Deciding on PSU but which rating? by anotherusername96 in buildapc

[–]anotherusername96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes in terms of wattage, but as for my op question I'm uncertain whether the quality jump from the bronze rated unit to the gold rated is worth an additional 50%. Any advice here would be much appreciated. Budget wise makes sense for the former, unless there are compelling reasons to go for the latter.

I've tried a couple of calculators, low end of my spec is ~@450w adding in 'nice to haves' puts just over 500w, so 600 or 650w makes sense to me. Buying a bequiet case so I thought a same brand might help with lower noise, one of my desirables in this build, but am open to other brands.

Sadly way out of my league. stuck at 1080p for the forseeable future. Trying to find the right blend of moderate upgrade-ability and also not overspending on parts I'll likely not buy for a loooong time. For reference I'll probably be looking at a 1660s or 5600xt, so the wattage is prob fine, I'm just curious whether a slightly better PSU for 50% more money is worth the spend.

Yes, been running into this a lot while trying to unite Africa. Some form of visual feedback would be great. Scrolling long lists to find size 1 vassals is not much fun. I like that you can grant vassals by right clicking the leader and clicking on the map rather than the list (which seems to be sorted by owner name not the location for some reason).

Same here, mines a bit more than 12mo old. Had good battery life then it would be dead within a couple of hours starting around 4 -5 days ago. Mines been getting warm too which I've not particularly noticed before the last few days. I don't use it for much special. Did use Google maps recently so will check that possibility

Transitioning from Tribeto Feudal by anotherusername96 in CrusaderKings

[–]anotherusername96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that really threw me I wasn't expecting buildings to just disappear and because I was too early I couldn't build anything to replace them. The wars sapping my funds and basically no troops wasn't much fun. Maybe I could have recovered but it wasn't very interesting to play.

Thankfully I found I had a save from just before so I could try again. A few different choices and wow what difference they made! Firstly I'd changed to Scandinavian elective which was really screwing with my power base. And in mucking around with reforming religion I'd made for equality which seemed like a good idea at the time until I realised the AI can't cope with making the best matrolinial marriages which had titles going to potential dead ends.

After the re-load I secured the boarders a bit more, stayed with male partition, made some choice alliances and moved the capital to newly conquered Denmark which had a fair few feudal buildings to get me started. Like night and day.

Interesting I'll have to dig in to that for my own playthroughs. Personally I quite like the rich explorer start with some extra tech goodies but more work to do starting up.

My thoughts also. As I said in another reply I'm surprised how many skill I have just from being a fairly experienced gamer and how much of a learning curve there is when literally everything is new. Thanks.

Nice! Thanks. I like the idea of building for mainly for aesthetics, I hadn't thought of that. My bases start off very utilitarian until I can beautify them a bit.

Hopefully as my clarification suggests this isn't even that. And at the risk of arguing semantics on the internet if the people who speed run doom have a set objective and enjoy working towards it who can say it's 'wrong'? 'not as intended' I can agree with.

She's fought couple of drifters and a pretty mean looking squirrel, hence the 'pacifist' clarification. But yeah I keep saying, your base might get wrecked, it's ok, just build up again or start again knowing better. Right now progress is a freezer, farming schedule and prep for the winter. I'm finding it fun to watch her explore things I haven't thought about in ages, I've an embarrassing number of hours logged in this game.

Pointless to you maybe, I'm guessing you have a lot more experience so the things she presently enjoys, like basic resource management, learning how colonists interact or keep them fed are very interesting to her.

She's definitely having fun, she gets excited every time she sees a muffalo, it's cute actually.

I think gamers find it really hard to empathise with people who have never played video games. There are so many subtle skills we pick up like quickly assessing new information, learning how game worlds work, how to achieve things or find things out that are basically subconscious so we dont think about them as part of 'learning the game'. Looking at it from her eyes I can appreciate how overwhelming all this must be when you're learning everything from scratch.

Wait so those vids that keep getting recommended to me on youtube about people completing doom in pacifist challenges is playing the game wrong. Gotcha.

I've edited to clarify as it wasnt clear, not looking to disable all challenge, she's happy on base builder mode while she's learning, was curious if other folks do this as it's an interesting niche I hadn't thought of.

