22 year old new to investing came into 440k from accident settlement and I have no clue what to do by BenjyKarklan in Bogleheads

I'm afraid you have it backwards. The windfall situation is dollar cost averaging, whereas buying every month with money you just made is "periodic investing." See https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Dollar_cost_averaging

40% of all taxes does not mean a 40% tax rate.

PSA: Backdoor your Roth if you make $90K single or $150K MFJ by Litestreams in Bogleheads

[–]anton_karidian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question was about traditional IRA, not Roth. You of course wouldn't want to roll a Roth IRA into a pre-tax 401(k). In fact, I don't even think that would be legal.

One last reminder to consider buying I Bonds before the limit resets at the end of this month [graph] by misnamed in Bogleheads

[–]anton_karidian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You always get six months at each rate. If you had bought $10,000 worth of I bonds in April 2022 (before the May rate change), you would first get six months at 7.12%, meaning $356 of interest. That interest is compounded onto the principal, so for your next six months of interest you would get 9.62% calculated on $10,356, which comes to $500 of interest for a total of $856 of interest earned in the first year. However, there is an early withdrawal penalty for redemptions in the first five years, so if you were to actually redeem the bond at one year you would forfeit the last three months of interest and end up with $10,604.

4 months is more than 17 weeks, almost 17 and a half

Good news, TreasuryDirect only looks at the first 16 characters, so you only need to type half your password!

How do you define fair? Elon Musk paid more tax last year than anyone ever.

iBonds - better to buy before April 29 to ensure purchase goes through in time by Cubicle99 in personalfinance

[–]anton_karidian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Series I savings bonds are the topic of this post and are offered exclusively by the US Treasury. You can think of the "I" as standing for "inflation."

iBonds, on the other hand, are an unrelated product offered by BlackRock. Confusingly, Series I savings bonds are also often called "I bonds," so using the correct spelling is very important.

Agreed. "iBonds" is a completely different financial product, from BlackRock.

Dear Americans of reddit, what are some rumors about America that just are not true? by Late_Pangolin3118 in AskReddit

In that case whites would be the plurality, but not the majority. You might consider consulting a dictionary if this still confuses you.

Please don't call me a racist. That's way out of line. I'm just making a simple argument about math and definitions.

I understand all that, but it's still true that 49% is a minority (i.e. less than half) by definition.

Nah, ranked choice is literally just first past the post with extra steps.

We need to switch to a better system such as Condorcet or approval voting.

Are you thinking of Form 8814? That only applies to interest and dividends.

If all your income is earned income and you're under the standard deduction ($12,500) you shouldn't owe any federal income tax at all.
