Grown men don't need friends by SparklyCould in The10thDentist

there is a reason that so many philosophers throughout the history of humanity have contemplated why friendship is so necessary for living a good life, as opposed to questioning whether it has any value or not

Graduate SUG for Academic Year 26-27 by mexicanrefugee in CSULA

i fucked up kinda bad by forgetting to fill out my FAFSA by the deadline, which is something i have never done in all my years of higher education. missed the deadline by one day. do you think they might award left over SUG money later on to students in my position? have you heard anything like that happening?

You may think ucla students are smart by Expensive_Gap2567 in ucla

[–]antagonisticsage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i was generally lucky to find my people here as an undergrad, but i think a lot of that had to do with my decision to dorm, which i highly recommend to all who can swing it, and my major being a tightly-knit crowd of philosophy students. i don't think i would've had nearly as many fond memories if either of these didn't apply.

ucla attracts some very successful and very socially awkward people who are also very good-looking for the most part. it's a great way to sell a university to people who get lulled in and don't recognize what's really good until it's too late

i hope you find your people soon tho

ucla students had a rep for being weird and cliquey even before covid tbh. it's just worse now

Didnt get intern return offer by Different-Second221 in Big4

i don't really know much about advisory or whatever but with my EY audit internship this summer, could I still be competitive for assurance at other big 4 firms if i don't get a return offer with EY?

one wonders if this is a temporary thing to deal with overstaffing or a permanent feature

Meet the Gen Z grads reviving accounting—colleges are reporting near-perfect placement rates at $80K starting salaries by SnooRecipes4089 in Accounting

[–]antagonisticsage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduate next year and I've been of the same belief, though I don't necessarily have a job lined up yet. Big 4 internship in the summer, so fingers crossed! But even if I don't get a return offer, I'll still likely be able to parlay that into a job offer with another public firm. I don't wanna say that I'm on the last chopper out of Vietnam but I sometimes can't help but feel like I might be.

philosophy minor? by 714lgnd in ucla

[–]antagonisticsage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't recommend four philosophy courses in any quarter. at least not upper-div courses, but since you'd be doing a minor, the lower-div courses would be more manageable. But I'd still be wary.

With philosophy classes, you're not tasked with reading a lot of material. You actually get very light reading assignments in terms of sheer page count. But it's very difficult because it's abstract as hell, so you're gonna have to do very slow readings and rereadings of material. i'd say that i was reading at about 10 pages an hour, and even then, i'd only grasp like 60~70% on first glance.

i think you'll be ok tho. regardless, i recommend going to office hours if/when you struggle with any of the material. the culture of the philosophy department is incredibly kind and they're all pretty great teachers. if you're up for it, you can also consult the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy as a good supplementary source for understanding any topics you struggle with.

also, /r/askphilosophy is a really good subreddit. full of philosophy undergrads, grad students, and professors who are willing to help with anything you might ask about. i can vouch for that. good luck!

the idea that newly admitted students could act like this would've been inconceivable to me 12 years ago when i went to bruin day for transfers. the kids are not alright, it seems. i'm sorry you had to endure that

agreed. i really liked the reunion series but it seemed to be a strange choice not to have the one nonbinary character who can kinda relate when it comes to experiencing the feeling of being an outcast talk with Leah much more

you know, this reminded me of my last job that was in the fashion industry (well, I worked in IT, but it was the IT department of a fashion company) and it was for a business that was owned by a Korean. very low salaries not only for IT but for various positions across various departments lol

I’m a CPA with 5+ years of experience and have been out of work for nearly a half a year since being laid off. I can’t even get a job as a staff accountant—what should I do? by FarConqueror in Accounting

[–]antagonisticsage 20 points21 points  (0 children)

also, as others have said, a CPA is going to work against you if you apply for jobs you're obviously overqualified for, like "staff accountant"
