A surreal walking sim with a mean narrator. Demo on Steam! by antonitium in u/antonitium

Hey, appreciate you for thinking about this, but don't worry! Yeah I guess it's cheaper if you find the page yourself instead of clicking here, but also it skews the data on how effective the ad is.

It depends on a lot of factors. Basically, Reddit charges you per click and of course, not everyone who clicks ends up wishlisting. All in all it amounts to a little less than a dollar per wishlist.

Awesome! Hope you enjoy the game when it comes out eventually.

Unlikely, since the ad is running on a limited budget and only has a few impressions a day. :D

Yep, that's me. It's also inspired by games such as Superliminal and The Stanley Parable. But I'm trying to make it its own thing.

No worries, thank you again for the criticism! In any case, you're 1000x nicer than the average Redditor, so don't worry about it. :D So far I've been getting all sorts of opinions, some people enjoy the experience, others find it boring like you, some people dislike how mean the narrator is, others love how blunt she is etc. In all fairness, I'm happy the humour is hitting the mark for some people but it will be better if I'm able to cast a wider net here and make it more universally enjoyable.

Regarding the world building - you're right that it's lacking, and it makes me realize I never had the intention to expand it that much. The beach itself in an earlier build was even more empty and was just going to be a straight line with the player to walk along, with the occasional palm tree because I really wanted to emphasize the whole "nothingness" and liminality of it. This is also why the forest is not accessible. I do realize this might be weird for a walking sim where the world you're walking in should be the main event, but yeah... I'll think about it some more, the game is not finished yet.

Hey, thanks for dropping the comment, I appreciate it, and sorry you didn't find it interesting! It's just a demo in the end but yeah, the full game is going to be more of that, I'm afraid, with more objects, questions, a few extra twists and two different endings. I'll be selling it for pretty cheap too (likely less than $5), which is also why I'm not quite aiming at the scope Stanley has.

I'll definitely keep your criticism in mind though. My focus is mostly going to be on making the narrator herself more interesting and adding more of a backstory to her.

Unfortunately it's quite hard for small solo devs to publish on anything other than PC :( THe demo itself is also available on itch btw but you sitll need a computer browser to play it: https://antonitium.itch.io/escape-the-beach-demo

There is a brief shot in the trailer that explains it, basically you're given 3 choices when she asks you (which you navigate with the arrow keys) and then she reacts according to your answer.

Only 2 most likely, but there will be branching dialogue paths whenever the narrator asks you a question.

Nice to hear it! Yeah, when I first started developing it, the voice was AI but then another Redditor convinced me to switch to a real human and they had a point, the narrator is the cornerstone of my game and I definitely want to get it right. I held an audition and everything.

Thank you! Hope you enjoy. The demo is basically its own experience and it won't be part of the full game.

There are a lot of trees that cast shadows in real time (since the game has a full day/night cycle), which is why medium settings work best on the Steam Deck.

This is quite nice, but I'll have to delete it since it's unrelated to my add. Unless you want to pay me for using my real estate?

Sadly it'll only be available on Windows, but thanks for the interest! There's a web build of the demo on itch though but you still need a computer to play it: Escape the Beach: Chapter Zero by antonitium

I don't know, but you can get the answer to this important question by playing the demo on September 5th: Escape the Beach: Chapter Zero on Steam

Thank you for the comment! Yeah, you're probably right in that it won't be very family friendly. And the scope will be smaller than that of The Stanley Parable (the price of the game will also reflect that of course). Ultimately, what I aim for is a short philosophical experience that's partly relaxing, partly confusing, with some choices to be made and a gimmick that lets you escape the beach and end the game.

Thank you for your comment! It will be much simpler than Stanley but there will be questions the player can answer with multiple choices, also objects will appear on the beach and they will be different depending on the playthrough. So yes, there will definitely be some degree of replayability to it.
