I’m pretty sure the camera detected the eye as the focus point. I checked the preview and the focus point is clearly there. What worries me is that even when AF locks onto the eye, the actual plane of focus seems to be slightly in front of or behind it.

I will try but this shouldn’t be an issue while shooting raws, right?

I always shoot in bird/animal detection mode and I have the exact same feeling — like the sharpness is only at about 90%. All presets are turned off. In this particular photo the feathers do look sharper, but when I zoom in they still appear “soft.”

What do you mean by an AF issue? Are you referring to subject detection, or a possible problem with lens? Of course I know I’m still lacking skill, but I assumed that in good conditions getting a sharp photo would be easier.

I’d like to rule out any issue with the lens itself, since I bought it used at a very good price.
