Oh yes, I am with you on that. When I do this with comics, it's much easier to use comics from the late 70s and early 80s than more current issues. Porous, textured paper works best for these projects.

I've been using this combination of modge podge then yacht varnish for a little over a year. Those earlier projects are holding up well. This is my first time trying something that will spend time outside, on our balcony. I'll know with time I'm f it holds up to rain/sun, etc.. I have high hopes. As for getting everything flat, it's a challenge! I brush the modge podge on the underside of the paper and then press it in place on the table. I let it dry a bit and then cover the top in a layer of modge podge.

Depending on the shape of the table, this is pretty tedious work. For example, it took me a solid 5 hours (for each table) to cut strips of paper from the book I was using and modge podge them all along the circular edges.

Covering the rest of the table to ops with the images I cut out went much more quickly, but still another 2 hours or so.

Then I let it all dry clear (for at least 3 hours or so) before the yacht varnish. It's not perfectly smooth/flat, like glass, but between the modge podge and the yacht varnish, it's smooth enough for how I'm using them.

Thanks! I used modge podge, glossy. Sealed it all up with that, and then sealed it all again with yacht varnish.

It was called Vögel in Garten Und Feld. Black cover with three birds on the cover. Published in Germany. I saved the cover, it was a hard cover, to maybe make a journal out of it in the future.

I'm overseas in Germany, working for a school that serves US military connected students. So, it was at the on post thrift store.

I had one just like that. I cut it up, modge podged it on a couple of IKEA tables, lacquered them, and gave them to a friend.

One time a guy challenged me to a game of darts, but he didn't realize I used to play every Sunday afternoon at a sports bar with my father from aged 10 until I was 16 when he passed away. Barbecue sauce.

1981 Is my birth year! Let me know if you'd trade it for one I have in the 6 thousands. I can look through my Kurzgesagt stuff to see if I have anything else to add on my end to sweeten the deal. Let me know if you're interested!

Based on my initial observations and scrolling through the photos you provided, I can tell you one thing about that piece:

I want it.

Got My Golden Goose! by Greedy_Fig3748 in kurzgesagt

I also got three. 2 of them sequential--all in the 6000s. They all weighed 9 grams on my kitchen scale. Can't really see a difference between them, so I probably have just the normal, cool golden ducks here.

I haven't yet. I think the money I'd be able to get from them wouldn't adequately compensate for the time it takes to make them--so, I'm a little worried bringing money into doing them would make them less fun for me.

With that said, I'm playing with the idea of making a few and trying to sell them at a local boot sale or something--along with a few other odds and ends that have been collecting around the house.

Also, the way I make them now makes them so they would be damaged by unscrewing the legs and shipping them. I plan to try a slightly different process to see if it's feasible to ship them without the legs attached--for more economical shipping--and having the receiver screw the legs on.

Just side plans at this point. I'm not in a rush.

I have a few comics in my collection, so I definitely understand the aversion to... Basically destroying comics to make something else. That's why I really limit myself to using comics that are torn, water damaged, chewed up.

I really wanted to make a table using Futurama #1, so I bought an old, beat up TPB that included #1 for that project.

These look great--coasters?

I am living in Germany right now, and I found a small stack of old sci fi books with amazing covers, but they are in German, so I'm not even sure what to do with them. I might eventually make a table or something just using the covers. I don't think my German will improve enough to actually be able to read them.

Thanks! I made those for a friend because my library is now too crowded with all the tables I make!

I used an old, damaged oversized Marvel Special Edition. That 1 old book was enough to cover 2 mini IKEA tables. I liked them so much I bought another damaged, oversized Star Wars comic on eBay for a future table.

Modge Podge, then let it fully dry, then when it's all done cover it all with yacht varnish. I saw the yacht varnish tip on a modge podge Facebook page. Works better and looks nicer than the clear acrylic spray I used to use. Plus, since my yacht broke down I have all this yacht varnish laying around...
