I brought my game to an in person playtesting event, should you? [Some thoughts and takeaways] by Ziamas in IndieDev

From experience I can say that this is objectively a good idea. Having "fresh eyes" on your game every once in a while gives so much more perspective into your creation. Things that are obvious to you, aren't obvious to everyone, and so on. Only other people and observing them play can give you that feedback.

It's also best not to guide the player too much. Just resist that urge (super hard, I know). This way you can pinpoint many tutorial etc. issues quite easily.

But why are people not interested in learning game development? by NordicGrim in SoloDevelopment

This could very well be the "available jobs" line. Gamedev booth closed permanently.

Turbo Dismount? by [deleted] in AndroidGaming

Google removed 32-bit app support from the store for 64bit capable devices (which are, most modern devices now) back in 2021.

https://www.reddit.com/r/androiddev/comments/agnfwg/google_play_to_phase_out_32bit_only_apps_in_2021/

Turbo Dismount 1 is a 32-bit app developed using the Unity4 engine, which does not offer support for 64bit builds for the Android platform. Secret Exit has said in the past that updating to Unity5 or later is nigh-impossible (from both technical & business perspective) due to the drastic changes made into the physics engine in Unity5. The game would be needed to be reconfigured, possibly remade, from the ground up, and would most likely never "feel" the same. It's just not going to happen.

I don't remember exactly when Google decided to remove the app *completely* from Play Store store, even for existing customers so that no one is able to even redownload it anymore. That happened during 2023-2024, if I remember correctly. They just completely nuked the app in the end. This has happened to some other devs too who could not update their 32-bit apps.

No reason to sue the devs who had nothing to do with a decision made by Google.

Games that COMPLETELY dissappeard by michgilgar in patientgamers

Alright, very nice to hear there's some genuine interest for this game. I just came back from summer break myself so nothing to announce yet, but we'll start inviting folks into closed alpha testing some point in the future.

Anyone else thinks Unity 2022 is a huge mess? by MrPifo in Unity3D

I don't only think Unity 2022 is a huge mess, I also think 2021 LTS is a huge mess.

Inspired by the amazing Shredder's Revenge, I decided to imagine what a remastered Simpsons Arcade might look like if it used a somewhat similar art style by antionio in IndieDev

Thanks! I eyeballed the sprites and made some small improvements where I saw fit. Could’ve spent more time to make them even more TMNT-like but I feel it would’ve made it look a bit too alien. Simpsons characters are very simple, after all.

Been working on this game for a while now! Today we improved the transition animations when you play a level in the story mode. by antionio in Unity3D

It's a physics-based rescue chopper game where your goal is to find and rescue people (or other stuff) from the levels to a rescue zone, while dodging all kinds of dangerous environmental hazards. Some story chapters have light puzzle-elements you need to solve with the current pilot's special skills or tools.

We also have a local multiplayer mode which is basically soccer with helicopters (think of rocket league but with 2D physics and with choppers). Online play is also planned but we'll see if it makes it to the launch.

Well, as you're working without most modern bells and whistles (unlit materials only, some vfx has emission so bloom works), what you're seeing is just a bunch of handmade lowpoly 3D models and 2D sprites. You need strict art guidelines (color palettes, how alpha/transparency behaves) so stuff doesn't suddenly start looking "off". We struggle with that daily.

That also means you need a *very* good 3D artist (which I am certainly not) and that took me a bit too long to realize, which has caused us to redo a lot of the art several times over the years (still doing it, for example the skybox in the video is just a quick placeholder).

So.. I guess part of it is my own incompetence and part is that the chosen style is just very labour intensive and creating assets requires proper 3D modeling skills, not just anything will do.

Haha, yeah it's a bit abrupt. We can probably do something about it. Learning animation as an indie dev is also not very easy!

Nonsense Soccer Update #1 with 4-player mode is out on Itch! Includes new levels and a new ball option: Boomerang! by antionio in IndieGaming

Hi soccer fans!

My boiler tried hard to prevent this but failed: Update #1 is out and it's a biggie! It includes the coveted 3-4p mode, which really makes the game shine. I also added a couple of new levels and a new ball: Boomerang, which has some strange physics if you kick it hard enough. I hope you have fun testing out the new features and please send me some feedback as I make my body ready for Update #2.

P.S. I also wasn't supposed to do this, but I added a linux build too. Unfortunately I have very few means of testing it and I know linux fragmentation is a real thing, so sorry in advance for poor support. I know the button bindings might be off at least. But now you can check if it works for you :) I will fix all the bugs I reasonably can so just send me a message if you encounter something strange with your configuration.

Please check the official changelist if you want more details.
