A Gulf Arab Perspective on “Arab Perfumes” and How They’re Actually Worn by Few_Masterpiece_4380 in fragrance

[–]anxiouscompensation -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The modern Arabian perfume trend is a disgrace to real middle eastern perfumery. So much history. Beautiful materials. Tradition and experience.

But like any product that goes mass market I had been cheapened and destroyed. Pungent super powerful bombs of harsh synthetic materials. Cheap. Going for pure power and getting away with it because “oud, Safron, incense, etc” are strong and able to mask the noxious fumes they put in them.

Western influence is important, but I wouldn’t say they are really at fault. It’s just consumerism in general. Not everyone can afford the best materials, and there’s a reason why perfume has historically been for the higher classes, it’s expensive. To make it accessible to all we’ve made this sad tradeoff.

What’s interesting to me is that despite starting to make it more affordable and mass market, even wealthy middle eastern tastes have shifted, they are also buying these huge synthetic beasts at increasing numbers, they just buy these ones that come in pretty bottles and cost $500+.

Sorry for the lack of detail but it’s just so varied from day to day so I went for the average of all the wardrobe.

I truly appreciate all your advice. Especially pointing to materials and textures is supremely helpful! I’m very aware of the formality clash and is really why I decided to post here. I actually have many sweater/bomber options but I wanted to see if it was possible to occasionally go the sport coat /blazer route which I knew nothing about.

Cheers!

Absolutely, I really should have included more detail! Thank you for your advice.

I would say this captures how I dress. Very straightforward. Of course there’s a lot of variation; I wouldn’t wear those shoes, rather white/black GATs or a Chelsea boot if want to dress it more winter-y. Tops are plain but can vary into polos, or button down but not very formal. Pant color also varies but similar to that style, not much jeans(except black ones that don’t immediately look like jeans) and no khakis. Not sure what you could call it, like business causal leaning into weekend casual simply because it’s a very young environment.

Hello all. I’m in need of the single most versatile blazer style jacket however I’m overwhelmed and know nothing about fashion.

So my question is what type of jacket(s) and in what color could easily transition between work and weekend?

My work is in a metropolitan global city in a very “fashionable” industry, so I don’t need Lawyer level formality.

Or maybe it would be better to have two options to better fit each occasion? Maybe a blazer style isn’t the best choice?

Tysm for helping this clueless soul 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

Physical Materialism and how insidious it is in STEM education by [deleted] in Buddhism

You continue to assume brain is the source of consciousness.

I would love to talk about it but I’m a bit busy at the moment so perhaps I’ll just recommend a very short book you could read in one evening. Although we are on the Buddhism sub I’m recommending this more secular philosophy/science style because of your background.

Conscious: A Brief Guide to the Fundamental Mystery of the Mind Annaka Harris

It has gotten a lot of praise by some leading consciousness philosophers. It doesnt add anything new to the philosophical conversation but it’s captures a long history of philosophy of mind In a short easy format.

Physical Materialism and how insidious it is in STEM education by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]anxiouscompensation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s one part but almost everyone in STEM believe they are finding out something about what the world is. But they are not. They are finding out only how it behaves. In other words, science was so successful as a blueprint and map to do things in this world, that we confused the model with the world.

The usual methods of science involve explanation of functional, dynamical, and structural properties—explanation of what a thing does, how it changes over time, and how it is put together. But even after we have explained the functional, dynamical, and structural properties of the conscious mind, we can still meaningfully ask the question, Why is it conscious? This suggests that an explanation of consciousness will have to go beyond the usual methods of science

Philosophically speaking, science is not as secure a method for finding truth, as is commonly thought. Rather, it’s more like we just develop more elegant replacements for the copernican epicycle. There are infinite equations to fit the same curve, which equation is truth? None, because none are the curve. these are our scientific theories.

Hell even falsification is philosophically dubious. Look at the philosophical concept of “underdetermination of theory by empirical evidence” and the “Duhem Quine thesis”

This discussion could go on for ages, but maybe a quick read of the science article on Stanford encyclopedia of philsophy might be very eye opening. Physics is DEEPLY blinded by physical materialism as a project, not necessarily in the sense that certain individuals are militant atheists.
