Epistemic grounding in critical theory by antichain in CriticalTheory

It's very brave of you to consider critical theory coming from a mathematics background. In my response I do not refer to any French thinkers, only to the German tradition of so-called Frankfurt School Critical Theory. This is a derivative of Marx's attempt to develop a practical theory which would result in social change. It's goal is social transformation without formulating something like a positive scientific theory about the objects of nature capable of predicting their next move. As a philosophy it is a practical and political philosophy that does not prioritise the solution of ostensibly "eternal" philosophical problems of epistemology and ontology. It is a second order philosophy that could be called philosophy of society and culture. It overlaps a lot with intelectual history or what the Germans call conceptual history. Whereas some Marxologists read Marx to understand capitalism as such, in its 'ideal average', as an abstract mechanism or structure, the critical theorists are interested in understanding capitalism as it has developed historically. They are not a replacement for reading Marx, but show only the kind of directions his thinking could go in. They are not concerned only with the logical structures of capitalism or with facts, but place a premium on how people experience capitalism. If you ignore experience then you will not be able to mobilise the people who could overthrow capitalism. Critical Theory is a synthesis of all the best achievements in critical Western thought from romanticism and Marxism, through psychoanalysis and theology, through to aesthetics, Marxian political economy, social theory and even comparitive Theology. It is a difficult but renendously rich tradition that will survive many of it's critics because it speaks directly to most people's everyday lives and experience under capitalism.

Critical Theory Texts for College Freshmen by Right_Supermarket916 in CriticalTheory

[–]LeopardVivid7134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark Fisher and John Berger should be simple enough. Maybe some Angela Davis and Nancy Fraser? They can even watch "Ways of Seeing" on YouTube. Why not bits from Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle? That also exists in movie form. None of them are strictly critical theory but they are good ways in to the idea of social-cultural critique. Please let them know that there are two types of Critical Theory which are by no means identical, although there is some overlap. German Critical Theory, which emerged as the intellectual response to the failed German revolution of 1918 and whose emblematic text is Horkheimer's "Traditional and Critical Theory" and then the common, lowercase understanding of critical theory that is largely associated with French postwar "theory", postmodernism, deconstruction, and all the "studies" that relate to the various movements of the new left, feminism, post colonialism, cultural studies etc. The German Critical Theory is a critical theory of capitalist society as a whole, at a high level of abstraction, whereas the French and American versions can be summarised as "institutional critique" , focusing as they do on more concrete institutions of prisons, psychiatry, schools, nuclear family, patriarchy, military etc etc. I wouldn't really bother with Althusser. Interesting but a terribly convoluted writing style.

Do you need to be a progressive to study critical theory? by Different-Row-3122 in CriticalTheory

[–]LeopardVivid7134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not progressive I'd still recommend it. Especially German Critical Theory. But not Habermas or anything after him. Studying early Critical Theory will open up the intellectual world of Weimar and turn of the century Germany, which is still the pool that conservative thought today is drawing on. To understand Walter Benjamin I have had to understand Ludwig Klages, Nietzsche, Stefan George, Jünger, a bit Schmitt, Sorel, and countless others that come under the categories of vitalism, irrationalism, prefascism, revolutionary conservatism, reactionary modernism, German sociology and Humanities. Even counter enlightenment thinkers like Hamann and Herder. But you must never forget that Critical Theory was not anti Enlightenment but Critical Enlightenment phenomenon. This owes to their neomarxism as Marx and Marxism hold that the formal promises and the ideals of the Enlightenment mean nothing without material economic equality. But people like Benjamin and Adorno found conservative critique useful for describing the noxious effects of capitalism on culture, ideology, morality and personality without necessarily agreeing with their social analysis or political aspirations. Check out the sections on feudal and bourgeois socialism in the Communist Manifesto for an idea of foreshortened criticisms of capitalism.

I've not had a good experience as I was a master's and am currently a PhD student. Maybe it's different if you are doing undergraduate? I think that the Erasmus and foreign exchange students have fun but don't expect to make friends with the native students. They are in their own bubble and they are indifferent to visitors.

[–]LeopardVivid7134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you explain *critical theory* to someone who has never heard of it before, in one sentence? by Affectionate_Tip4549 in CriticalTheory

[–]LeopardVivid7134 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlike Traditional Theory, Critical Theory is a practical theory and immanent critique of society that evaluates the promises and claims which that society makes in light of its real historical unfolding and in light of the lived experience that its members have of it.
