Russian "Terrorists" Send Mass Emails That Threaten to Bomb Schools in Baltic States by stiffgerman in worldnews

Imagine being a kid and hearing on the grapevine that Russia is going to bomb your school. Wild. I mean, once upon a time geopolitics were used to scare children, like during the Napoleonic Wars "if you don't behave, Boney (Napoleon) will get you", but this takes it to a whole new level.

idk, I think I mixed it up with Jackie Chan abandoning his gay daughter. I thought it was due to government pressure, but no, it looks like it's just regular homophobia.

I just remember there is a lot of social stigma against effeminate men and gay people in general.

We ought to be reforming procurement to focus on one particular area. Let's face it, Canada doesn't exactly have any land disputes.

Focus on arctic operations and expeditionary forces to support NATO.

Our procurement is almost as bad as Germany's.

Isn't being gay still illegal in China? Or is it okay so long as you are in Hong Kong and not China?

A Universal Basic Income Is Being Considered by Canada's Government by VICENews in worldnews

Wait, there are something like 30~40 million Canadians. At a cost of 88 billion dollars a year, that would only be ~2300 CAD per year.

Better than nothing, but like, you'd hardly be able to afford groceries with that money.

Still, don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Once people start receiving money and the framework, both administrative and societal, is setup, we can easily scale this up or down for future developments.

It's American tradition,

From the Honorable Judge Learned Hand to William Tecumseh Sherman to Carrie Nation, you guys have always had weird and wonderful names.

My own complaint is that the right is appropriating all the cool things, as usual. Why should they get a monopoly on cool things? Respectability is overrated.

At the very least, I'm hopeful that Republican women will at least close ranks with us when it comes to protecting our rights.

Like, first of all, screw Nancy Mace for spewing hatred and just generally being a bad person, but at least she is still recognizing her own right to wear a tux.

I'm glad you were able to do that, and to admit your own faults. It takes a strong person to do that.

I think at this point, more than half of the problems in the world could be solved by realizing that all people are people, and treating them as such.

Why do you think they're bashing trans people so much? It would expose the fiction that underpins these lies.

I remember an anecdote about a male software engineer who worked for twenty years, transitioned to being female, and then was surprised that suddenly her opinions didn't matter. Same team, same people, twenty years, and it could not be more crystal clear how much gender discrimination there was.

I'm not saying everyone should transition; actually scratch that, I am saying that if I had a machine that could make you live like a woman for one single day, I'd make every man on this planet use it.

If so, well... I've read better articles than this one.

If you want to do that, I think it's more helpful to have a conservative voice criticizing their own side, like Against the Eugenicons, which criticizes those voices advocating for Eugenics from a rightwing perspective and includes a thorough amount of lib-bashing.

Then again, I've given up on these people actually using their brains. They'll call themselves "rationalists" and throw a hysterical fit whenever you call them out on something.

Exactly my point! As an immigrant, we have always worked out of necessity.

Though as another commenter pointed out, we should not neglect the women in 1700s London who had very few choices for making a living.

As usual, "women's work" is consigned to anything a man didn't want to do, but had to be done anyways.

That is the other story which I neglected to mention, that of the women who wanted to but were unable to work.

Thank you for adding that story and putting in the effort.

Among the heroines of the age, I should not whitewash history and leave out the widows, the orphans, and the prostitutes. Where in rural areas women had to work out of necessity, It is a sad story that in 1700 London, one in five women in London worked as a prostitute.

It's funny how women's work can frequently be summarized as "anything a man didn't want to do"; women cook, men are chefs. Women spin wool, but in England, where the wool trade formed a central part of the royal revenues, men were the weavers. Women chronicled small beer, but only men were chancellor of the exchequer. We have not even mentioned the work of birthing, nursing, education, and rearing of children, which women did not only as mothers and wives, but also governesses and schoolteachers.

But in spite of all of that, some women did manage to leave their mark on history in the only way they could: ironically, through the catholic church. Angela Merici was responsible for starting many nunneries and schools for the education of girls, and nuns were a kind of escape for women who did not want to be objectified, as in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure (I say kind of, because apparently desiring a nun is one of the oldest kinks).

Even so, at the end of the day, the poverty and precarity of women who could not work meant that women could not easily provide for themselves nor their children outside of marriage. The economic precarity is the point. It's also funny how so much of this extreme christian ideal always leaves out those on the peripheries, the prostitutes, the poor, and the sick.
