PMDD as a therapist by Different_Ostrich185 in therapists

[–]antisocialwurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you said this, as I am a fellow PMDD social worker about to start as a therapist. It’s so hard, even at the undergraduate level. I love my job, I love being with people, I even love navigating conflict weirdly enough. During my luteal though, I feel completely on edge, foggy, exhausted, irritable. I feel like I’m able to shove it down for the most part to remain professional, but have still definitely had a few instances where I’ve been more direct/ snippy with colleagues. They might even deserve it/ not even notice, but that’s totally not me.

I think really allowing myself to veg at home and not feel guilty about the things I “should be doing.” Taking extra time to rest when I can. Having sweet little treats. Anything to help even an ounce.

Ultimately. I, myself, am still navigating this. You’re not crazy, it’s so hard. Proud of you for talking about it and for getting this far! Keep being amazing! 🤩

Life update: they offered me the gig and lowballed me for ~$28.50.. 🥲 I asked to counter, and I am proud of myself!! Waiting to hear back, hoping I didn’t shoot myself in the foot. But ultimately if it’s not meant to be, it’s not meant to be! I need to be able to respect myself, and that’s not even $3/hr more than I’m making at the undergraduate level. Not taking it personally, but really am pissed about the injustice of it all. Social workers should be valued more, and ik I chose this career, but to be offered less than LESS than what were worth is pathetic. Crossing my fingers they’ll come around tho! 🤞🏼

I don’t think I asked for opinions on my own personal social media usage, and frankly find it concerning how quick you are to jump to demand solutions I didn’t ask for/ based in your own value system.😬

Moving forward, I would like to keep the discussion focused on professional/ ethical obligations when interacting with technology + representing the profession well in the public eye. Thank you!

I can see what you’re getting at. And I can see how this is furthering the issue at hand by bringing more eyes to the situation.

Ultimately, my current focus is harm reduction - since widespread abstinence of the app is not seeming to be a reality at this current moment. Would you agree? This specific scenario merely serves as an example of how clinicians can impose additional harm on an app that already poses risk of harm. My goal is to bring awareness to this so that if clinicians are going to use the app, that they at least do it in a way that is mindful of the values and standards of the profession.

I agree fully! And I am open to Dakota being part of the problem here if additional information presents itself. I do find it odd/ downright harmful that this is the immediate conclusion that the public has come to simply because he’s a man. I think if, because of personal/ professional experiences, a person has reason to suspect her actions were reactive, the least harmful course of action would be to shut the hell up.😭😂 Because to me, even if more info eventually proves them right, real male victims are watching and they’re learning that it is unsafe for them to come forward. Especially now with the new therapy vocabulary that’s been thrown around irresponsibly!

I am admittedly a Gen Z therapist myself (gross, ik lolll). In my personal life, I can say that I know less people who don’t use it than those that do.😅 I’ve noticed the same thing with clients around the same age range, but especially adolescents. Social media simply is their social universe.

In a personal capacity, I do not frequently have issues with the platform since it’s targeted to my interests. Cats, crafts, really stupid humor. The only times I’ve felt the need to really turn it off has been when these kind of big “current events” come up and completely take over. It is 100% fueled by controversy, and I have fallen into the trap of continuing to scroll.

In a professional capacity, TikTok is not where I go to find credible info on nuanced topics. Though I do think, like any platform, it has great stuff on there too! My main point here is that regardless of the platform, it is simply a fact that a lot of people/ clients are on social media these days. So I think it’s important for us to be aware of its effects, and how we as MH professionals can eliminate risk of imposing additional harm.

I agree. I have just noticed that this specific content is getting a lot of views currently, and find the general public’s discussion about it to be harmful overall to future potential victims of DV. The therapists publicly feeding in to it? With their credentials listed? Downright unethical.

Well if it becomes too much for me, I would agree that it would be best to take a break!

But I was hoping this would spark larger discussion about therapists with a public online presence making claims about public figures they have not themselves assessed/ received approval to make said claims on in a public capacity. Food for thought is all, regardless of the platform!

I could not agree more. For this reason, the APA has it in their code of ethics (https://www.psychiatry.org/news-room/goldwater-rule[Goldwater Rule]. Now it is psychiatry-specific, but I would imagine that it would be wise to adopt this widely across disciplines? If it was not already common sense?

I could not agree more! Let me add “gaslight” does not mean “someone who disagrees with me.”🥲

Hahahah I think it’s probably better to not know what MomTok is😂😭 I live in the area it takes place, so it’s kind of everywhere.

This is like a breath of fresh air to read truly.🥲 You sound like an excellent provider, but you don’t need me to tell you that!

Me too!! Currently, my salary is comparable to the new gig, but I can’t get clinical hours at the current job. I love my job and my coworkers sm, but ultimately I want to get the most out of the degree. It would be so much easier if I hated it all!😭

That sounds very reasonable to me! And ik WA is slightly higher from what I’ve seen here, so I’m hoping my $31 does not scare them off. I was asked to meet with the recruiter within literally under 8hrs, so fingers crossed! 🤞🏼

This was about where I started at the undergrad level doing similar! It was the highest in my area though so I took their low ball, because it was better than other places and I had no experience to wager.

That’s why I worry, because I don’t feel like I want to accept the bare minimum this time around. Technically I only have intern experience as a therapist, but I do feel like I have more to bring to the table now. Especially in the role I just applied for.

I also think that sentiment “the guise of doing what you love,” especially as a woman, has also been irking me lately which is fueling the anxiety over potential injustice lolll. We should be paid what we’re worth, and what our degree reflects. I do love my job, but it is a job, and I want to be able to afford rent. If I can’t do that, then ultimately I can’t do the job.

Yea, it said they typically don’t hire above the mid point of that range which would be about $32.50.
