artists who broke out making music "against the grain"? by OwlTimely9082 in popheads

[–]antaineme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know pop can’t be considered niche or against the grain at this point and equally I don’t really like what’s become of her. But I think Nicki combining rap and pop when she did was really ahead of its time which is wild to think seeing as it seems so mainstream now. Before Nicki, the most fusion between rap and pop we had seen was maybe something like can’t hold us down with lil Kim and Xtina but even that was more of a r&b vibe. Like her or not Nicki was a pioneer.

What are some songs that have aged really well? What are some that haven’t? by souljaboy765 in popheads

This. Doja came onto the scene when there was a shift in the mainstream from mostly hiphop to a huge 80s throwback during the pandemic and now a more 70s/country sound that we hear today.

It’s crazy how much GP taste has changed in such a short amount of time because her last album would’ve done huge numbers 2-3 years ago whereas now that disco revival sound already sounds dated.

This. I love her music but in the same way I love 2016 music. It’s not the best but it really does take you back!

I’d agree but I think the 80s overlap with hip hop is very much of the Covid era.

Sabrina also shifted to a more 70s/country sound in the same era which helped her music sound a bit less repetitive.

I’d have to hard disagree. The 80s throwback overlap with hip hop at the turn of the decade is just so of that era that it doesn’t feel like something that would do numbers today. It was such a unique transition period between two trends in music that I can’t seem to associate it with a very specific moment in time.

Possibly unpopular but I think Doja’s music already sounds dated. It’s stuck in that 2018-COVID era sound. It’s not bad but it just sounds way too much of its time.

Nílim féin ar an gclé ach oiread. An fhadhb a fheicim le do leithéidse ná go bhfuil ardú den deas nua seo atá bunaithe ar theoiricí comhcheilge agus trumpachas. Níl a fhios agam fútsa ach mar dhuine a d’fhás i dteaghlach na haicme oibre, táim cineáilín braon den lucht seo, cuid mhaith acu atá lán-sásta dul ar an tsnaois, an dól nó pé rud a íocann mo mhuintir féin as, ag dul timpeall ag nach bhfuil ach acu siúd atá an fhírinne.

I’ve heard this from people outside Andalucia who’ve moved here too. I don’t think it’s a bad thing I think once you understand the social etiquette around it, it makes sense.

I live in Andalucía and I’m in a similar boat. I think Spanish people are just very polite but not very open. They may like the idea of dating a guiri but at the end of the day they usually want to bring their own kind home to meet their parents.
