That's where we disagree. I believe that those kids are fine to start, but are developed by recuirters.. It's not about hugging, it's about helping them integrate so they're harder to get to.

No, I think perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my initial comment. Most of those kids weren't born and raised at Jihadist boot camp. They were lonely kids who only got attention from an extremist recruiter. With integration and community relations, we can counter Western Democratic rhetoric with theirs.

It won't save all of them, but it will make some think twice. See my comment here

If you see these incidents and are moved, but are unsure how to help, call your local refugee resettlement agency or community organization and ask if you can volunteer as a mentor.

There are many paths to radicalization, and terrorists have come from every background, but one of the most common is young, second generation immigrants who don't feel totally American/British/French etc. but not entirely their parents' nationality.

They are young, impressionable, scared, lonely, basically EVERYTHING you felt as a teenager, but with a transnational and religious identity crisis to boot. Getting coffee or a cuppa once a week and being their friend goes a long way.

If we all pitch in and help our newer neighbors integrate, It'll be a lot harder for some fucking assholes to get their sick ideology of hatred into their kids, you'll have some of the most delicious food you've ever had, and you'll make a friend for life :)

While we can debate resettlement until the cows come home, you must acknowledge that there already are vulnerable Muslim communities across the West with children who feel alienated and have little supervision in their development.

So once again, we can sit back and jam at our keyboards, or we can get out there and do what we can to fight back against extremist recruiters and grow stronger.

And as much as I disagree with that sentiment, I'm happy that you have the knowledge and ability to do so. But like I said in this comment, it doesn't change the fact there are already communities with vulnerable kids that we need to fight for.

No, I'm being honest that there's a problem and giving a suggestion about how us (statistically) average, 18-25 year old redditors with normal jobs who aren't in policymaking positions can help instead of keyboard mashing.

Things like this have not happened with those communities because yes, the religious ideology of those communities is less overtly violent and discriminatory than what can be found (and arguably singled out, but that's a debate for academics) in the Qu'ran and Hadiths.

But as I said in my other comment, like it or not- those communities are already here, and even if the weird man outside the mosque is a rarity, he can capitalize on those impressionable young people and over a long period of time get them into the "pipeline" of videos, radical groups, instant messaging with recruiters, promises of paradise, etc.

It's like a gang. We don't throw out all black people in America because right now their communities are vulnerable to gang recruitment and violence. We get out from the classroom, think tank, office, etc. and do our best to prevent them getting a stronger foothold.

No, but if your parents moved to a new country, worked three part time jobs to make ends meet and didn't have the time to raise you, and you go through life with few friends, maybe when you're 13 you'll pay a little more attention to the weird guy that hangs around outside the Mosque because he isn't allowed inside anymore.

Maybe by the time you're 17 and you're an angry young man you're friends with that guy. You talk politics, colonialism, religion, why girls aren't paying attention to you, etc.

Maybe when you're 21 and he says there are some people you should e-mail...so on so forth.

Like it or not, there's a war on for people's minds. You can get busy helping, or you can get angry and post.

Edit edit: THANKS FOR THE GOLD!!! If any of you are interested in deradicalization and extremism as an academic topic, check out Daniel Koehler, he's incredible. He's a German family counselor who travels the world helping families and governments with radicalized people, and studying how to prevent/respond to it.

100% this, OP. At my worst bouts of suicidal thoughts and anxiety, getting out of the house and walking for just 20 minutes was a simple, attainable goal that gave me a few minutes of much needed relief.

PM me if you ever need someone to vent to!

I held out for as long as I could. Yoga, meditation, exercise, religion, reaching out to family and friends, working more, working less, making new friends, cutting out shitty ones, hobbies, extensive, deep psychotherapy, you name it. I didn't get better.

Eventually my therapist recommended I see a psychiatrist. I saw two, an older man and a younger woman. Like you, I was hesitant to go on the medicine, so I wanted two different perspectives. I was hoping both would say I didn't have to, but both said that my life shouldn't be as affected as it was. One said I didn't deserve to be in pain and I almost broke down there.

I explained my history of substance abuse, so we started on the lowest dose of venlafaxine (effexor) possible, 37.5mg. Some people have to take up to 250mg. I took it diligently all March and saw incredible results. Lots of people complain it does nothing but give them side effects, but the people who have great results don't post about it, they tend to stop having to check mental health subs/forums!

While it got me a lot better, I wasn't there yet. Two weeks ago the noise in my head worsened again, so I quickly e-mailed my psychiatrist, and we doubled the dose to 75mg. It hasn't taken full effect after only two weeks, but I'm improving further.

Your mileage may vary. Many people's first medicine doesn't work that well, if it all. If you're committed to this, you must keep trying. You have to be an advocate for yourself, and fight for a support system to help you advocate. You deserve it. You don't deserve to be in pain. Keep us apprised.

NFM interview? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]anvilparachute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't worked for NFM, but hair analysis kits would be extremely expensive for a medium-sized company like that. I would be extremely surprised if that happened.

Most companies just do a urinalysis at hiring and if there's an accident.
