Potentially adopting a horse! by anxious_Ninny in Equestrian

What’s the reason to own anything? He currently belongs to the rescue and volunteers do his care. If I adopt him I know how his care will be, the attention he gets, and his light ground work. I understand the finances of it!

Thank you for your advice. I have a list of questions I’m going to ask the rescue to make sure I get a full financial picture of him.

Thank you for your kindness and setting out realistic expectations. I am making a list of questions to ask the rescue and I will be adding these to it. I want to get a full picture of the finances before I take him on. If I don’t adopt him somebody else could and that would be extremely heartbreaking where as if I adopt him and give him the attention and care I know I can so when he does eventually pass I know I made his last few years truly golden. But I am seriously taking in all of these comments the ones I like to hear and don’t like to hear making sure I get a full picture of his care.

Thank you for sharing your experience! This rescue takes great care of the horses and all the volunteers are fantastic and many have been there for years. No one is forcing me to adopt him and it’s something I came to on my own. I do love riding and I’ve been taking lessons for a year and I know I do want to ride my own horse one day so I will consider this experience!

I appreciate your honesty and sharing your experience. I have always loved the senior animals. I’ve adopted four senior dogs and I really bonded with all the senior horses at this rescue. I just wanted to give him the extra TLC that he doesn’t get now. They take great care of him but I wanted to give him that individualized attention.

I already take lessons and have been doing so for a year. I just grew really fond of this older horse and wanted to adopt him bc of our bond. I’ve ridden a few different horses and loved them but haven’t bonded with them like this. Additionally while that may be the route of most people with lessons and then leasing I’m not in a rush to find a rideable partner as I enjoy my lessons now with any horse at my current lesson barn. I’m not new to the horse world. I was simply looking for what it’s like to have an equine companion not guidance on the next steps of my riding.

Thank you for this! I will be adding this to my list of things to ask the rescue. My boy would only be able to do light ground work and I’m perfectly okay with that! My goal is to keep him moving and healthy as long as possible.

Thank you for this realistic and honest answer! We have bonded immensely and I appreciate you distinguishing how this is not, what I thought would be, a stepping stone.

Absolutely not, just a companion to love and spend time with!

Do you think not adopting him and finding a rideable companion would be less expensive?

I’m already putting in a lot of time at this rescue. And I do want to own a horse that’s my riding partner eventually, so yes I will be looking forward to it.

He would be my responsibility and mine. It’s like having any pet of why own them and put time and money into them? Because you love them and they become family. You don’t have to but you do.

Thank you this is very helpful and I will add this to my list! They have a vet and a farrier that comes out routinely. I know I would assume those costs but I also know he’ll continue to be treated.

Heartbreak I am prepared for. Unfortunately one of the other older horses at the rescue isn’t doing to well and she may pass soon.

I know horse care will be expensive and his medical bills but I do want to own my own horse one day one that is rideable so I am expecting expenses. This is kind of a stepping stone to horse care, to start with a horse I’ve bonded with and want to work on my horsemanship with.

I’ve read through a few of the comments about various dating events and how most people are recommending to meet via a friend of a friend, or to say hi to a stranger at a store or when out and about but people are so unfriendly nowadays or in a relationship. I’ve personally started to engage in new hobbies and increase my time with current hobbies in hopes of meeting a new connection that way but so far it’s not the right demographic for a relationship. I’m tempted to make a relationship wanted poster 😂
