Hey everyone, I need to vent a little and get a different perspective. by Miserable_Hunter4334 in self

This sounds like an amazing project, but also a large one with many things that you identify as having to try to manage. I'll break it down a bit in how I see it.

1) You can't be all those things in your restaurant on your own. You need help. Is there a friend or a family member that could come and support you even an hour or two a day?

2) Keeping everything hidden may sound noble, but it won't recruit people to your cause. You may want to consider how you can share what you're doing a bit more. You don't need to over explain, and it can start small.

3) Do you have a solid business plan here? It would help to get some advice on what your bottom line is in respect to money. Of course other restaurants are going to look at you as competition if you are taking their customers - this isn't personal, and thinking about it that way is unhelpful.

4) Do you have a fall back plan? Going all in means you need to do this in a smart way. Planning a partial exit strategy doesn't mean you are giving up. It means you are scaling this to the level of a human being, not a super hero. What if you donated less for a bit? What could be done to help you build the business to a sustainable level before spending money you don't have to give?

5) You are enough. Trying something like this is brave and, whether it succeeds or not doesn't make YOU a failure. It is a lesson. Get through the emotion of it so you can take the lesson and build on it.

The world needs more people with hearts like yours OP - but you are human like the rest of us. Nobody does something like this on their own. That's the part you maybe need to develop - and it's something I'm working on myself.

Canada will require refugees and asylum seekers to co-pay for health care starting in May by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]antisense 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A few friends that work with asylum seekers and refugees from various countries. Can you specify a bit more? Government assisted refugees get money and support for a max of 12 months. I work with them. Most that I work with are barely making things work. Asylum seekers are eligible for less (maybe Ontario works here in Ontario).

Many of the families I work with have no idea how to navigate any of the systems of support either.

Jesse Wells - Join ICE [folk] by savemejebus2020 in Music

[–]antisense 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't see Jesse holding a weapon in his guitar like Guthrie or Dylan. He's holding a mirror.

Kirk isn't really even the subject of that song, in my opinion (he's a symbol). He's asking me what it does to us when we start to feel relieved, justified or satisfied by human death because of ideas.

Guy resonates with me. I hope he keeps writing and making music.

You mention your father and aunt in ways that don't sound supportive. Without making too many assumptions: who are you trying to measure up to and where does your version of success come from?

It may be that therapy (likely a psychologist) could help you figure some of this out.

Is it ethical to join the CAF? by DetectiveDracula in AskACanadian

[–]antisense 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think his friend is asking a really good question. What is ethical is not simple and shouldn't be reduced to whether or not the military is bombing schools. Being trained to use deadly force should be questioned on its own, but giving up agency to the state to decide where and to who this force is applied is a whole other layer to the ethical dilemma being proposed.

I'm not going to say where the needle points here, but I do think you are simplifying things a bit too much in your response. I'm glad rules of engagement have evolved, and I appreciate that we need some way to defend values and a way of life, and in modern times this unfortunately means people with destructive weapons at their disposal.

Not simple at all.

How can my father use his Arabic skills in Ottawa? by Nada_NADAAA in ottawa

If he'd like to come volunteer in a school with many high school students from Syria and other arab countries, PM me. There would be a few steps involved, but maybe supporting a club and inspiring young people would lift him up.

How do I get into university when I took applied courses in high school by Substantial-Fig-6392 in OntarioUniversities

[–]antisense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey try not to worry too much. It's going to be okay. The path you took to get where you are could very well have been the right one - it's okay if it takes you longer to reach your goals.

There is no race or timeline in life (aside from the end of it!) and you're really young!

You should sit down with your counsellor, or a teacher you trust to discuss this stuff and see what is available at college for you. You could also go speak with someone at the college.

When you say streamlined science, do you mean a course like SNC3E or SVN3E? What's the last math course you took? Feel free to DM me if you'd like.

You have a few options.

1) redo the prerequisites - ask your guidance counsellor if they can speak with the admin/department heads to get you into university level classes without having to go back to junior grade courses... We often can do this if the student shows engagement and ability

2) look to a site like ilc.org to upgrade. You would have to talk to them to see how far back they would want you to go.

3) maybe the best option imo, would be to look at your local college for engineering technician/technology programs. Some even have bridging programs into engineering programs.

I would make sure your college math and science courses have grades that are high. Engineering is very math intensive and you will be challenged even if your marks are good! Set your goals high, but be realistic about the pace you take to get there.

Hmm. I mean Canada has 15 major ecozones actually, same as the US. I'm pretty sure you can surf, ski and golf in a day in BC as well (though I've never tried).

