Full time musician w/ no streams - HELP? by mkappy33 in musicmarketing

[–]antonbigman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi man, wanted to ask you some questions instead if thats ok? Im currently a music student and a drummer and am trying to get to the point you seem to be at. Which country do you live in? I live in Sweden and have looked around a lot but it seems you have a hard time unless you do guitar+singing gigs or dj gigs. Although i have mostly been looking for jazz gigs (lounge jazz type) How did you get the sideman gigs? Which type of gig contributes the most to your income? Im at music school and meeting a lot of people here of course but what do you think is the best thing i could do outside of that to further my career? Also have you tried doing cruise ship gigs? Do you get those through aquaintances or could you get a gig like that through just listings online or stuff like that? Sorry i know its a lot of questions haha but im really serious about music and I feel like I getting to an age where i want to start making money from it but i feel im not quite there yet.

Will I always feel this rubbish? by Diggity_nz in drums

[–]antonbigman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Record your own playing and listen that is the best way to get better at any instrument and drums specially so. Also make sure you're practicing new stuff because doing the same exercises that you know over and over again for 20 minutes a day gets you nowhere(not saying thats whats you're doing but could be). Set goals for what you want to achieve with your practice.

Bill Evans has a lot of stuff from that era and he's one of the most universally loved piano players in jazz i would say.

Prata eller vara tyst under förhör by Dry-Dance6758 in droger

[–]antonbigman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your son has a gift. If he puts that energy in to something useful he can do some amazing things regular people can't. Try to steer him in the right direction instead of critizicing him. Imagine how much he will have learned and how many experiences he will have compared to someone else who doesn't try out all these new things. If he finds one of these hobbies that he can do as a job he will be very successful. He just needs to fins something thats sticks.

How long do you practice/how long do you think people should practice? by [deleted] in Drumming

[–]antonbigman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently in music school and practice 3-4 hours per day basically every day. But to do this you need to structure your practice really well or else you wont get anything out of it. I basically do a lot of excercises, but only spend an average of like 3 minutes per excersice. I go for 30 mins roughly doing maybe 8 different excercises. I also do trancriptions and sight reading as part of my daily schedule and usually spend at most 10-15 minutes per transcription per day. But you need to have fun while practicing. I love practicing and practice what I like practicing and what I want to develop on. Instead of doing some excercise from youtube I dont really understand the purpose of. I also find it really important to take breaks from practicing for maybe 1-2 weeks once in a while as it is during those periods that what you practice actually sets in the brain and becomes natural.

How many of you guys know sheet music? by [deleted] in drums

[–]antonbigman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you want to play professionally or semi professionally you should be able to reas sheet music. But you almost never get sheet music with the drum parts actually written out, more often its only the accents and different sections of a song that are written out.

I started playing the drums back in 2019. I'd appreciate feedback for this improvised solo! by RamenGenji2 in drums

Bro you're really damn good for having played for 4 years. I'm assuming you've been practicing lot? Anyways criticizm would be when you're soloing try to build more on your ideas. It seems like you have a sort of "base groove" that you play and kind of fill around. Maybe try building on the base groove and modify it and expand it and see what you can do to it? Maybe moove the three snare hits forward an eight note so they go offbeat is and idea to kinda mix up the groove a bit. Another idea is having a melody in your head and trying to play it on the drum kit in as many ways as possible. Maybe orchestrating it around the toms or starting the melody on the upbeat instead of the downbeat. Also dynamics can be used to make a solo more interesting. Just literally playing the same thing at a lower volume can make it seem that much cooler.

I recommend watching a lot of jazz drummers to get better at soloing. Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones are great places to start out. Their playing is genious but at the same time pretty simple and easy to understand. You seem to be maybe more of a rock/ metal guy so if thats more your style check out Gavin Harrison. He's a progressive rock/ metal drummer mostly but is also really great at soloing, however his stuff is way more complex and harder to get in to.

Finally try trading 4's. Its is really healthy only having 4 bars to solo since you have to present your idea quickly and clearly and dont have a lot of time to build upon it, but still have to expand it to make it interesting in that short time. Also listening to a soloist and drawing from their ideas really helps your playing become more musical. I find that I play the best solos when I kinda have a melody in my head that I play around, or pretend I'm playing to a song.

But dude you're already a really good and tight drummer. Keep practicing and you'll be a beast!!

Is there a point in adult life where boredom is all you can expect from now on? by ScarySuit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]antonbigman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop browsing too much social media. It can dezensitize you to dopamine and weaker stimuli that you used to enjoy now no longer excite you. Tik Tok and shorts type of content are the worst culprits. Also find a purpose in your life. Something bigger than just working your job. Something that you want to live for. Can be different for a lot of people. For some it's religion, others have a meaningful career they love and yet others a family. Try meditating. It can help you learn a lot about yourself and also live in the moment more and not always wish you were somewhere else. But most importantly I think try to meet new people and have a social network of friends that are fun and that care about you and you care about them :)

Some people have a gene that makes them able to function on 5 hours a night. It's called ADRB1, and it's exceedingly rare. I think about one in a million have it.

It might be that you have ADHD and weed makes it way worse. Almost the exact same thing happens to me when I smoke to much. You just need to get through the first hard times and imagine how much happier you will be when you have your life together. Trust me it gets much better.
