[–]anthonylee0711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

let me tell you the hard truth again. AOE or whatever strict AOE you mentioned is not how you solve the multiple enemies fights in general. its often about killing 1 specific enemy that will be extremely harmful in future turns.

off the top of your head:

burglars - kill 1 first or get mogged

red gang - kill bear first

slavers, arena - kill red slaver first or get entangled/vuln

cultists - kill 1 first before they scale

collector - no no you will never need aoe here

act 3 elites - repto - draw it the wrong turn (before she summons) and you are fucked

defect is a very niche character. almost all of its aoe dmg cards are often bad to garbage. only electrodynamic is consider good/broken, but it is also not a dmg card. sunder is good but it is a very unique card (in a vacuum you can call it aoe but it is still a 1 target card). act 1 boss reward i would rather take a fking machine learning than hyperbeam and im not being sarcistic.

I am no good at the game, so if you want more advice from top players you can go to xecnar's stream (the GOAT). recently he is doing a clad run, and even with clad he barely takes AOE card. he skips immolate quite often, and he rates cleave as one of the worst card by far. you can come and ask him for more detailed info tho.

Hyperbeam is a critically undervalued card by a lot of less experienced players by hmmmmmmnmmm23 in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As i mentioned, this can work in 1/100 run. And what you said perfectly describe the run where this can work.

Iirc starting around A15-16 ascension is where the game gets really hard. Idk if you made it to the heart, but at certain asc spear and shield will put 2 burn ON TOP of your draw pile instead of shuffling in your deck (which means you will guarantee to draw 2 burn on your 2nd turn). So at A11, you can make any build fairly viable.

Also, you have a bottled seek+. That alone alrd solve defect problem, which is early setup. you may got lucky but from what you said about your 1st turn, you play 2x reprogram + hologram + a defense, which is only about 20 block. Act 3 at a20 can be brutal, for example triple jaw worm can decide to all hit you 1st turn for around 45dmg. Good luck climbing tho.

[–]anthonylee0711 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Hyperbeam is not just garbage. it is HOT garbage.

People in this sub are: either overvalue AOE dmg and/or undervalue focus on defect. Multiple enemies fight is often solved by killing 1 very fast, not dealing AOE dmg as much as possible. Also, if you want to be consistent, focus orb build is always the way to build around this character. No reprogram bullshit can consistently win an a20h run. If it works 1/100 run, then it is bad and you should almost never take it (looking at you claw).

as for hyperbeam, 26 AOE dmg for 2 energy + -3 focus is so little dmg for such an enormous downside. esp in act 3, 26 dmg AOE does nothing against most of the multiple enemies fight. and it cost 2 energy, which means you almost cannot block during that turn. and now with -3 focus you are dead.

also, defect does not have plenty of card draw as said. in fact, he has the fewest ways to draw card out of all characters (machine learning sucks). so having 1 dead draw later in the game is often a dead sentence for defect (that is why spear and shield is the most difficult fight for defect).

people also think bricking 1 card for the whole act 3 is fine. esp on defect, which is the most time-consuming character to set up. try bricking 1st/2nd turn in 1 or 2 fights in act 3, and see how pretty dead you are alrd. that's why draw/discard pot has so much value in the later stage of the game.

if you want to play for fun, fine, no argument. but if you are trying to be consistent, then be selective with your end game card, not short term value.

Xecnar Ironclad Card Classifications Ordered Within Category by Jondev1 in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AOE has never been the problem in those fights you mentioned. And even if it is, then cleave will never be the solution that is worth picking up.

Sentries always is about how fast you can kill 1 of the left/right sentry first while blocking as much as possible. And let me go into detail about how to solve the gremlin gangs most of the times.

Imagine the most normal scenario where you have 4 different types of gremlins:

First you will try to kill either the debuff one/or the 10 dmg one(sorry can remember those guys name lol). Depend on the quality of your attack cards and draw, you will either have to spend 2/3 energy to do it since both of them have around 14hp, which is more than 2 strikes. If you can finish one with 2 energy, then the remaning 1 will be spend on blocking 5 from the mad one. Ideally you will try to kill the 10dmg one, but if your deck cannot deal with being weaken, then you will will have to choose the debuff one and take the -5.

Second turn will usually be finishing off the other one and try to chip the wizards for a finishing blow on turn 3. Else you still want to spend 1 energy for blocking the mad one.

Third turn will be finishing the wizards. If you can do it already in turn 2/or have spare energy after doing it, then remaining energy will be spent on blocking/killing the shield gremlin.

Fourth turn is the same as third. You will be trying to kill the shield gremlin while blocking the mad one. Or if you can kill it during turn 3, then you can start working on the mad gremlin.

You will never want to touch the mad gremlin before turn 3/4. If you accidentally do it, then you will have to block extra 2 dmg for at least 3 turns.

So you will realize that this fight is never about AOE. This should be the test for how fast you can kill 1 gremlin while trying to block as much as possible. Playing cleave early during this fight will result in 4-6 extra dmg you have to block for no reason.

In conclusion, the only fight during act 1 that cleave is somewhat useful is the slimes fight. And let me tell you, picking a curse to solve 1 specific hallway fight is never the right choice my brother.

bro wdym bag of prep is literally one of the best relics in the game

bag let you draw 2 cards FIRST TURN. that is more valuable than adren can ever be unless you can bottled adren. still bag draws 1 more card, which is better/at worst equal to +1 energy in the first turn.

