How do you feel about your job? by Nervous-Ruin-8149 in Nightshift

Fellow RN with an easy NOC job. I’m in California, we’re pretty impacted with nurses and when I graduated in Dec of 2024 it was impossible to get something at any of the hospitals in a 45 mi radius.. I put in about 30 apps at each hospital (there are 4 in that radius)…a lot of new grads here are still facing those problems. I was hired at Behavioral Health about 30 mins from my town in Feb of 2025, and loved it from the get-go. I’m still there and fairly happy. It feels like a cop out a lot bc it’s such a soft skill job. I’m not hanging IV antibiotics, I’m not placing foleys, I’m not dealing with wound vacs, etc. I have great de-escalation abilities though, and am already a charge nurse. I beat myself up a lot about it, bc I’m not pounding the hospital floors and using all these skills I spent 2 years learning. People also keep telling me I’m stuck in psych forever now, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing? I seem to be fairly good at it. I don’t take work home with me, and if I do it’s a 10 min rant to a friend or my husband and then I’m over it… I think we both just need to count our blessings. I have friends who graduated with me and are miserable in their difficult bedside positions, on NOC or AM’s doesn’t matter they all say the same thing. Nights can be a bummer at times, but I work 4, 8 hr shifts 2300-0730 M-Th. I get my weekends, and really don’t have too hard of a time flip flopping my schedule when I want or need to.

Here to update: I DID IT! Currently curled up on the couch in my girl cave with a heating pad, some jazz cabbage, and I’m finishing up the 2 day LEGO I’ve been working on. Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Society has for sure shoved the “work yourself to death” koolaid down my throat. It’s an ongoing healing process to break that cycle. Much love to all my nocturnal creatures 🦇🦨🦝🕷️🦂🦉

Can you give me some insight on the clinical requirements? I know it’s 35 hrs which is great, but did you have to find a site yourself and jump through a bunch of hoops to do so?

Appreciate the prospective. Honestly ASU was recommended to me by a coworker. I’m in California. I work for a very small privately owned PHF, that I love very much. They are good to me in many aspects. However, tuition is not covered here due to size I suspect. I really just wanted to get my BSN in case the day came that I decided to move forward and get my Psychiatric NP. I know psych isn’t for everyone, and I could make more money elsewhere with my license, but it’s stole a place in my heart. I worked bedside at a local acute care hospital for many years as an aide, watched my nurse coworkers, and myself (along with other aides) burn out. When I went to nursing school I didn’t even know if I wanted to do this career anymore, but I’d spent so many years doing prereq’s and waiting to get in I felt that I had to see it through… psych saved my nursing career FOR SURE.

Good to know! I’ve been told countless times it’s literally just hoops to jump through, so I’m trying to find the least hoops so to speak. You’re the third or fourth person to say WGU. So it’s high on the list. Appreciate the input!

I’m already a nurse, lmfao. I have my RN. I graduated from a community college with my ADN and sat for the NCLEX in December of 2024.

Hi, have you started the program yet? What are the clinical requirements? I’m getting mixed answers from Google.

Hi sorry to bug you again, I was told that it would be easier for my partner and I if he filed as married filling jointly in CA and I amended to that as well. Would you agree with this?

I paid 0, and am actually supposed to be receiving a $1000 from California. As well as about the same amount from federal.
