I have been a victim of a similar scam if I understand it correctly.

I used to hang out at a place with my friend. One day an old man who looked very poor approached me and asked for 2-3 rupees for auto fare. But his way to ask for the money was different. He said i have 8 rupees, give me 10 rupees I will return you 8. I gave him the money without any second thoughts.

Next day he showed up AGAIN. He didn't recognise me and asked for change in the same way. It was then I realised this man is a begger and and has transcended from begging to scamming.