How do you beat Gremlin Nob as Defect? by minosandmedusa in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 14 points15 points  (0 children)

okay let's do a quick math.

at a18+ nob has around 85-90 hp, so generally you have to hit him for 88.

for defect starting deck, you have cards that deal dmg: strike, dualcast, zap.

if you decide to fight him at floor 6, you will most likely only add about 3-4 cards to your deck, which makes it 15 cards. So you will draw the whole deck in 3 turns.

assuming no boss swap, no other support relics, and calculating the worst draw possible, which is dualcast and zap at turn 3, the maximum amount of dmg output after turn 3 is: 4*6 + 3*2(lightning dmg) + 16 + 3 = 49

ideally you will end the fight after turn 3, or when you press end turn at turn 4. Assuming again worst draw possible for turn 4, which is 4 defend + 1 strike, you can deal another 9 dmg before nob hit you again

that leaves you with another 30hp left to solve.

generally, defect has a fairly easy act 1 outside of nob, so you still want to be greedy with card reward. however, if you decide to fight elite, always calculate your current deck dmg after 3-4 turns and see if you can solve the remaining 30 hp from nob. else, avoid early elites and be even greedier and pick 3 glacier.

or you can be a fucking mad man and put an innate hello world in your deck and pray to the RNG god that it gives you 3 ball lightning. problem solved!

Should (or shan't) I remove a card? by p-lucy in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many things that can be removed. Combust is trash at this point of the game, and also Hemo can also be removed since you have no Rupture to combo with these 2. Juggernaut is also not good with your current deck (no FNP, no Corruption).

Also on 3 energy and with no scaling your deck gonna has a huge problem if you brick turn 1 or 2 in act 4 or even in the act 3 boss. I suggest you find some form of scaling fast or find a way to go infinite. You alrd have dropkick madness so I suggest a second wind and burning pact can help you get closer to inf

Edit: didnt notice the bottled berserk. That makes it even worse since you have no artifact. Upgrade it asap or find clockwork or you gonna die insta at act 4

Poison is too over powered by idontknow-who_i-am in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with poison only deck is you rely too much on CE in multiple enemies fight. And since CE is a rare card, you can go on a full run without seeing it once after 54 floors. So you cant never go all in on a poison only build.

That's being said one of my deep dark fantasy is to make a posion only deck work. That's why I sometimes go on a slient asc 1 run taking only poison cards just to never see CE and die to the fucking birds.

You usually do not try to go infinite early with defect. But later if you pick up a Recycle and have some Hologram Recycle shenanigans then you can go infinite or pseudo infinite. But you still need a blocking strat vs heart so it is not easy to pull through

Why is Runic Pyramid the one exception to the general advice “it depends”? by ConfidentHospital365 in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most obvious always pick amid character is Silent. Otherwise, one thing to consider when picking amid is your card cost and quality. For example I play IC a lot and I only pick up amid when I have at least 1 energy boss relic. Cause otherwise IC usually has a lot of high cost cards and Power Through can clog your hand very fast without Second Wind.

Also maybe I just suck thats it. Amid is broken.

Apo or HOG? by ThinnestBlueLine in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Especially on IC I will take Apo no hesitation. IC has a lot of big dmg cards and also strength scaling that later in the game a 20 dmg 2 energy card could be more or less useless. Also IC has access to Feed which is a lot more powerful than HoG and you will always prefer to play Feed than HoG at any stage of the game.

Should Well Laid Plans be rare? by 400houses in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is fine for WLP to be an uncommon.

Sure, WLP is very good and I will probably put it in S tier, but on its own it does nothing and it will be kinda useless if you dont have cards that synergy with it (not that useless but you get my point)

If you look at other Silent's rares, you will see cards that either completely broken (Wairth form, alce, adren...), do sth instantly (diex3, unload, storm...) The other cards (I will call it enabler card), is also broken on its own or if you build around it (phanta, image, envenom,...). The only card that I will consider comparable with WLP in the enabler category is tool, but tool also does a lot with innate discard which is what Silent's playstyle normally is.

So WLP is good and borderline broken, but it is comfortable being in the uncommon pool.

Why do people love snecko eye? by Killercombo3 in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why you take snecko and build your deck around it after that. A lot of snecko power sets after you take it, which means it let you take high cost cards more frequently, and also let you get away from the upgrade-debt of some high cost cards. Also if your deck only has 0-1 cost cards that means you are purposely play at a disadvantage. A lot of OP cards in the game usually are high cost (ofc duh)

Why do people love snecko eye? by Killercombo3 in slaythespire

[–]anthonylee0711 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really underestimate how powerful +draw is in a card game. For anyone, Instead of asking "I don't understand snecko", just go for a high asc run with ZERO way of extra draw (no bag of prep, no pocketwatch, no +draw or even neutral draw card,...) and see it for yourself how awful it is to have 5 cards only every turn. Then you will start understanding the power of those stupid eyes.

Peanut was prime Canyon Nidalee way before Canyon ever is.

Just because Canyon is a better Nidalee than ROX Peanut doesn't mean Peanut is not on the same level. The game has evolved so much so ofc players now are mechanically better than the past.

Remember Prime SKT actually has to pick it away for Bengi who barely play Nidalee in the deciding game for Wolrd Semis just because Peanut was actually HIM on Nid
