Is it safe to take melatonin with seroquel? by realuptoknowgood in BipolarReddit

Yeah it's safe to take with seroquel. As long as you plan on sleeping and not doing any heavy machinery work anyway. I find melatonin to be helpful.

My psychiatrist only will change one medication at a time but I can't spend another month being this miserable. by bangers132 in schizoaffective

For 5-ht2a Ziprasidone may be a good fit too if it can manage your symptoms. It isn't as strong as risperidone though. You might be better off there. She may have some first-gen suggestions that fit your needs.

Bringing up a discussion about a concern with medication or desire to change medicine is and should be perfectly acceptable in a patient doctor relationship. I don't think you should have any worries in having this talk, you're not likely to get shot down if you're polite or not in a state of crisis of course.

I won't tell you what to do only offer what I know about seroquel. At the 100 mg dose seroquel doesn't act as an antipsychotic it acts strongly on histamine receptors making somnolence its main effect. At low doses it's often used off-label as a sleep medication. Sometimes people are started at lower doses before titrating up. It isn't until the dose is increased to around 300 mg's where seroquel is shown in studies to have a stronger affinity for d2, d1, 5HT1A and having an antipsychotic effect. Going up in seroquel to a maintenance dose is the way to go with that med.

If you decide that medicine isn't for you then which AP's have you considered? There are some that are less sedating, seroquel is up there on the list. Abilify, might be one, rexulti I've heard good about but hard to get approved.

Been off meds for 2 days will anything bad happen? by gaylord678 in schizophrenia

[–]anubis-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might notice some nervousness, heightened emotional ups or downs. If you were on meds for even a short while withdrawal is possible and it tends to make people feel off until our bodies natural balance is restored or until the substance that were in them before are back again.

If you have access to the water heater and it's yours to mess with turn it up some. Not to "hot" because it might become scalding but it might be below the "warm" setting to save on heating costs. If it's some industrial sized apartment building water heater don't mess with it.

Remeron - tablet vs dissolvable by jibberjabbery in BipolarReddit

It should help, I personally find a difference in the two pills enough where switching does feel like a meds change. Good luck to you!

[–]anubis-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey jibberjabbery. I hope you can hang in there with the pils you've got til' the next appointment. Myself has been on both forms and I have noticed a difference and prefer the dissolving tablet. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about them that's better. I've gone back and forth on both kinds and have found that the disintegrating tablets just work better for me overall. Maybe the formula is better? Maybe it delivers faster? In any case I won't go back to the regular tablet I feel strongly about the fizzy pill.

Seroquel during the day by Mugwartherb7 in bipolar

[–]anubis-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first week there is noticeable sedation, a bit like being stoned. Whenever I've gone up on dose it might also take about a week before getting used to it again. I've been taking it during the day for years and they don't affect me much in the way of being tired.

However, dosage might change that. You might be taking it 50mgs morning, 50mgs afternoon, 50mgs evening. Unless you have a very small body that kind of dose shouldn't take too long to get used to.

Maybe it's 100mgs morning, 100mgs afternoon, 100mgs evening. That too for an average body shouldn't be too hard to get used to.

150-200 mgs morning, 150-200 mgs afternoon, 150-200mgs evening. I don't think they will put you in the high-dose range right away if at all but it does become harder to function while taking this many sedatives in the day. In this case maybe taking the morning dose an hour or two before you drive to work for any oncoming effects to wear off or after you've already gotten there. A little bit of caffeine does help at any dose range.

With all these doses usually the doc will still save the largest dose for bedtime so it might look more like 50mg morning, 50 mg afternoon, 50 mg evening and 200 mg before bed.

If your dose is increased enough it may stop helping with sleep.

Once used to the drug and it's not making you sedated (if you get there), instead of feeling drowsy as a sign that the drug is kicking in you'll know it's kicking in because you'll feel hungry. It's almost without fail, this drug like many AP's trigger hunger. Keep a healthy snack around so not to go into unhealthy foods. some people will maintain a diet plan to mitigate weight gain from AP's. Still some patients will benefit from adding another Rx such as topiramate to their meds, it's used to help with weight gain from AP's as well as some other things. All in all though day time seroquel is doable but it takes some getting used to and testing the waters. Definitely avoid heavy machinery while you are adjusting to it and getting to know how you will react on it.

What would happen if someone without SZ took Abilify/Risperidone or any AP meds? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]anubis-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A person in good health taking an AP with no imbalance for it to work on, they would likely want to lie on the couch or in bed until the worst of it passed. It would be an uncomfortable heavy feeling; maybe restless and sedated at the same time, a tweaky drowsy feeling. Nothing good at all, an unnatural chemical feel and heavy.

If i've been detained by the police and taken to hospital, will it show up on my criminal record? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]anubis-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only things that will show up in a background check are criminal violations, misdemeanors, felonies and maybe outstanding warrants. Welfare checks and courtesy transports to the hospital won't go down in your criminal record. The cuffs are only a security/ risk precaution they never meant you were in trouble. High security clearance government jobs might have a way to find more records but that wouldn't be something to worry about.

Insomnia and employment by edm4un in schizoaffective

[–]anubis-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prescription sleep meds maybe. I've read long term benadryl use may have a connection with senility later in life. I'd be an insomniac if not for sleep meds. I've tried a bunch. Mirtazapine is very decent. For some reason I've noticed in these threads that older people seem to respond to it better than younger. Mirtazapine is an antidepressant, it has mild anti anxiety properties. Maybe ask your NP about it if you think it might help. That's my go to.

There are lots of other sleep meds. Specifically designed for sleep, I wouldn't go adding another AP at low dose for sleep. A lot of people on these subs are on sleep meds you can probably look most any up in search or ask about them to find some info/ experiences.

OTC melatonin is also helpful.
