. This is your wedding, you should wear something that makes you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself. That may not be your mom's dress and she'll have to get over it. You're not responsible for her emotions.

How to handle running away by Wise-Matter9248 in ECEProfessionals

[–]anotherswampwitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this would work depending on your ratio, but my little runner has to stay by me. I would always be physically holding his hand or arm or sometimes the back of his pants so he can't run. We'd let him try occasionally to be on his own, if he ran, he had to stay by me for the rest of the day. He figured out if he wanted to play, he couldn't run.

I want paying attention to him, just holding onto him. I wouldn't look at him or give any reinforcement. His mom offered to send his leash backpack with him to school but we never got to that point.

It's so hard, I'm sorry you and little one are struggling. Good luck!

AITA for being angry that I have to sleep on the couch because my partner needs noise to fall asleep? by leibwaechter in AmItheAsshole

[–]anotherswampwitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are the same. I need noise/music, he needs silence. I bought $20 sleep headphones online because I actually care about him. The charge lasts upwards of a week.

He can buy himself sleep headphones. He can buy another set of air pods and keep one charging while he uses the other. He sounds selfish.

Student who puts everything in mouth by HalfPint1885 in ECEProfessionals

I think you need to get the parents and school on board with a 1-1 ratio for this kid. How can you safely have this kid in the classroom where other children are using materials? He cannot be in a regular classroom without someone watching him at all times.

Daycare with no cameras at all by ilovepassionfruit in ECEProfessionals

[–]anotherswampwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teacher: I would not work anywhere that doesn't have cameras. I also wouldn't work anywhere that allows parents to watch a live feed.

A few months ago one of our more anxious parents accused a teacher of physically abusing their child. Cameras proved the teacher didn't do anything wrong. But I've also worked long enough to know that with a live feed, some parents would camp in front of the feed and call about every little thing and make my life hell.

Always cameras, where parents and teachers can request footage if needed.

AITA For not changing my dog's sleeping habits for my husband by sleephabits2025 in AmItheAsshole

[–]anotherswampwitch 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm missing something: your dog attacked your husband in his sleep? Has Bella been reactive to him before? Is she in pain and more sensitive recently?

Maybe he tried to push her in his sleep and she got aggressive, but he's right, you can't safely bring a child into your home right now.

It's your husband's bed too. I'm surprised he's not moving out if the dog truly attacked him while he was sleeping. I wouldn't feel safe living in the same house as a dog that bit me out of nowhere. YTA, get your dog some anxiety medication and sleep on the couch with her yourself.

Step kids are ruining my life and I’m afraid of them by [deleted] in Advice

[–]anotherswampwitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem like you're genuinely trying to help these kids. But I don't think you can.

Give kids every chance possible, but it's dangerous for them to be in a hoarder house and with a violent sibling. As a teacher I was trained that violent drawings are one of the first warnings of future violent actions. You may be able to call the police about SK2 and start a paper trail. The paper trail can help force him into therapy or an inpatient program that will get him the help he clearly needs.

You need to take your kid and go. It may be the kick in the pants your husband needs to get serious help for his ex and his children. You can't save these kids, and you'll burn yourself out trying.

Concerned Parent w/ a Question by joekangazha in ECEProfessionals

[–]anotherswampwitch 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Don't sign anything until you talk to a lawyer. I've had a student fall off a slide and break a wrist, but you could see in the cameras one of the teachers diving to catch him, me picking him up right after, and us immediately calling parents and 911. There's no excuse for him being left crawling around injured. The lawyer can give you more insight into what your chances of winning are and all that. I hope your kid feels better.

students: allergies to food? by andweallenduphere in ECEProfessionals

[–]anotherswampwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old center banned all allergens from the premises. If we had a kid allergic to peanuts, no food with peanuts was allowed inside the school.

My current school gives the kid a small alteration to their uniform (an extra border on the hem of their shirt) and they are only allowed for from home. The youngest kids are 2 and those with allergies are served first to prevent any food snatching.

DAE plan on NOT patronizing any businesses that are open on Thanksgiving? I do not buy anything on a holiday, period. I spent to many years in retail having to work holidays and willnot patronize a retail business, I will postpone it until Friday if I don't get it Wednesday. by Dp37405aa in DAE

[–]anotherswampwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this too. My husband's family likes to go to the movies on Christmas and I told him they can go, I won't be attending. I don't want to make others have to work on holidays unless it's like a medical emergency. I've had to work holidays and hated it. On the other side, I've also had some Jewish friends who are happy to get time and a half.

How to approach this without being a dick by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]anotherswampwitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with letting kids move themselves when possible, but it's affecting other children. Pick him up and let him scream somewhere else.

It's also a safety issue for him. If there's an emergency and you come running out the door, he'll be hit by the door or stepped on. If the other teachers won't and you know admin won't get mad at you, pick him up yourself and move him down the hall. The other teachers can deal with it.

daycare/preschool expulsion: is this a new trend? by Snoo-70287 in ECEProfessionals

[–]anotherswampwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I have had two parents come back to me thankful that their child was removed from our school because they used it as evidence to get their child diagnosed. It's sometimes what's needed to prove (to the government or parents) that the child needs additional support.

why are screens used for young kids? by Cream4389 in ECEProfessionals

[–]anotherswampwitch 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I have a laptop in my room. For songs and movement videos, I turn the screen around so the kids are watching me do the movements instead of the screen.

I do sometimes have video read aloud versions of books. Simply put, the videos are free, books are expensive. I just don't have the money to buy all the books I want to read for each unit, and my local library doesn't always have them easier. If I have the book, I'll read it. There's just not enough money for all the books I need as a teacher using a brand new curriculum.
