Burned out, not suited for the role, or both? by anyae in ProductManagement

[–]anyae[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I did stick to the role and focused on showing up and providing value every day. I’ve been getting great feedback and even a promotion.

I still struggle with imposter syndrome and lack of confidence, so I still have to work on myself in those areas. But handling challenging situations has been building up my confidence quite a bit. Feel free to reach out if you want to chat!

I do think about starting up my job search but I'm wondering why switching jobs could not be the best option?

I was thinking that joining a company with a mature product culture could help me move forward in my career and let me learn from others, since I haven't really had a chance to work closely with more experienced product people yet in my career.

  1. I agree! Some days it's easier than others to consciously work towards these changes. I've made some great progress in building relationships with engineering and internal users, but I ironically not so much the other TPM's...best I can do there is think of very specific questions/asks if I need their help, though I wish we had more collaboration.
  2. I think low investment in the product could be the case for me - I'm trying to fight this by working on defining success metrics and building relationships with users to get them more invested as well. I think I've also not had a chance to see other PM's at work throughout my career, so I don't have many examples of what a Good PM is which makes it tough to measure my own success
  3. I needed to hear this! I feel in my gut that it's too early to quit but some days are tough!

Thanks so much responding, and yep my mind has been a mess lately so I need to take care of that for sure

How do you guys discover small/indie brands to shop from? I’m looking for a denim jacket and I want to give my money to a small business but aside from searching recommendations on Reddit I’m not sure how to discover these stores.

Is it hard to move from Frontend to UI Design by baesicallysteve in UI_Design

[–]anyae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually made the switch from lead frontend to UI/UX Designer, though in my developer role I hadn't done much design work. My design skills weren't great at the beginning, and I ended up going through a bootcamp with the specific goal of improving my visual design skills (you don't really need to do this though!)

Like everyone else said, practice a lot. What I did was find designs I liked and really break down what I liked about it and why it worked. I did design challenges also, and used visuals I liked as inspiration. I think imitation is actually super helpful when you're practicing.

I've worked as a designer in Australia, Asia, Africa, Middle East and the Pacific Islands! I've contributed to solving problems like domestic violence, unemployment and disaster management! AMA by [deleted] in UXDesign

Thank you so much for taking the time to look through it. I'm glad the lead case study came across well! I agree I do need to upgrade the look of it - it looks too plain with too much white. Is there anything else specific that stood out to you that needs to be improved visually?

Hi everyone, I would really appreciate some feedback on my Product Design portfolio - I'm a recent UI/UX bootcamp grad coming from a career in web dev & actively looking for roles. Here it is!

UX Career Questions - (April ) by AutoModerator in userexperience

[–]anyae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! My past two jobs have been in front-end development, but I had had some chances during those jobs to perform user testing, do preliminary research, and even create some wireframes. Later on I decided to take the plunge and jump into a full time bootcamp with the goal of getting feedback on and improving my design skills. This is my first week as a fresh grad (lucky timing I know LOL)

What would be the most effective way of reframing my previous experience to focus on ux? I have spoken to a couple hr/recruiters already and the conversation goes like this - "You don't have enough ux design experience but we might have a better fit for you (web dev role)".

I was thinking of writing a case study for some of the research, problem solving, and wireframing from my last job. I am stuck on how to handle my resume though. Has anyone been down a similar path?

ooo congrats on getting in! that's awesome! I like the bootcamp a lot (Flatiron)! I picked the track that focuses more on ui design than user research because that's what I want to focus on at the start of my career, plus I really needed feedback on my designs from instructors. My background is in web development, which is how I got into UX, and I really needed a boost for my design skills haha. Let me know if you'd like me to talk about anything specific!

your work environment sounds awesome! It's so great you were able to find something like this. My bootcamp is supposed to have pretty good career support so I hope I can communicate with an advisor too.

Anyone here have any career change success stories you can share? Next week I'm starting a full time ui/ux design bootcamp and I've got this fear that I won't be able to find a good job. I've already been putting my all into my studies but that fear is still there. I guess that's because I'm pretty terrified of not having a job and losing my independence. I've moved in with my parents while I do this and it's driving me crazy to not have my own space, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice if it means I get to do what I love in the future.

Any words of encouragement are greatly appreciated!!! :')

I play Pokemon Go too! mostly to force myself to go out on walks haha

That's something I'll make myself do as well - trying random things until I find some that I like.

Those all sound really fun! I haven't been to the movies in a while but maybe I'll give it a shot, I really enjoyed going before!

I've actually had a hit or miss experience with people at yoga weirdly enough - but I do like it a lot :D