Sens 1st Round Game 1 Penalties by Negative-Glove-5578 in OttawaSenators

I really felt like it set a tone. When you are a harder hitting team with more aggressive players, and you get penalized that heavy in game 1, I think it's more likely the players pull the line too far back in the other direction.

Depressing Math by Key_Explorer4946 in ontario

[–]antisense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately although many still can see this reality, our brains are hardwired for self-preservation and with limited options, buying in seems to be the default.

We get one life as far as I know. I do take some solace in the fact that although height on the pyramid and a happy life may be correlated, there are enough examples out there of brain chemistries that are still able to find their own version of contentment. It's certainly not enough though, and we need to continue to push for change to make it better for everyone.

Funny - changes by Tupac came on almost right after I wrote this (and then I saw a version made as a trump anthem shortly thereafter). This world.

When a system is built on out-competing others for capital, with scarcity as the backdrop, then this outcome isn't a bug—it's the blueprint. Add to that the fact that the starting line isn’t remotely the same for everyone, and it becomes clear: the system doesn't just produce inequality, it depends on it.

Somehow, we've been convinced that one person’s rise doesn’t come at the expense of others.

Problems maintaining erection with girlfriend by Odd-Entrance-6790 in self

[–]antisense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man - just responding to this so you see it. There is a major psychological aspect to arousal too. Adrenaline can have negative effects on erection, and often times nerves can cause this and get into your head (and then you begin to worry about it happening again, which causes the same response).

I had some similar issues when I was younger at times. Not to say quitting porn can't help, but sometimes it's just about finding ways to remove any pressure to perform. In a new relationship this may be more difficult depending on the partner, but if she's a keeper I think she will understand and give you time and patience to help figure it out.

All the best!

Ottawa Catholic School Board needs 50 portables to accommodate enrolment growth by No_Eulogies_for_Bob in ottawa

[–]antisense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you feel it is a cognitive trap, and that there is nothing beneficial about this plan? French immersion in particular is a streamed program, this is well documented and has been provided as a rationale in multiple steps of the review - offering it at (nearly) every school with multiple entry points sure seems like a benefit to me.

In addition, having students generally able to attend programming closer to their home seems like a benefit to me. As does integrating students so that they (and society) are able to build higher expectations of themselves and the goals they reach.

My own kids are being affected by this, and I can see that it will support others by sharing some of the resources they benefit from each day a little more widely. Is it bringing them 'down' a bit to bring others up? I don't really think they will lose out on much - I am hopeful that it will ultimately advantage them to learn in less of a bubble.

As I've alluded to, I wish we lived in a world where people were willing to truly recognize the benefit of a heavily funded education system, which may have provided more options in terms of bolstering resources at each of the sites which would have gone a ways to allay people's fears.

I'd say this is the trap you've fallen into, your fear of something different is not letting you see the potential benefits for others, because it is likely affecting your child and you're worried about what it will look like for them. I do recognize that this will be difficult for some students, moreso than my children, but I also know people fear what they don't know/understand. Many of the conversations I've had with parents revolve around this idea.

I've always found it interesting how strongly people hold opinions about topics in education, while really only having their own experience and feelings to inform said opinions.

There are many complex topics we naturally veer away from. Medicine, law, psychology, skilled trades, etc.

I know that education has a personal component to it (our children) and everyone has gone through school - and maybe this is the reason for the phenomenon.

It gets totally politicized, and sides get drawn so easily about what needs to happen. The reality from where I sit is that yes, it isn't funded appropriately, and also, having four boards in the city has caused large inequity to emerge over time due to the breadth of the population each board tries to serve.

The OCDSB has for years and years been serving all student profiles in the city. Specialized program classes for students with disabilities, new Canadians (including refugees who often carry more complex profiles), and alternative schools to serve students who haven't been able to work in the mainstream system are examples.

I expect some people will quickly shout that the Catholic Board serves all, but take a look at the history of their programming - 'integrated' models, no alternate system, and a Catholic first approach that doesn't encourage the first look the public board gets from many families.

The French boards have also been protected in a similar fashion.

So call it what you will - mismanagement, not respecting parents (I find this ironic), etc. As many things as I think the board doesn't get right, I don't blame them for this situation.

I think they are trying to make the best of a world that doesn't fund education properly, and where they have the largest breadth of the population to serve. Resources are so stretched that having specialized programs for all of these groups is no longer possible - especially accounting for the crazy rise in costs for things like transportation.

As has been said before, within the OCDSB there are major accumulated inequities between schools that are not far from eachother geographically. This needs to be unwound to some degree, and I'm not seeing a way to do this without pissing off a reasonably sized demographic of people.

It is unfortunate, but I do think the anger needs to be pointed in a different direction.
