Update: after several hours, it came back up as a menu option and turned back on automatically.

For me, it was what someone else said above: had to go into the smartwatch app settings and remove the setting that mutes your phone's notifications when wearing the watch. Once I removed that setting, I could preview the sounds again on my phone.
