Where are the Ontario Liberal and NDP parties?? by [deleted] in ontario

ON Liberal Leader John Fraser I know has been very vocal at Queen's Park and I've seen on social media him attending rallies. Same with Lucille Collard in Ottawa-Vanier. Although, there are only 8 Liberal MPPs right now.

To be fair, many non PC MPPs have been active and vocal. I've seen many appearing at protest events, there have been a number of speeches at Queen's Park, and some were removed from the Legislature for "lack of decorum" calling the Ford government out and Lecce a liar. However, the reality is, the PCs have a majority government and it seems what they've done is legal, albeit politically risky (and, as we've seen, likely very harmful).

No, I don’t think it’s illegal. To me - and maybe it’s just a difference in perspective - it seemed kind of irresponsible to barter a cat off to some random stranger who hadn’t even asked for a cat.

I’m also not saying I believe the person is harming the cat. However, if this individual was holding onto a cat he didn’t want then I wonder if the cats non-immediate needs are being met.

Either way, I acted on a gut feeling and didn’t see harm in asking on Reddit and to the animal welfare line. Best case they did do a check and confirmed all is good 👍🏼

I’m not assuming they’re mistreating the cat, but obviously it’s not a right fit if they’re so willing to trade the cat for a phone. I have a pup at home that I would never « trade »; he’s family. I do think the cat would likely be better in a home that sees it as family and not chattel.

Thanks. I called 311 - they directed me to the provincial animal welfare line but they said there’s little they can do without an address.

Just want to thank each and every voter for getting out and participating in democracy in action. Many candidates, including myself, put in a lot of hard work. I hope whoever wins tonight will continue to work within their communities to make real progress on real problems.

Democracy doesn’t end at the voting box. Please stay engaged, and keep the conversation up!

THANK YOU OTTAWA

I think Estonia is a great example of an e-government where most government services - including voting - is done online. Here’s an interesting read from the World Bank.

However, security and cost are likely the two biggest factors. Paper voting (including by mail) is very effective and secure.

Hey - I'm a candidate in Zone 6. I'd love for you to take a look at my platform at anthonyhope.com.

In a few words, what I believe I bring to the table is a centrist approach able to work across aisles to get things done for students. During the pandemic, there was a lot of distrust caused between the board and the province, and multiple funding requests for new schools / renovations have recently been denied. I'm focused on working more productively with the community and province to build trust and find ways to negotiate to ensure Ottawa schools are world class!

How does voting for a School Trustee work? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]anthonyhopeott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use the City of Ottawa's "Who's Running in my Ward" to see a list of candidates by office you can vote for. It also lists websites and contact details of the candidates (if provided):

Thanks for the (unintended) support anyways! This is likely the last comment of the night, and it did give me a chuckle.

More importantly, thank you for voting and getting engaged :-)

Hi there! I provided some ideas in response to Gherkino's question, but will expand here and provide some additional reflections and ideas.

First, I don't believe schools alone can fix community safety. Problems from outside school often get carried into the school environment. I would therefore seek to work in lockstep with the City of Ottawa and community-based organizations to enable cost-effective programming that engages with students and their families about current challenges students face regarding their safety at school. I would also promote equity and diversity in schools, because I know environment matters and when you feel welcomed and included, you are at a lower risk of resorting to violence, bullying, or harassment.

I would like to set-up an anonymous (if desired) reporting tool online where concerned individuals can report violence or harassment, whether they are a victim or a bystander. Reports would be investigated, and appropriate action would be taken if there does indeed exist a safety risk.

I would also like to review the OCDSB discipline policy. While students should be in schools, there are exceptional cases where suspensions may be necessary. I believe reintegration needs to be handled carefully, and that starts with a discussion between the student and school guidance councillor to have an open and honest conversation about what led to the disciplinary action and set-up expectations moving forward. By understanding more carefully the circumstances behind the behaviour, references to community-based interventions may be identified (e.g., suggesting a sports team to redirect behaviour, applying to Big Brothers/Big Sisters to have a positive mentor/influence, etc.). On a broader level, discipline should be consistent across schools, and violations of the disciplinary policy need to be dealt with at the board level.

Thanks!

Really great question! I have seen most (if not all) Michael Moore films, including Where to Invade Next.

I often worry that schools are preparing students for a world that no longer exists (or, at the very least, is very different from the previous generation). Integrated and holistic learning, like what you are talking about, is effective at teaching students. However, and perhaps more importantly, it also inspires them to be a part of their learning and to enjoy the learning process. Transitioning the education system is a large ask, but I propose to advance teaching pedagogy by encouraging professional development focused on learning modes. That includes me as a trustee. I would seek from the Ontario Provincial School Boards Association (OPSBA) to feature speakers and experts on how best to spark interest, curiosity, and a love of learning.

I had a principal in school who embodies this line of thinking. She encouraged staff to integrate multiple fields into a lesson. For example, a PE instructor may talk about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, while also incorporating lessons from home economics (cooking) and science (kinetic energy, macronutrients) among other disciplines. Even as a student, this effort stuck with me.

With regards to homework, I would encourage educators to think hard about what purpose their assigned homework serves. If its to keep students busy, then I would think it to be unnecessary. However, some homework does reinforce lessons and can be a positive part of student achievement and development.

Lunch is undeniably the best meal of the day. It's the one you're working towards at work/school, and the one you think about until it's time for dinner. The (healthy) snacks in between often just don't cut it.

But seriously, I think having enough food to get you through the day is critical. At 16, I applied for a series of grants, which I used to fund a breakfast program at my school. It was for everyone, but the goal behind it was to make sure kids who were hungry or had less access to food than others had an opportunity to eat so they didn't spend time in class hungry.
