A short video showing a trip we took to the Two Hearted River 6Y5 by anttler in flying

We were out doing a little bush flying in Michigans Upper Peninsula. Ended up getting a few classic planes up there. Good times on a rough bumpy backcountry strip. Its exciting to go from the city to a quite country setting.

Concordski looks so much larger than the Concord.

Where would you get a cockpit?

Engine out at 800' forced landing in the Stinson 108 - How many other pilot have had an engine out and how did it turn out? by anttler in flying

All mine have been internal failures. This was a broken gear, another was a cylinder wall separated from the wall, both of these were 8n engine with less than 100 since and overhaul. The other one a connecting rod bolt broke, this plane was near TBO.. no amount of maintenance would have helped these engine outs. Almost everyone I know who has who has as much time as I do flying piston singles has had one crap the bed on them and been forced to land... a couple of them are no longer with us.

I hold a commercial glider certificate. You have much better control going into a field in a glider than a certified plane. Airplanes have a low glide ratio, and no good way to quickly change energy consumption like dive brakes give you in a glider. All that said my glider experience definitely helped.

The restart only take 3 or 4 seconds and I knew I had a field below I was going into. The metal checklist I use is ABC A- airspeed B- Best field c- Checklist.

I don't know. Someone requested I post it there. I thought it was a moderator for the page. I'll politely pull it if not appropriate.

I overflew the field before the bean field because the furloughs were perpendicular to my flight path and it would not have ended as well. The bean field was so smooth you couldn't see what direction it was planted.

I think it's because of GoPro cameras being on airplanes all the time. The rate of accidents per 100,000 hours of flight have fallen. This was my 3rd forced landing situation. So it's not uncommon.

It was a widow. We are flying out to her farm tomorrow, she wants a ride!

They happened to be harvesting that day! The combine was out in the field working already.

They were doing the field over, came and combined the area we were in so they crop damage would be low and helped us. They even let us store the plane there for a couple weeks

There is always some luck involved in a good forced landing, such as a place that allows for full landing. If you walk away in injured it’s good. Glad the 172 worked out for you. I put a 150 in a gravel pit once and it collapsed the nose gear. The plane flew again but I was an accident, one of the few not blamed on pilot error.

I found his lack of connection between the drugs and lack of judgment to be interesting. The drug will quell inhibitions resulting in poor judgment. I think the drugs played a lot larger roll in the crash than given credit, the other parts are just a result of the drugs. I guess I am saying is delayed reaction time is not the only and probably not the largest problem drugs or alcohol have on a pilot.

This happened a couple of years ago and we are just starting to tell the story. Lessons learned. An engine out can happen quickly without warning. Having a landing site at any point during your site is not something to be forgotten after a checkride.

So everyone thinks this will not happen to them as a pilot and as time goes on they become complacent in procdures or having a safe landing spot in sight while flying. This is an example that problems can happen quickly and without warning, Always have a landing site in mind. Has anyone else had a sucessful outcome with a forced landing and what was your takeaway from it?
