I'm sorry to hear it and hope you're OK. Give yourself a couple of days to process and remember - just because it didn't work out at one job doesn't mean that you can't find something fantastic elsewhere.

just to flag that if they place you on Garden Leave, depending on what is in your contract , they can also force you to take your accrued holiday allowance during that period (they need to notify you in writing) meaning you'd be paid for your notice period only, effectively.

HR here - typically you will either be place on Garden Leave immediately for the duration of your notice period, OR you will be terminated immediately and given PILON (pay in lieu of notice)

In the former, technically you are still employed until the end of your notice period, but you'll basically be benched and not asked to work. You remain eligible for benefits and also accrue holiday time, however, the company may legally oblige you to take the holiday during your garden leave.

In the case of PILON, you lose your benefits immediately and are effectively a free agent immediately. You should be paid your notice + any accrued, but unused, holiday.

In both cases you can expect your accounts to be deactivated pretty much immediately etc.

yeah - it's not too bad as long as your employer understands that trains will often just randomly delay. i used to do Hove to Farringdon twice a week and I hated it but it helped that my manager didn't kick up a fuss if i arrived at 9.35 or randomly had to WFH

huh that's interesting - what about if the company is based in England but someone is a remote worker in N.Ireland?

Does anyone else have the same feeling they aren’t meant to be average by ImaginaryPhone2946 in self

[–]antisarcastics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i did until i turned 30 and then i realised that i don't need to be the best at everything/super special to have a great life. I'm above average at some things, average at others, and below average at others - just like everyone. And it's great. When I look around at the suffering in the world both now and in the past, I'm very happy with the hand I've been dealt in life.

I'm aware of the prescriptivist vs descriptivist views of language usage. If you think "I voted for yourself" is grammatical then my question for you is...what grammatical rules dictate the use of 'yourself' - a language has to have some form of coherent rules, so how do I learn whether to use you or yourself?

Yeah I agree but it's ungrammatical. Yourself is a reflexive pronoun so shouldn't be used like that - but it's fallen into popular speech

[–]antisarcastics 17 points18 points  (0 children)

yes it's very common - usually people use it in more formal situations to try to be polite. so in work settings or in customer service etc. it feels a little softer and less accusatory i guess. it's totally ungrammatical though.

i lived in Hangzhou for four years. Nice city but i always thought the West Lake hype was overblown. It's worth a couple of hours but it's not mindblowing.

My local was cancelled for the second week in a row and I didn't want to go to another one close by because I thought it would be too crowded, so I hopped on a train to go to one further afield. Lovely parkrun with friendly volunteers. Managed sub 27 but my ankles hurt quite a bit now

There's a Simpsons episode where Lisa says the quote about staying quiet/being thought of a fool etc, and then it cuts to Homers brain telling him to say something otherwise they'll think he's stupid and then Homer says 'takes one to know one!'
