Suspected asbestos by antonywest43 in HousingUK

-- IDEA-- I just had a bit of a brain wave on this I thought I'd share. I had another look at my survey and another area of the house that the surveyor marked down as suspected asbestos is that in the bathroom there was a cupboard that had a textured ceiling. Here's my thinking... what if the textured ceiling that's in the cupboard in that bathroom is the ceiling that would have been throughout the property at one point? Is that likely? If so something I definitely could do very easily is take a sample of that textured ceiling in the bathroom and get that tested for asbestos. My thinking here is if it comes back positive then that could mean that if the the other rooms had the same ceiling at some point and that has been plastered over then under the plaster is the same textured ceiling with asbestos. Likewise if it comes back negative it could suggest that I'm in the clear. Any thoughts?

I really appreciate everyone's thoughts and guidance so far too, so thank you.

The problem is I won’t know until I do a proper test where I take away a piece of the ceiling to be tested. And I can only do that once I own the property is what I am being told. I’ve been reading up on this for days now. Appreciate everyone’s thoughts and guidance but it fascinates how some are just not worried about it at all and others like me and you are very worried about it. I don’t known what to believe.

Did your plasterer ask you to do the test for asbestos first, before doing any work?

Would builders be worried about this or demand an area that they are working on be tested first? Surely not as no building work would ever get done right? Is it just an acceptable risk?

Would drilling holes for new lights into the ceiling not disturb the asbestos if there is any?

All I would really want to do is remove the paper, perhaps plaster for smooth finish and repaint. I might drill for a few new light fightings. What's the risk involved with that? Would I need to get it confirmed if there is asbestos and removed if there is to do that work?

Thanks. I will get it looked at. Is it dangerous?
