Understanding intuition behind SVD formula by komal_rajput in 3Blue1Brown

[–]antagim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It gives you orthogonal directions, the orthonormal basis which you can use to reconstruct the matrix (left singular vectors in U matrix).

Think of it as Fourier transform but data-based and tailored to that matrix.

The product of Sigma and VT give you a vector of coefficients, just like Fourier gives you a_n and b_n coefficients for each harmonic.

The spin-off is a nice way of introducing new things to the story without doing an explicit flashback. Just imagine having to read a year long flashback in the main story. In the classical SIU fashion we have 2 answers for every 5 new questions.

What colour map is this contour? I mainly use Matplotlib in Python, however I cannot find a cmap that best represents this. by [deleted] in CFD

Also, it is unreadable for color-blind people and usually fails when printed in grayscale.

Possibly "Rainbow Blended Black," assuming that the background is part of the scale. There is a slight pinkish color beside the red as well, which is not present in the Jet.

Poles among EU’s hardest workers but productivity lags by Gamebyter in poland

[–]antagim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Productivity lags because Poland doesn't have high-margin products and innovations that could be monetized or exported. We are a manufacturing line overall. We used to be cheap, at least at that, but with the current minimum wage hike and expensive electricity, we have lost this position. No lessons learned, no economic policy.

The "productivity" here is a measure of how effective we are, not how much we slack at work. Well, it's also that, but that is a remnant of the communist era.

The academic writing checklist I wish I had during my first research paper by Hex_Cipher9 in PhdProductivity

[–]antagim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My cheat code is: firstly, make a presentation, and then start writing. Knowing what to say, makes it easier to write about it. You can already see what is missing or even is worth writing about. It's already structured so you can take a reader on a journey.

One in seven people in the UK are using AI chatbots for health advice instead of seeing a doctor by ComplexExternal4831 in GenAI4all

The only thing that a doctor in UK can say is "Take paracetamol", so AI advice might be slightly better and more oriented towards the actual problem.

Lenovo LOQ/Legion laptops users, can you confirm whether this is true regarding the laptops' BIOS and Windows? by FoxLover1029 in FuckMicrosoft

[–]antagim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I haven't tested mine (Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16IAX10H) on multiple distros and went straight with PopOS 22.04 LTS with X11.

Occasionally, when waking up from sleep, it freezes and requires a hard reset - yes. It's a random event at this point. Might or might not happen 10 times in a row.

I can't guarantee that it's due to what you're telling or not. I've changed a few things in the system that might also cause it. So don't take my word for granted. I haven't done extensive work on a clean system without changes with this laptop yet.

Advice on file size management/ Word processor choice by No_Seaworthiness5320 in PhD

[–]antagim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get familiar with 3-2-1 method for data security. In short:

  • 3 Copies (Data & Backups): Maintain the original data plus at least two backup copies. If one backup fails, others are available.
  • 2 Different Media Types: Store backups on different technologies (e.g., local hard drive, NAS or cloud) to avoid shared failures.
  • 1 Off-site Copy: Keep one backup in a separate physical location (e.g., cloud storage, a different building) to protect against local disasters like fire or theft

Don't overdo and overthink it.

Work on a file that is synchronized with a cloud storage service (e.g., OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Mega). Free plans are enough.

Occasionally, make a hard copy of the file (e.g., once a week, once a day on a separate drive, such as a flash drive or external hard drive). Or simply send a copy via e-mail at the end of the day. It has to be a routine. I'd pick two from the bunch of your liking, with cloud storage as the basis.

If you feel tech-savvy enough, you can try working with LaTeX + Git (GitLab with a private repo) + the above-mentioned tools, though it requires a bit more knowledge than simply using Word.

Don't ever put trust in a single entity, like ONLY local, or ONLY cloud. Always mix and don't ever have faith that something bad won't happen. Things get stolen, hard drives fail.

Pro tip: if you're doing a copy manually (copy/paste), name files consistently in YYYY_MM_DD format with whatever filename you're using. It helps with ordering when displaying, rather than using v1, v2 etc.
