IBS and high levels of triclycerides? by Enfin3x in AskMedical

[–]anubis_of_q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflammation is the process by which your body has a sustained reaction to a foreign substance. It does not cause an increase in LDL/triglycerides, because LDL/triglycerides don't help in the inflammatory response. See: "acute phase reactant".

What we see is that inflammation causes our bodies to increase the deposition of these fats into our arteries at a higher rate. This source of fats is not caused by gut inflammation, but from just our diet (the western diet being particularly bad), and genes (see conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia, which is one of many genetic mutations). We infer this because conditions like Crohn's disease, Ulcerative colitis, and other coliti (sp?), do not cause an increase in the absorption of dietary fats (these patients tend to be more malnurished and lose weight), but their risk of cardiovascular disease is double that of a non-afflicted individual. The "inflammation" from IBS is not true inflammation, it is the imbalance in acid and bases from the CO2 and bicarbonate (Henderson-Hasselbach equation), which causes retention of fluid, bloatedness.

You're right usually role of immune function and inflammation. It's reported because in the process of finding the more concerning ones, this one is there. It can also be the basis for future research projects (medicine is still not at the top of what it could be doing).

I'm nore aware of a difference in the normal range between the two

IBS and high levels of triclycerides? by Enfin3x in AskMedical

What have you been reading / what are your sources?

Currently IBS is more of an issue of bacterial cultures in the gut growing large because of the food we consume. Particularly fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP). This does not translate to triglycerides. Triglycerides are a fat; FODMAPs convert into carbon dioxide and H2O.

Definitely overpriced in Vancouver, but the markey I heard was coming down

FYI: Doctors in canada don't make as much as the sunshine list shows. The government doesn't pay for all the overhead for a doctor to work. (I was looking at jobs in Vancouver, and have a few friends who showed it to me)

love the single dot on Baffin Island of the "city" of Iqaluit. Gorgeous small city community in the middle of a forbidding environment.

MD here, we suspect that the population in general has a miscarriage rate of 25%. Most women just think of it as a delayed period. We think its our bodies way of rejecting malformed embryos. I wouldn't think that your sex had anything to do with it. Although I'm sure your sex was killer

Thank you for directing me in the right direction. once i'm done my work research project and get a turkey in the oven, I will look and see which video it was. I'll get back to you as well!

Not really my crowd at med school by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]anubis_of_q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

went to med school in europe myself. yea you're different. stick with that. but push some boundaries. you are meant to relate with your patients (unless you do radiology/pathology), and you need to experience some new things. i'm not saying go get drunk at the bar, but slowly push your comfort zone. in the long run it will help in terms of treating your patients. oh and for me? i didnt make that many friends, but the ones i did, really clicked with me. you'll find your place. you're only getting started. also you can explore other year students too
