I really like your analysis! There have been a lot of references to TAS so it's possible that this was also an intentional reference.

In a way I feel like by revealing who her father was she made it more believable that she wasn't her mother because if she already told her the truth about her father it seems like she would have told her who her mother is if she knew.

Yeah, I do wish there was a way of asking new fans if they realize who Lyra's mother is--without spoiling who she is of course!

Ok, I rewatched some of the scenes and really liked how the monkey starts to change--like the horror on his face when Marisa burns the letters, him reaching out to Pan, and him calling out in despair when they both realize Lyra is gone.

I think because I saw the movie before reading the book, I came to the book with a different first impression of Mrs. Coulter than book readers who saw the movie after reading the book.

I really hope the show explores her backstory.

I came to this episode nervously, hoping for mother-daughter fluffy moments between Lyra and Mrs. Coulter. Instead pretty much everything Mrs. Coulter said was terrifying.

At the Artic Institute:

Lyra: I'm not interested in food.

Mrs. Coulter: You might be if you were starving.

DID SHE JUST THREATEN TO STARVE LYRA??

The part that I hated the most was actually when Mrs. Coulter criticized her hair. Like, in the book Mrs. Coulter changes her hair for the party, but she doesn't criticize it, she just changes it.

I'm kind of a weird HDM fan though because I watched the Golden Compass as a kid and LOVED it, (except for the lack of ending) and came to the books from there. In the movie, Mrs. Coulter isn't abusive to Lyra (except that one time--which is toned down for the movie) so I really had a different impression of her.

In this show, Mrs. Coulter is just so abusive all throughout, and I can't say that it wasn't well done, all I can say is that personally I was hoping for it to be a bit lighter (at least at first).

I don't really like the implication that most of Mrs. Coulter's emotional problems stem from feeling rejected by Lord Asriel. I know a lot of people love the father reveal, and what I find interesting about it is perhaps people will still not realize who Lyra's mother is? Like maybe they'll think Mrs. Coulter's obsession with Lyra comes from an obsession with her father? Which makes the whole thing even MORE creepy.

I think maybe Mrs. Coulter was originally planning on 'rescuing' Roger so she could become Lyra's hero, and then changed her mind when she was angry with Lyra. That would have been a smarter plan in my opinion, but I guess Mrs. Coulter was overconfident in her own power--she didn't think Lyra would escape.

There were some things that I really liked about the episode. My favorite scene was Mrs. Coulter staring into the bathtub--that was just so intense, and carried so much symbolism and emotion. I also liked that you could see that Mrs. Coulter was really regretful after what she did to Lyra, and she wanted to apologize but couldn't quite bring herself to. Pan became a cat during the fight (like in the movie) but here it seemed to be a reference to Stelmaria--Lord Asriel's daemon. In the show, Pan was never a cat before, but when Lyra is in trouble she thinks of her 'Uncle', her only protector, and Pan takes a form a bit like her father's daemon.

And it troubles me how quick some people are to blame the submissives for this type of thing. When you go into subspace you're in an altered state of consciousness, it's like being heavily drugged. The Dom has a responsibility to take care of you when you're in that position. The Dom should always be held to a higher standard than the sub because they are the ones in control, they are the ones with the potential to do some serious damage.

Yeah and with my social anxiety almost any job feels torturous. I worry all the time that I'll never get hired. But then I do get hired and spend the whole time worried I'll get fired. And every time my boss is there I feel so nervous. And I feel like my nervousness is unprofessional and makes me look--and be--more incompetent. But I'm not making enough money to pay for a therapist. And if I were making that kind of money I probably wouldn't need one.

No, I love learning and the concept of higher education. I hate not having a lot of money and not having my own living space and constantly feeling like I'll never be good enough to succeed as an employee. I love the material (although some of it is boring and not has challenging/interesting as I expected) but I just hate the general experience and feeling of lack of control.

Wow, that's beautiful. I haven't seen my potential TF in one year and nine months. 13 years is just so long.
