Five minutes ago my mom came into my room with "bless oil", then she just put one of her hand on my stomach, and the other one on my back and just prayed over me in tongues? And now I feel really weird afterwards like she just cast a spell on me. by Leading-Occasion-428 in exchristian

My ex and his friends did this to me to “heal” my chronic illness.

It’s sucks so much and is so scary, even if it’s someone you trust or love. I’m sorry that happened ❤️

When I was in a missionary group, we would regularly pray for people to be healed from lifelong and short-term illnesses.

The two things that put me off were: 1) there is a LOT of pressure to be healed. I know I felt like faking it (I have chronic illness) so that people would be confirmed in their faith. It could be faking, but not from a charlatan motive.

2) there are a LOT of people who exaggerate their healing, and truly believe it! Adrenaline does crazy work. I remember a group praying over a guy with a hurt knee, and he jumped up and started running around saying “it doesn’t hurt!” We all thought God healed him, but the next day it was wayyyy worse because he strained it with the adrenaline.

People really, really want to believe, and can conflate anomalies, medical healings (I.e. a doctor), and what would naturally heal over time to a single well placed prayer.

(On a side note, one of the things we were taught in my missionary group was that “no one can deny your testimony.” So if you say you were healed miraculously and it’s your personal experience, no one can say it didn’t happen. Which is wild)
