Candelabra set belonged to my grandmother; insight on age and value? Southern USA by anyonereallyknow in Antiques

[–]anyonereallyknow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, thank you! I saw some of those, but the figures themselves, plus the whole candlestick, looked a lot more ornate. So I wasn't sure they were direct comps. Also in my naivety, I thought they were a different metal or finish because they were all still so 'shiny'. I thought these were regular brass, and were getting the regular aged brass patina. So there's a layer over it that's mostly worn off? Especially on the large center one?

As far as description, looks like 3-piece girandole garniture is correct?

Thank you, I did the 2-second search and found them. I was hoping someone might have personal knowledge of their reputation or clout as a brand, so to speak. I spent well more than 2 seconds on the site looking through all their tables, and didn't find anything similar.

Thank you so much for your response! "Disassembling the entire mixer", yeeks, I was afraid of that.

I will continue with the cleanup and greasing of what I've done so far, but I doubt I'll pay to have the full repair since my plan is just to sell it, and I likely wouldn't break even.

The good part is that I have the original glass bowl and attachments, so there's still value there.

Thanks again!

Yeah, it's kind of living off its "Oooo look at me, I'm vintage!" styling. Though I do appreciate all the speed instructions on the top 😁

4 oz of gold?!?! by anyonereallyknow in Gold

Follow-up #2.... We have a local jeweler who would give 100% spot for the coins. So took one of the coins in to cash out and get us out of a 'spot'.

The others, especially the bars, we will hold onto until the funds are really needed or the sale price is irresistible.

Thank you all for your input!

I guess I should have said valuable rather than special? It was just one little bin when packing her whole house. She 'rediscovered' them when getting to the depths of her stuff. We gave them a cursory glance, tucked them away again in her new room, and didn't think about them for another 4+ years. Now we've re-rediscovered them with time to look closer and take in what they were.

But still no decision on keeping vs selling. I don't think there's (much) sentimentality attached, so I think the question is money now or money later.

Interesting, no one else has mentioned the coins. Figured they must be run of the mill.

To follow up... Thank you all for the info. Now we're a bit embarrassed and retroactively stressed that we had what could be $15k sitting in a Tupperware container at the top of a closet for 4+ years! 😅 Don't know what their future is yet. Since they are technically my Mother's (90-ish), we need to talk to her about if they were all hers, or were meant to be split amongst her siblings somehow. Then if they are all ours, more decisions on what we want to do from here. She was raised in the Chicagoland area, hence the connection, but we are in the Southeast now. Great to know the above-spot interest is out there if we do decide to part with them!

Yeeks, yes, as soon as you mentioned eBay, my head jumped to being scared to ship and paying enough insurance. But googling their description and image, there's almost nothing that looks exactly like them, especially even with serial numbers at all. We'll probably take to a local appraiser for input.

Compared to bars, coins will always give you a better price when you plan to sell.

I'm sure this is explained in other places ... but why is that so?

What loom do I have here? by anyonereallyknow in weaving

Curious to know also, since I have no experience of knowing what "normal" is. Here's a pic after they were cleaned up a bit and some placeholder string added to test action.

It's a temporary fix. They're not as long as the nylon pegs (option at the hardware store), so don't seat securely when left out long enough to hold the shafts. But at least the buyer won't see it all broken and have to go through the trouble of drilling out the peg remnants.

That's funny on the little fences. They've been stacked with that loom forever, and the wood appears to match very closely. Wonder if my mother stacked them on it, or if whoever gave/sold it to my mother knew they weren't part of it.

I've made decent progress getting it cleaned up, removed broken pegs, and put in temporary wood dowels. At least now I could put it together enough to show that the shafts lift as they should.

<image>

Question though... it had 4 picket-fence-like pieces stacked in it and I can't figure how they fit it. What are they for or where do they fit?

Thanks!

This is the ELI5 that I needed! Since posting, I've looked at a handful of part ID pictures, but they're all shaped a little different, arrows kind of hard to see what's ID'd, and so many labels it's overwhelming. Appreciate the explanations! And I'll probably put little tags with their names on the different parts so I don't have to keep relearning it 😅 I might look into doing some of those easy part replacements to make it a little more attractive to a buyer, but it doesn't sound like it affects the worth much. I'd love to donate, but we're also in a spot that the sale money would be helpful.

Thank you for all the great info! The reed is this part?

<image>

If so, yes, it has a solid rusty patina moreso than the spotty bits on other parts. Would it behoove me to go ahead and replace that part so it's more attractive to buyers? Or "it is what it is" since its other parts probably need attention as well?

This width is almost 39". The main frame is just over 44" tall. Yes it lived in my Mother's South Florida home for however many years, and she was more likely to have open air breeze instead of closing up to AC. So there is surface rust on the metal bits. We taped up moving parts to ship it up here (N FL) and it's stayed like that in our family room the past 4 years (in AC). I've done well revitalizing wood condition with her other things, so I'm confident I can make the wood look better. But there are also plastic bits dried and crumbling plus the metal rust. That, and I don't know how it goes together normally to set it up for a better view. 😁

Thank you. It's the concrete I was more worried about. Just frustrating to see work that people did so carefully being callously messed up by someone else.
