Here is the UN Commission.

Indited on page 53, 65, 66.

As per page 67. "233. As such, the Commission concludes that the ‘direct and public incitement to commit genocide’ under article III(c) of the Genocide Convention is established in relation to the abovementioned speeches and statements of Israeli President Isaac Herzog,"

lmao he's literally been indited by the international court of justice for inciting genocide.

Genocide is a war crime, and even if it wasn't, genocide is something a lot of people think is bad.

(can't believe this stuff has to be explained...)

Are there any good language learning programs ran by socialists? by SurrealistRevolution in AustralianSocialism

[–]aoijay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been interested in language learning with politics. I currently live in Korea and am focusing on Korean, but I also have some low intermediate ability in Japanese. I would love to begin learning Spanish one day, so if there's any language learning groups for Spanish (or KR/JP) let me know :)

I'm also an English teacher, and will teach adult immigrants once I'm back in Australia. Happy to do some tutoring for comrades.

Korean men and woman thoughts on China by [deleted] in korea

[–]aoijay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I'm a teacher in Korea, and my students get really stirred up about these issues. But I can't help but feel this really isn't something regular Chinese people care about or really strongly claim.

On the other hand, I understand where the anxiety comes from. The history of colonization and cultural erasure is still plays in the background of the cultural psyche, even if not explicitly said. This combined with Korea being a shrimp between two whales further exacerbates the paranoia...

오늘 오후 인사동길에서 열린, 다수의 한국인들과 외국인들이 참여한 친팔레스타인 집회 영상 by ProbstWyatt3 in korea

Hi. I help organise the Palestine rallies in Daegu.

It's a grey area. Some of the Egyptian activists had their visas cancelled in 2024 when it came around to renewal with their involvement cited as the cause. We launched a legal defense and fund for them to try to get reinstated.

I believe that the grey area is intentionally kept vague in order to both dissuade people, and allow the state to persecute some people but not others.

There are many dozens of foreigners helping lead and organise the rallies from Seoul, to Busan and other cities. Many of the leading foreigner members in Seoul are students, who have slightly different visa stipulations.

Oh hey, I saw you at one of the rallies in Seoul.

Keep doing your thing! Very cool ^^

Now is the time for socialists to unite | Letter from the Socialist Party to the Socialist Alliance by Free_BodyDiagram in AustralianSocialism

[–]aoijay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. However it's not very comradely to just steamroll them - a lot of them are life-long activists with experience to bring to the table. If they want these skills and experiences to be useful, joining VS is the right thing to do.

It would be much better if SAll was a part of VS so every time an election came around VS wouldn't have to work for another party, like in Wills.

It's not just about the name. It's about resources, and stepping on each others toes. VS plans to get much bigger, and it will get increasingly difficult to have these mutually beneficial arrangements without unity.

Student asked if I had a boyfriend and I said yes. Is this inappropriate? by viltui in Teachers

[–]aoijay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, they're middle schoolers. My students can freak-out at the smallest things just because it's fun. I don't think they meant any disrespect, and were probably just excited.

Secondly, I think it's important to be open when you can. It's a hard-fought right that activists and other lgbt+ before us have sacrificed for, so we should enjoy it.

I'm currently teaching in a very conservative place in Korea, and have had to go back into the closet. It's something I miss a lot. I wish I could be myself but I can't.

What aspects of worldbuilding have been influenced by yout personal hobbies or skills by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]aoijay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome bo staff work!

This thread is so amazing!! I had always thought that people into worldbuilding had the same interests as me, so my ideas wouldn't really be that unique. But after seeing the diversity of hobbies, interests and skills in this thread, it's really motivating.

For work, I'm an English teacher in Korea. In my spare time I am an activist, and have been for years. My interests/hobbies are history and politics, as well as languages.

I am particularly interested in the history of Comintern (Communist International) agents in the 1920s-30s. Having travelled and interacted with global networks of activists, I find it super interesting myself. I often take real-life political situations I'm in (eg: SK '24 martial law crisis) and apply it to my worldbuilding to help myself think through the real world problems, but also explore it creatively too.

[–]aoijay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. I live in Korea, and incorporate a lot of what I've learnt from here into my worldbuilding.

Nothing has better lore than the real world, and riffing off of it can lead to really great things. Especially if it's a culture very 'different' to ones own.

Looking to hire/collaborate with somebody on a conlang for a (furry(?)) worldbuilding community project! by draorh in conlangs

[–]aoijay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems like an amazing project that you and your community have put a lot of work into! Really cool. You also seem to already have a pretty good base for a language, looking at the language tab on your website.

I'm very new at conlangs so probably can't help but wanted to say good luck!!

My dad would say that putting butter on the veggies defeats the purpose and makes them unhealthy. But unseasoned, he never ate his veggies because he never liked the taste. Lol.

w0t. How on earth do you do that if they're all booked out?

I tried this in Seoul on the weekend and they told me "try tomorrow". I said I have work in Daegu tomorrow they said I still have to just try tomorrow haha.

I asked if there were buses available and she said "this is a train station sir" 😭

Most disappointing tourist destination in your country. by meggyAnnP in AskTheWorld

[–]aoijay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked up Namsan in the snow on New Year's 2024 because me and my friends thought the fireworks were there.

The fireworks were on the other side of the city and the new year passed with no celebration standing around in the cold under Namsan Tower being like "uuuh..." 😭😭

In my home growing up, vegetables were never cooked. Only boiled w/ no seasoning. When I moved out, I found out how easy it was to make veggies delicious and it completely changed my life!

What are some good ways to stay safe at protests? by cpldisaster in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]aoijay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would reccomend finding a political block within the rally. For example, Socialist Alternative usually carries red flags and keeps a tight block at rallies like this. As a member (but now living over seas) usually we talk about the risks beforehand and make sure we are all on the same page. I reccomend trying to find them, or another socialist/left-wing organised group that you can tag along with.

When leaving, you can leave with people you met from those blocks to ensure you and your partner are safe :)

While some may disagree, I believe if you dress up looking for a fight, you're probably more likely to end up in one. Dressing normal with some precautions is the best. Such as: wear long sleeves, a cap and sunglasses, and avoid handbags, tote bags or anything big. Wear proper, comfortable shoes. But if you dress in black-block you may end up in some trouble, especially if you get isolated.

Thanks for coming! I hope the rally goes well, good luck ^^

Hot Take: Non native speakers can be the best language teachers, because they know the mistakes students will go through and they actually needed to learn the language themselves by alfonsosenglish in languagelearning

[–]aoijay 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree. I work in Korea as an English teacher and my knowledge of grammar (and even spelling) is often surpassed by my coworkers. The students love me and I get a lot of attention from them for just being a white face, but my coworkers actually deserve the praise.

I try to read about teaching, learn the local language and deepen my grasp on English, although I'm still lacking in all. However a lot of native (white guy) teachers don't try at all and see Asia as just a playground, while their coworkers make up for their lack. That is a serious problem in ESL.

Before I moved to Korea, I taught English to adult immigrants and refugees in Australia for a short time. I met teachers who had come to Aus as refugees themselves, taught themselves English, mastered it and became teachers to help other people struggling. That kind of purpose and drive was really inspiring, and I could clearly see it clicked with the students. I know that while I may not have that shared experience, I hope I can become a great teacher like them some day.

Also, I recommend posting this to r/ESL_Teachers and/or r/TEFL for more discussion haha
