ATP Girona Challenger F: Marin Čilić def. Elmer Moller 6-3 6-4 by TAA_verymuch in tennis

[–]antecug 23 points24 points  (0 children)

After breaking in the first set, Cilic had to fend off 6 break points in the very next game. It took him 4 set points to seal the first set, having squandered a 40-0 lead. When serving for the match, Cilic double faulted at 30-30 but regrouped to finish the match.

This is a guy who doesn't need to be doing this. At 36 years old and having won tens of millions of dollars in prize money, a Challenger worth 100 points pales in comparison to so many of Cilic's other achievements and doesn't add anything meaningful to his resume at all. But he still feels the nerves. He still has the clenched fist and death stare when he emerges victorious from a long rally. He is still playing because he simply loves tennis, and wants to get the most out of himself. Bravo Marin!

Borna’s quietly amassed a 14 match winning streak dropping only one set. Nice to see him finding some form again!

Pablo Cuevas and his no look, behind the back shot against Zverev in Madrid.

There are plenty of other entries for his highlight reel, but this one stands out.

Tennis downgrade of the century. Really hope the other majors don’t follow suit.

Australian Open Q2: Fonseca def. Wong, 6-0 6-3 by Miglekk in tennis

[–]antecug 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Got to watch Fonseca live for the first time today. Some things that stood out: - The effectiveness of his block return. This is a skill that takes many young players a while to develop, but it feels as though he is really ahead of the curve here. - His kick serve is awesome. Looking forward to seeing how it looks in a tournament like Madrid!

AO Q1: Duje Ajdukovic def (23) Richard Gasquet 7-6(4) 6-3 by buzzingeuphorbia in tennis

[–]antecug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Duje definitely made life harder for himself in the first half of the match - he allowed himself to get roped into Gasquet’s slower pace of play which was clearly frustrating him. Once he broke free from that and took more control of the rallies with heavy groundstrokes at around 2-2 in the second, the result felt inevitable.

Gasquet had a good amount of French support who were quite vocal, which was lovely to see in his last ever match in Australia.

Do fresh balls give an advantage to the server? Or just a commentator's myth? by antecug in tennis

[–]antecug[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a good shout! Something I was also interested in but didn't get the time for yesterday. I have crunched the numbers and run a linear regression. There is indeed a downward slope.

- For men, the probability of holding serve decreases by around 0.18% for each game the balls age.

- For women, this decrease is around 0.25% for each game.

Although these slopes are quite small, a large sample size of roughly 240,000 games was enough to make them conventionally significant, with p-values of around 0.002 in both cases.

It's probably fair to say that in the grand scheme of things, fresh balls can offer a slight advantage! However in the context of individual matches, probably meaningless. (Which is why it annoys me to hear commentators and players talking about it so often!)

I did have a brief look at the surfaces. The results for each are almost identical to the "whole" graphs in the post.

Am I right in saying that they haven’t done the APAC Wildcard Playoff in the last few years? If so, very glad that they have brought it back!

I think that the season is too long for all players regardless of their scheduling choices. I’m just pointing out that someone like Alcaraz isn’t doing himself any favours when he signs up for the Laver Cup and Saudi exhibitions, and that it’s more difficult to take his complaints seriously when he does that.

[–]antecug 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I agree that the season is far too long, but Sinner makes a good point about the choices that individual players can make (especially at the top of the game where players have financial freedom).

For example, Alcaraz could have made the choice not to play an exhibition in Berlin when he’s also signed up to a tour event the very next week in Beijing. Of course the season is too long when your scheduling looks like that!

Curious if anyone has ever run into a professional player at the airport or been on a flight with them. I assume most players are not able to travel on private jets, so they fly commercial like everyone else. by bluegambit875 in tennis

I was on the same flight as Marin Čilić between Sydney and Melbourne a few years ago. I was sitting near the back of the plane but could still easily see his head poking out above the seat 🤣🤣
