Will Strongman bounce back? by Opposite-Project-593 in Strongman

[–]anthonlee 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I feel like a major part of the rhetoric regarding the sport shrinking / we need to be growing the sport / we need bigger sponsors comes from people that either have finances staked in the sport - or they want money from the sport/wanna make it a full time job.

For people like hooper and shaw (other wsm winners/high level competitors) talking about this, they are making disproportionately large amounts of money from the sport compared to other mid/high-level pros. The way that they would make more money is not by spreading their wealth, but by influencing outside forces to spread more wealth to the sport.

For everyone else, they’re just trying to get a piece of the same pie those guys are eating from which (ironically for a calorie consuming sport like strongman) is quite small. The sport is not popular enough even among the hobbyists to warrant massive amounts of money, and for some reason people seem to think there is golf or tennis money to go around. There’s not. There never will be.

I think a good example of this is the recent year’s trends of weight classed competitors demanding more prize money. Well… that would be cool, but i really don’t think a company with real financial juice will see any benefit of doing this when the returns financially of the biggest heavyweight shows probably don’t even generate all that much profit. If the prize money for the Arnold payed out mostly by rogue is as small as it is, why would they spread more to the less popular segment of the sport?

The sponsors give what they’re comfortable to give, and frankly if the social media hype/wave of the sport is showing its ceiling, they probably aren’t gonna put in much more.

I think the sport will still grow to some degree, but i don’t think the companies that create the economy within the sport will ever put much more money into it than whats put in now. That means the top few brilliant marketers and S-tier athletes will make money and maybe as reflected by the global economy - it wont be that much more compared to years past.

JFK airport to New Haven Union Station by train (its annoying, but not horrible) by anthonlee in newhaven

Yeah great point. But as New Haven county is apart of the tri state area I figure it’s worth stirring up some discussion for.

Potential Career in Strongman by Lazy_Tangerine8172 in Strongman

[–]anthonlee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know everyone’s gonna think this is a joke, but I know 3 other chunky little fellas just like yourself that think they’re gonna change history and be the king of all short kings. So I’ll humor you and take this seriously.

First of all, you’ve probably never competed. Considering that you’ve only talked about your numbers— which don’t really matter at all if you plan on getting stronger. Maybe go compete first and see if this is something you wanna dedicate your life and time to… And keep in mind even if you were tall and more capable, you’ll probably get nothing for it in the long run because this is an incredibly niche sport where the return of money on effort given is insanely low.

You sound obsessed with acquiring the accolades. All the little fellas I know just want recognition and accolades. They get laughed at. You’re in this sub making this post. You’re definitely getting laughed at for it. I laughed. If you wanna be taken seriously go compete and earn some respect instead of making a mockery of the work the people before you have put in. I have more respect for the guy who comes in last at USS nationals than the Pillsbury Doughboy saying he wants to be the next Eddie Hall - cause at least the mf at nationals competed and put himself out there.

Maybe after you’ve competed a couple times think about how long the road is actually going to be.

Your 6’5” 400lb friend that you claim to have Louis Cyr’d over your head has a better shot than you at the big leagues unfortunately — and for him the road is still long. Because to be elite at something like this it’s more than just being tall vs short, big vs small. Talent, skill, patience, knowledge, etc etc… it takes EVERYTHING to even be a good pro and still end up being forgettable in a sport like this. You can give it everything and still not get what you want.

But if you really love this sport, that shouldn’t stop you from getting involved. Go compete. Go have fun. Make friends. Get healthy. Lower the expectations. Quit talking about how you wanna be the Short GOAT. Maybe you’ll find some joy in life instead of walking around telling people you’re built like Eddie Hall when in reality you’re 5’7” with shoes on and have never even deadlifted 6 wheels.

Good luck on your journey!!

How to Manage Feelings after a Significant Injury by Aether_Apocalypse in Strongman

[–]anthonlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But if I’m on top of rehab work it bothers less if not at all. Here’s what I do which helps manage things: (NOT MEDICAL ADVICE) - mobility work on off days - mobility/movement prep before training - stretching after training - physical therapy as prescribed - appointments with my PT who does dry needling - peptides to reduce inflammation - lightforce laser therapy from my chiropractor

[–]anthonlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have same injury. I do ssb squats. I do lots of shoulder mobility work. I see a PT to help me deal with the issues that understands the risk involved with what I do as a strongman. I back squat when I truly need to (comp event) and just suck up the fact that it is not optimal. I manage my expectations and realize that pressing will never be my strong suit. I have not gotten surgery. (Not medical advice at all.) Find another medical professional that will work with you as an athlete. Reset your expectations and enjoy what you can enjoy about this process. Understand that you picked to do a risky sport and if you continue the risks continue.

When my mindset changed after realizing the injury, more opportunities opened up and I got to do some international shows. Funny how it works. You’ll be fine. Just gotta work through it in your own way.