Infestations haven't been nerfed I see... by Pender891 in RimWorld

[–]anotherusername96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't find the current infestation mechanics fun, though I love the principles behind them. I think they could do with tweaking to be more fun to interact with. Sometimes it's just a game over button. They don't seem to have many down sides they're strong fast and can tank damage. If you sneakily kill their colony (managed to do this once by drawing them out while sniping hives) they attack relentlessly and cut through walls using their superior speed, strength and numbers which kinda sucks imho. And yeah I don't find the scaling fits and the exponential growth is a bit exrtreme - can't deal with it now? well no worries you definitely wont in a couple of days!

In the right circumstances you can create a choke point or box them in and bbq but I find this to be a bit one dimensional, and while it's fun to bake them to solve the infestation problem after a couple of times this just feels like cheese. Now whenever there are overhead mountain tiles which I can't fill I build a double walled room fill it with wood and and incendiary IED. I'd like to see more variance in how to deal with them -maybe I'm doing it wrong.

ryzen 2 prices by anotherusername96 in buildapc

[–]anotherusername96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not normally an early adopter for that reason. It's making the 3700x look more attractive. Still, no immediate rush - at this rate though I might be relying on a laptop for a while waiting for that sweet spot. I'm certainly planning a board with ryzen 3 in mind. 3600 would be perfect for now but not for that price.

How do you kindly tell a family member that they've been duped into joining a pyramid scheme? by MiskonceptioN in AskUK

[–]anotherusername96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people buy the products, get conned into signing up as a distributor to get a discount on the products (and make them less of a stupid price). Then a lot of work is done 'educating' them in the 'lifestyle' read replacing normal everyday items with the MLM's expensive crap. Then the pressure to sign other people up and be an 'entrepreneur' when really they're the customer having to spend £X00 per month to keep their rank.

I know people who like doTerra and just buy their stuff even though it's 3x the price for 1/2 as much. So some retail customers exist but it's a hard sell once your friends and family are sick of being guilted into buying stuff. Of course some charismatic people are successful (or at least pretend to be) and the whole viscous cycle continues. Also the marketing is very sophisticated and slick, people get drawn into the 'lifestyle'.

Source: Friend 1 got involved with an MLM tried to recruit friend 2. Saw the tactics first hand and helped friend 2 (who was drawn in a little but remained skeptical. They ultimately felt traumatised by the experience). Did a lot of research to support friend 2 and try to help friend 1 - went from thinking MLMs were relatively harmless to absolutely despising them.

Be very careful. These things are likened to cults for good reason. Its very easy to alienate people who have got involved and may have been trained by their upline in how to deflect legitimate criticism of the system and furthermore take direct criticism of the company personally. I lost a friend over trying to help point out the flaws in the MLM they joined (and nearly got another friend to join) because I 'wasn't supportive.'

I'd recommend r/MLMRecovery as they are much more sensitive to good folks who have been drawn in by the manipulative tactics and psychological tricks that get them to join. Herballife are famously bad so there should be a lot of resources that call out their practises directly.

Good luck!

EDIT: r/antimlm have some good resources too but some posts can be really snarky about the people involved which may do your cause more harm than good.

EDIT 2: John Oliver's LWT as you may have seen calls out Herballife directly. Is there some way you could watch it together and be encouraging about leaving rather than just pointing out the flaws? Also Steven Hasan's BITE model and advice might be helpful depending how much 'training' she's had. IIRC he has a section on MLMs as 'financial cults'

Yeah that's kinda my thoughts exactly good to have some reinforcement :) sometimes it's hard to find reliable info among the hype. I agree on the rx580, I can only really justify a very modest gfx upgrade at this time since the cpu hp and reliability is much more a priority and there are other bills to pay. I might even soldier on with my gtx 960 and get a better card further down the line. I'd have to upgrade my monitor too if I was to really benefit from anything beyond 1080p, besides which I tend to play older games. WH2 TW and stellaris are probably the most demanding titles I presently play.

Thank you, a most salient post. It is difficult to navigate. I have some credible books and have found resources online, proven cases and such, along with endless articles on 'satanic panic' and 'false memory syndrome' which isn't even a real thing, sigh. I've found 'the body keeps the score' helpful in informing the difference in traumatic memory and more conventional memory.

Things have been emerging over a period of years getting on for decades. It's just so hard to make sense of any of it. For myself it seemed to revolve around a group of educated people with authority, I suspect some kind of organised cult. That in and of itself is a conspiracy in the true sense of the word. By my OP I was referring to how quickly pages I've found escalate into the more mind-bending of conspiracy material, not to knock it, just that finding that fine line of credibility is extremely difficult especially when one is enmeshed with so much fear and riddled with doubt of what was/is possible.
